Shah Rukh Khan seems to have earned the wrath of Shiv Sena yet again. In its mouthpiece Saamna, the Shiv Sena has criticised SRK for hosting a dinner party

in London for Pakistani TV channel Prime TV and that too today which marks the 2nd anniversary of the horrific 26/11 terror attacks.

It may be recalled that SRK’s comments on the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the IPL earlier this year had angered the Shiv Sainiks who had protested

against the release of the actor’s film My Name Is Khan.

Now with this act of his, SRK has once again rubbed Shiv Sena the wrong way.

Mumbai university book ban sparks free speech fears

MUMBAI: Writers, filmmakers and social commentators have expressed fears about freedom of speech in India after hardline Hindu activists forced an award-winning book to be taken off a university syllabus.

The University of Mumbai withdrew Rohinton Mistry’s novel “Such A Long Journey” from its undergraduate arts degree course because of complaints that it contained “foul and derogatory references” to the Shiv Sena party.

Members of the party’s youth wing, led by Aditya Thackeray, the 20-year-old grandson of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray burned copies of the Mumbai-born author’s novel, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1991.

The tactics are nothing new for the Shiv Sena, which pushed through the change in name of the city of Bombay to Mumbai in 1995, but the strength of the condemnation of those involved is unusual.

NEW DELHI, Feb 10 (Bernama) — Mumbai police have cracked down on hundreds of right-wing Shiv Sena activists to avert any outbreak of violence ahead of the release soon of Shah Rukh Khan’s new movie.
Police are on high alert in India’s financial capital and home to the Hindi movie heartthrob, whose movie “My Name is Khan” is to hit the silver screens on Friday.
“It is a loss to the industry. Anything personal should not be dragged into the (movie) business.
“Our philosophy has always been no politics and casteism (caste) in the movie industry,” Sushma Shiromani, vice-president of the Mumbai-based Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association told Bernama in a telephone interview.
The vocal and charismatic actor was embroiled in a controversy with the Shiv Sena, a Marathi nationalist front led by Bal Thackeray, over Khan’s remarks to allow Pakistani cricket players play in the Indian Premier League.
Despite street protests stirred by the group over the last few days in Mumbai, the 44-year-old Bollywood superstar did not buckle under pressure nor apologise for his remarks, which further angered the Shiv Sena leaders.
On Wednesday, the right-wing political party activists started targeting his new movie by vandalising many movie cinemas in the city.
Indian television channels showed about 1,000 activists belonging to the movement had been arrested while many cineplexes in the city refused to take any advance bookings for the movie.

Mumbai police’s joint commissioner for law and order, Himanshu Roy, said officers could be deployed to the 63 theatres in the city showing the film, while checks will be made on cinema-goers.

“We will provide the security as long as it is required,” he told a news conference in the city after meeting multiplex owners concerned about possible attacks by activists from the Shiv Sena organisation.

“There will be a high level of frisking and personal checking before they are allowed to enter into theatres,” he added, but refused to go into exact details about the security arrangements.

“My Name Is Khan” — about a man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in San Francisco who falls in love with a Hindu woman against the backdrop of the fallout from the September 11, 2001 attacks, hits screens on Friday.

The release has been overshadowed by the Shiv Sena’s objections to Khan’s comments regretting the absence of any Pakistan players in the forthcoming Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament, which begins next month.

Khan’s parents were born in what is now Pakistan and he part-owns IPL outfit the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Shiv Sena has been a self-styled promoter of “Maharashtrian pride” for nearly four decades, championing the rights of people from the western Indian state over “outsiders” and the local language Ma

New Delhi: BJP Leaders Watch SRK My Name Is Khan, While the Shiv Sena and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) threaten to disrupt the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s film My Name Is Khan, some BJP members watched it at a special screening in New Delhi on Friday evening.

Shah Rukh Khan has been the Shiv Sena’s latest target with Sainiks tearing down posters of his latest film My Name Is Khan and asking Mumbaikars to boycott the film because the actor spoke out for inclusion of Pakistani cricket players in the IPL.

But members of its principal ally, the BJP, and other political parties enjoyed Khan’s latest offering at a special screening organised in the Capital.

“Politics and films should be kept separate. It’s an unnecessary controversy. There is no need for all this,” said former cricketer and BJP leader Chetan Chauhan.

With the RSS also speaking out against the Shiv Sena’s Marathi manoos policy, the BJP has towed the line and is now keen to project a more secular image.

In an interview to Karan Thapar on Devil’s Advocate two weeks back BJP President Nitin Gadkari had said that development and religion was his party’s appeal.

Entertainers can be politicians and Bollywood too has its set of politics.

But cinema is supposed to be about fun that everyone can enjoy.

Perhaps it is high time politicians stop and let the aam aadmi decide whether a movie is worth watching or not.
