Russian President meets SRK and Bebo on sets of Ra.One
That Shah Rukh Khan has a huge fan following world over is a given. However, what was surprising to note was the fact that even the President of Russia Dimitri Medvedev is an admirer of the Bollywood superstar. The Russian President was in Mumbai on a political visit but he did squeeze out sometime from his busy schedule to drop by on the sets of Ra.One to meet Shah Rukh Khan. Dimitri Medvedev was also equally excited to meet SRK’s Ra.One co-star Kareena Kapoor and even told her how popular her late grandfather (Shri. Raj Kapoor) still is in his homeland Russia. The President saw one shot, chatted with the actors and bid them goodbye.
In the recent past, even world famous magician Franz Harary made a stop over on the sets of Ra.One to meet the Baadshah of Bollywood. Surely they don’t call him King Khan for nothing.
Ranbir Kapoor’s loss becomes Aditya Roy Kapoor’s gain

From one Kapoor to another. Debutant Aditya Roy Kapur who has made such a positive impact in Action Replayy has Ranbir to thank for the part. Post-Saawariya Aditya’s role was first offered to Ranbir who had reservations about sharing screen space with Aishwarya and Akshay.
Veejay-turned-actor Aditya Roy Kapur who also plays a major role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish, has found unexpected support in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who stars with him in both his post-debut films.
While Aishwarya plays Aditya’s mother in Vipul Shah’s Action Replay, she stars as his confidante and sympathetic shoulder in Guzaarish, two contrasting roles with the same actress that could create a confusion of perception, though it may be recalled Jaya Bhaduri played Sanjeev Kumar’s daughter and wife in Parichay and Koshish, respectively.
Aditya is totally unfazed and far from confused about his diametrically opposed parts with Aishwarya in the two films he’s doing with her.
“Sanjay Bhansali Sir’s and Vipul Sir’s film approach and treatment to the characters are so different, my response to the scenes is decided the minute I reach the sets for the two films. So I’m not confused by differing roles with Aishwarya in the two films, says the young actor who made his debut last year in London Dreams as Zoheb, the Pakistani member of Ajay Devgan’s rock band.
“I had no burning ambition to become an actor, confesses Aditya whose eldest brother Siddharth works with UTV and second brother Kunal is a director- actor. Aditya is the baby of the family. “Considering my eldest bro is 19 years my senior, he’s almost like a father figure. So yes, I’m the baby of the family. I think Sanjay Sir and Vipul Sir saw me veejaying on television and decided to sign me. Luckily both the experiences have been rewarding.
Though Aditya has been seen around with his Guzaarish co-star Monikangana Dutta, it’s Aishwarya Rai Bachchan he likes talking about. “She has been very helpful with my scenes, telling me how to do them. She has been a silent support on the sets. I won’t forget that.
Aditya has often been seen hanging out with Monikangana. But he dismisses any talk of their friendship being anything more. “She’s my co-star in Guzaarish. And we’re of the same generation. So we spend time together. Otherwise I am single at the moment.
Is Karan directing portions of SRK’s home-production?

