Thailand extends emergency rule

BANGKOK: Thailand on Tuesday extended by three months a state of emergency across about one quarter of the country, including Bangkok, due to lingering fears of unrest following deadly protests.
The move comes despite warnings from human rights campaigners that the authorities” use of the sweeping emergency powers lacks transparency and suppresses freedom of expression.
The emergency decree, imposed in April after a mass opposition rally began in the capital, will be maintained for three more months in 19 provinces — out of a total of 76 — but lifted in five others, officials said.
“The cabinet endorsed the lifting of the state of emergency in five provinces,” deputy government spokesman Supachai Jaismut said. “Emergency rule will still be imposed in the rest.”
The strict laws ban public gatherings of more than five people and give security forces the right to detain suspects for 30 days without charge.
Two months of mass anti-government protests by the “Red Shirt” movement, pushing for immediate elections, sparked outbreaks of violence that left 90 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1,900 injured.
The government rejected a call from the opposition for the emergency decree to be revoked for a parliamentary by-election in Bangkok on July 25.
A Red Shirt leader detained on charges of terrorism is running in the vote as a candidate for the opposition Puea Thai Party.
Security officials on Monday proposed extending the state of emergency, warning that some weapons seized during the anti-government protests were still missing.
But a leading think-tank, International Crisis Group, voiced concern Monday that the emergency laws had empowered authorities to stifle the anti-government movement and should be lifted at once.
“While the Red Shirts have no opportunity for open and peaceful expression because of draconian laws, their legitimate frustrations are being forced underground and possibly towards illegal and violent actions,” ICG said.
Thailand should lift the law “or risk further damaging its democracy, hindering much needed reconciliation, and sowing the seeds of future deadly conflict,” the Brussels-based group said in a report.
Enraged protesters went on a rampage of arson after a deadly army crackdown ended their rally on May 19. The unrest also spread outside the capital, particularly in the Reds” stronghold in Thailand”s impoverished northeast.
The five provinces where emergency rule will be lifted are Si Sa Ket, Kalasin, Nan, Nakhon Sawan and Nakhon Pathom, scattered around north, northeast and central Thailand.

After the Lost finale was the Jimmy Kimmel Live special, Aloha to Lost, sending off the recently-concluded series into limbo. Several of the show’s stars popped by to recall their favorite moments of the show, with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse presenting three alternate endings, and Kimmel getting a chance to poke fun at that.
That’s done now, and I don’t know what to make of it either.
Honestly, though, it’s hard to squeeze in six seasons worth of fond memories into an hour-long show. So, while we get some interesting bits from some members of the cast–Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson and Emilie de Ravin were on the show, among others–it mostly seemed like an underwhelming send-off. But maybe that is the point.
With that said, here are the highlights of Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost. Trust me, I tried squeezing things out.
Matthew Fox on the show’s ending: “What’s beautiful is that there’s room for interpretation depending on their spiritual beliefs.”
Michael Emerson on talk that he and Terry O’Quinn are hoping to work together again after Lost: “We try to think that kind of double-act we can do later in life, but once in a while we have a half-clever idea that we’re pitching around in street corners.”

Josh Holloway thinks he’s a 70-year-old beer-drinking man.
The 40-year-old actor loves the thought of growing older and being able to relax because it will be the complete opposite of his current hectic life.
He said: “I love the comfort zone. In my mind, I am a 70-year-old man with a fly rod in one hand and a beer in the other. But that’s not the world of creativity. I’m not saying you can’t enjoy the comfort when you’ve found a zone. But you must always evolve.”
The ‘Lost’ actor – who recently posed for the front cover of Men’s Health magazine – has also vowed to strip off and pose without his shirt when he eventually turns 70, so he can show off his “buddha gut”.
He laughed: “I will be that guy! And I’ll be unapologetic. I’ll be happy to show my Buddha gut, because it will certainly be out. And I will have earned it.”

Nearly a year after their journey began, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox took one giant step closer to the promised land Wednesday night (May 19). The two singers, whose paths to next week’s season-nine “American Idol” finale at times felt preordained, survived Tuesday night’s 47 million votes as the sand ran out for Cool, Texas’ Casey James.
The good ol’ boy with the Guess model looks and the bluesy bar-band style was pegged early on as eye candy by judge Kara DioGuardi — who made him take his shirt off at his audition — even as the panel frequently praised his earthy sound and guitar skills.
The focus on his sex appeal to the cougar set sometimes became annoying, but James never let it distract him from attempting to deliver solid, heartfelt performances week after week while trying to not seem annoyed by the constant jibes about his looks.
James’ departure means either Bowersox, the earthy 24-year-old musician from Toledo, Ohio, or DeWyze, the bashful 24-year-old paint sales clerk from Mount Prospect, Ill., will be crowned “Idol” next Wednesday.
DeWyze told host Ryan Seacrest that he’s “never wanted to win more than I do right now,” while Bowersox thanked the judges for their continued support.
“Everything that you guys have said has been helpful,” beamed Bowersox.

The duo had long been considered to be the front-runners of the ninth season, never appearing as one of the show’s bottom vote-getters. Bowersox solidified her finale spot Tuesday with Melissa Etheridge’s “Come To My Window” and Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” while DeWyze delighted with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

BANGKOK: Two key leaders of Thailand”s Red Shirt protesters have surrendered to authorities after a deadly army assault on their fortified encampment. They have been led away by police in central Bangkok.
However, grenades exploded nearby as the leaders announced their decision. Red Shirt leaders told followers they are formally ending their sit-in to prevent more deaths.
An army assault on their heavily barricaded protest encampment in central Bangkok killed at two protesters and an Italian photographer.

Justin Bieber Tattoo Photo
Justin Bieber tattoo image released by MTV. Two of Justin Bieber tattoo pictures doing the rounds. The first is an image of the rising star set in a tattoo parlor, with his shirt pulled up. So the second picture was shot when he was in Sydney beach in Australia. It is clear that he has a tattoo on his pelvis.

If we look back at the past, is Justin Bieber not the first teen star with tattoos. There are many teen stars that made it before, but if I’m not mistaken, there are no such discussions at the time.
