Police make arrests after London disturbances and looting and vandalism hits shops and council premises. Groups of youths attacked shops and damaged a police car in north London as police sent in reinforcements to prevent more rioting on the scale that laid waste to another area of the British capital 24 hours earlier.

Scattered incidents broke out on Sunday evening in Enfield, a few miles north of the deprived London neighbourhood of Tottenham, which was hit by some of the worst riots seen in London for years on Saturday night after a protest over the fatal shooting of a man by armed police earlier in the week turned violent.

Three shops were damaged, and two of them looted, in Enfield and the rear window of a police car was smashed, police said, adding that several people had been arrested.

Fire engines were still on site of smouldering buildings, with bricks littering the roads and burglar alarms still ringing.

Earlier in the day in Tottenham, an area with large numbers of ethnic minorities and high unemployment, workers began cleaning up shops trashed by looters and police sealed off a main street to investigate crime scenes after rioters throwing petrol bombs set fire to police patrol cars, buildings and a double-decker bus.

Police said 26 officers had been injured as rioters bombarded them with missiles and bottles, looted buildings including banks, shops and council offices, and torched three patrol cars near Tottenham police station.

At least 42 people have already been arrested, with police anticipating further arrests.

Huge quake rocks Pakistan overnight

ISLAMABAD: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 shook southwestern Pakistan early on Wednesday, jolting residents of cities as far apart as Delhi and Dubai, but the epicentre was far from major population centres.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was more than 80 km underground, close to the town of Dalbandin in Baluchistan province, near the Afghan and Iranian frontiers.

Poor communications ensured there were no immediate reports from the vicinity of the quake, but despite the major strength of the shock, the great depth may have limited damage. The USGS had first said that the earthquake was very much shallower.

The USGS said the epicentre was 55 km (34 miles) west of Dalbandin, a town of about 15,000 people, and at a depth of 83km (52 miles).

In Dalbandin, several people were injured when the roofs of their houses collapsed.

With the Ayodhya verdict deferred to next week, rumours started flying fast and furious within the industry that ANJAANA ANJAANI has been postponed yet again. The film was pushed from 24th September to 1st October and was now rescheduled for 8th October. The news gave panic attacks to several people in the film industry, especially film producers whose films are slated to release in October. A further postponement of ANJAANA ANJAANI would only mean that the release schedule would go haywire, yet again.

However, ANJAANA ANJAANI producer Sajid Nadiadwala denied he had decided to shift the film any further. “There’s no truth to these rumours. I am not pushing the film ahead. ANJAANA ANJAANI is confirmed for 1st October and that’s final,” the enterprising producer put an end to all speculation.
