88b1e89dd1hopian Curfew like situation in Srinagar, ShopianCurfew-like situation prevailed across IHK on Monday as authorities imposed restriction on movement of people to thwart protest march “Shopian Chaloo” called by the freedom movement against the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian on May 30. As a result of the stringent restrictions coupled with the march call, life in the valley remained crippled for the 8th successive day on Monday. Residents complained that the police did not allow them to move out of their houses claiming that curfew has been imposed. Police, however, denied that curfew has been imposed. . “Curfew has not been imposed in any part of the valley but security forces have been instructed to implement prohibitory orders under section 144 of CRPC banning assembly of five or more persons at a place,” a police spokesman said. There was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the valley so far today, the spokesman added. Government offices, educational institutions, and semi-government offices besides markets remained closed on Monday. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were seen patrolling on streets of Srinagar and major towns of the valley including Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Shopian and Kulgam to maintain law and order. While all major roads in the cities have been sealed with razor wires, iron gates have been put up at other places including Sonawar on Srinagar-Shopian road to block movement. Hours before his arrest on Saturday, Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani had issued a call for “Shopian Chaloo” for today and to hold peaceful demonstrations till Friday when the future course of action would be announced. Geelani, his close aides and several other separatist leaders and activists were arrested on Saturday night while others including Chairman of moderate Hurriyat conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik continued to be under house arrest. The bodies of Asiya (17) and her sister-in-law Nelofar (22) were fished out of a stream in Shopian, 52 km from here, on May 30 after they went missing from an orchard.

Strike on in Kashmir Valley; Syed Ali Geelani Arrested

200b1921earested Strike on in Kashmir Valley; Syed Ali Geelani ArrestedSRINAGAR: Indian police arrested Sunday a Kashmiri leader for encouraging week-long protests over the alleged rape and murder of two Muslim women.

Syed Ali Geelani, 79, was held after a midnight raid on his house in Srinagar, a police source said, adding that he had been shifted to an undisclosed location to prevent him calling for further demonstrations.

Anger over the death of a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old sister-in-law has effectively shut down much of the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, over the past week.

Indian officials say preliminary investigations suggest drowning was the cause of death, but the families of the victims have accused the security forces of abducting, raping and killing the women.

In an attempt to curb the daily protests, which have so far claimed one life and left more than 300 injured, authorities have issued a ban on demonstrations.

Before his arrest, Geelani made telephone calls to local reporters calling on Muslims to hold protests on Monday to “express solidarity with the families of the victims.”

A judicial probe ordered by Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has failed to cool tempers.

An insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir has left more than 47,000 people dead over the past 20 years.

1e3d802227burnt Curfew Imposed in SrinagarSrinagar: A curfew was imposed in Srinagar on Wednesday, as protests continued for the third consecutive day over the alleged rape and killing of two women by security forces.

The protestors burnt effigies of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has ordered a judicial inquiry into the deaths.

Streets remained deserted, shops and businesses shut, as the strike called by separatists crippled activity.

Security personnel patrolled the roads, as movement was restricted in the city.

The strike called by the All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference, also closed schools, colleges and many government offices in Kashmir.

The shutdown strike left the residents harried and troubled.

Life was at a standstill as many were forced to remain indoors.

“We are facing a lot of problems. We are not allowed to go anywhere. Life has come to a standstill. There are many difficulties,” said Nisar Ahmed, a resident.

Residents alleged the two women, aged 17 and 22, were abducted, raped and killed by security forces in Shopian, 60 km from Srinagar.

Bodies of Nelofer (22) and her sister-in-law Asiya (17) were recovered from a stream last Saturday after they went missing from their orchards in Shopian town, 52 km form here, the previous evening.

The authorities denied that the women had been drowned in a stream. A police statement said the post-mortem revealed no marks of violence.

Piercing the tight security arrangements, angry residents clashed with police and paramilitary forces at nearly two dozen places here and parts of Baramulla, Bandipora and Pulwama districts, the sources said.

Though the government has ordered a judicial probe into the mysterious death of the two women, the locals were up in arms as the kin of the victims suspect involvement of security personnel in their rape and murder.

Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani yesterday rejected the inquiry, extended the day-long strike by two more days and urged people to stage massive protests against the “brutal killing” of the two women.

Chairperson of Muslim Khawateen Markaz Zamrooada Habib along with 15 activists was detained by police when they took out a protest march from Sarai Bala to Lal chowk in the heart of the city this afternoon, the sources said.