Is Karan Johar directing portions of RA.ONE? Ever since Shah Rukh Khan tweeted that Karan visited him on the sets of his film in U.K., the rumour mills have been working overtime. There were reports in a section of the media that Karan was directing portions of the film and had also consented to direct the songs. There was talk that SRK and Anubhav Sinha had agreed to take Karan on board as the second unit director of the film.
So what’s the truth? The truth is that Karan was present on the sets of the film, but in the capacity of a friend, as a good luck charm. Also, all talk of Karan being the second unit director is absolutely false, for the project is SRK and Anubhav Sinha’s baby entirely. They have worked very hard on it and it would be unfair to SRK and Sinha both if news like this is taken seriously. In fact, Karan was in his hotel room almost every single day, which wouldn’t be the case if he was co-directing the film.
Also, the talk about Karan ‘directing’ the songs of the film is equally baseless. Sure, Karan is a multi-faceted personality, but not a choreographer. At least not yet!
"Mika Singh: The Mauja Hi Mauja gabroo talks about his journey and his hits"
With Ibn-e-batuta (Ishqiya) and Apni to jaise taise (Housefull) under his belt, Mika Singh has added two more hits to his chartbuster cap. In a candid conversation with Screen, we get acquainted with the musical maverick
Playback singing seems to be a part-time occupation for you despite your high hit percentage. Why is that?
Our entire family back in Punjab has been into music as a full-time occupation that brooks no compromise. When I came to Mumbai it was after three years of planning and a lot of hard work. I am from a school that believes in well-trained complete musicians who compose as well as sing. It is thus necessary to learn not just formal vocal music but also as many instruments as possible – I learnt 50 instruments so that as a composer I know their strengths and zones and am aware of what orchestration I will need for any song. For me, this was a definition of a true-blue composer, whether he was into bands, pop or folk music. My ambition was a minimum one worldwide hit of my own, which I luckily got with Saawan mein lag gayi aag, later used in Woodstock Villa.
But when I came here, I realised that over here the guy who makes the tune is known as the music director! It was all so easy! You could get arrangers, musicians, programmers…! Even in playback, anyone could come in!
Which was your first playback song?
That was Dekha jo tujhe yaar from Apna Sapna Money Money under Pritamda. Let me reveal one more fact to you. Punjabi music is an entire culture with a huge fan base across the globe. There are dozens of artistes like my brother Daler Mehndi, Rabbi, Gurdas Mann and so many more who do not need Mumbai and its show business to be famous and successful. Their concerts worldwide have attendances in multiples of shows with top stars from Hindi films! But the ironic part is the public perception that unless you are a part of Mumbai and its film industry you are not supposed to have made much headway as a musician! That is why I thought that I will come down to Mumbai. For me, live shows are still what I am and film music is a periodic indulgence. Shows were my dream and remain as my main source of income.
You also composed Ganpat for Shootout At Lokhandwala.
Sanjay Gupta had recorded another song for the situation. But I told him frankly that that kind of song will not jell with hardened criminals who are singing it on screen. The expressions were all wrong. He agreed and that’s how I made the song.
Do you want to do more songs in films as composer?
Stick to what you are good at and try and become better and better is my way of looking at things! You can’t listen to flatterers telling you, Arey yaar, tum music direction bhi karo or suggesting that you can become a hero because you are handsome enough and so on! Having said that, I do give inputs on the songs I am called to sing. Most music directors also leave it to me to sing a song in my style. I am also known to give frank opinions of songs to composers!
Is that then the real reason why you sing so less in films?
I believe that if a singer is needed a music director will come to him, so I do not approach them and thus have sung in cinema for very few people like Pritamda, who has used me best, come Mouja hi mouja in Jab We Met, Baalmulaiza from De Dana Dan, Oh by god from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani or my Apna Sapna.. song. I have sung for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal Bhardwaj, Anu Malik, Anand Raaj Anand and for young composers like Bappa Lahiri and Mithoon. Pritam really makes an effort to give me something different every time. What I also like about him is that his sound quality remains uniform through all his films – he does not compromise if the film has a smaller budget. I also liked the way Mithoon experimented with my voice and made me sing the soft, romantic track Saajana in Lamhaa that was completely new for someone with my image.
How do you see musical trends going today in films and outside?
The line between film and pop music has almost vanished, which in a way is good, and in some aspects bad as well. There is nothing new in the compositions and yet there is occasional freshness, the voices are all different and yet they are strangely similar too! There is no clear demarcation in styles that we saw with R.D.Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Bappi Lahiri.
Reality shows are a boon for new talent, but there is the same problem – the contestants all want to be playback singers! None, for example, would want to make a career out of singing devotional songs.
But the worst thing about film music today is how a music director records one song in five different voices and then chooses, or someone else not connected with the music does so, and we are all at their mercy!
Finally, with Daler being so popular, did you make any special effort to modulate your voice differently?
To an extent, I did, but nature had thankfully made our voices different too.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘comic crisis’, shooting cancelled
Though Madhur Bhandarkar is shooting a comedy-his career’s first, we might add-things are far from funny in his real life at the moment.
Just when the comedy Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji began shooting this month after monsoonal delays, the director’s mother was hospitalized. Madhur had to shuttle between Hinduja hospital and his set in Andheri in the suburbs of Mumbai, and try to see the funny of side life on camera while his mother lay critically ill.
As if coping with an emotional crisis was not enough Madhur’s leading man Ajay Devgn had to leave for a promotional tour of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai on Saturday leaving Madhur’s comedy bereft of its main character.
The director’s problems don’t end there. On Thursday, one precious day of shooting had to be cancelled because the set had to be re-designed.
Sounding utterly distressed Madhur says, “Ajay had to leave for Delhi and Kolkata for his promotion. And shooting got cancelled on Thursday. So I had just one day to finish his work for this schedule. Luckily Ajay is a quick actor. He doesn’t waste time on the sets.”
Even otherwise shooting funny scenes with one’s mom in the hospital is not easy.
Says Madhur, “Luckily Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji is not a slapstick comedy. The mood on the sets is subtle. If everyone had to constantly scream shout and whoop it up, I don’t know how I’d have coped.”
The one good thing that has come out of the gloomy week of illness, cancellations and other glitches is the director’s bonding with Ajay Devgn.
Madhur can’t stop raving about his hero. “Ajay is so hassle-free and chilled out. He is effortless on the sets. I want to work immediately again with him.”

Julia Roberts Film Set In India, Security High Alert

MIRZAPUR: Young boys climbed trees and villagers crowded rooftops in a tiny dusty village in northern India Sunday to catch a glimpse of Academy Award winner Julia Roberts shooting her new film, “Eat, Pray, Love.”
Scores of policemen, armed with bamboo sticks, private guards and plainclothes security guards kept curious visitors at bay as the “Pretty Woman” star walked about the sets created at Mirzapur village, 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of the Indian capital, New Delhi. Huge black screens protected the sets from television crews and photographers.
Roberts was dressed in a turquoise blue tunic and loose pajamas, the traditional clothes worn by millions of Indian women. In the film, she plays the part of an American woman who leaves behind a troubled marriage and sets out on a journey of self-discovery.
Newspapers and television stations in India have been covering Roberts’ every move since she arrived in India accompanied by her three children nearly 10 days ago.
Security has been tight with about 50 local policemen and security officers guarding the star in the village and in the nearby small town of Pataudi, where Roberts is staying at a former palace converted into a heritage hotel.
The shooting of the film began a few days ago, and started with prayers offered by a Hindu priest.
A local newspaper quoted the priest, Swami Dharam Dev, as saying he had given the names of Hindu gods for her three children.
“I have named her twins Hazel and Phinnaeus as Laxmi and Ganesh, while Henry will be called Krishna Balram,” he was quoted as saying.
The movie, a Brad Pitt production, is directed by Ryan Murphy. It also stars Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, Richard Jenkins and Billy Crudup.
