Tempers cool in Kashmir after summer of violence

SRINAGAR: As the first snows fall in the mountains of Indian Kashmir, tempers are also cooling after a summer of violence that saw more than 100 people die in street protests.

For more than three months, thousands of protesters, many of them teenagers, fought pitched battles with security forces in the highly militarised disputed territory, with scores killed during police shooting.

The deaths, which reached 18 in a 24-hour period in September on the worst day of violence, caused the biggest Kashmir crisis for the Indian government since the start of an insurgency against Indian rule in 1989.

But for two weeks, the region has been mostly calm, attributed partly to a series of measures by the government designed to strangle the protests and defuse anger in the Himalayan region.

For the time being, the cycle of violence has been broken — good news for

US soldiers can be demoralized by WikiLeaks docs: Morrell

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell says US did not ignore detainee abuse, following the release of classified military documents. The Pentagon decried the website’s publication of the secret reports, the largest security breach of its kind in US military history, far surpassing the group’s dump of more than 70,000 Afghan war files in July.
US officials said the leak endangered U.S. troops and threatened to put some 300 Iraqi collaborators at risk by exposing their identities. The bottom line is, our forces are still very much in danger here as a result of this exposure, given the fact that our tactics, techniques and procedures are exposed in these documents. And our enemies are undoubtedly going to try to use them against us, and making their jobs even more difficult and dangerous, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said. Working with Iraq Body Count, a group run by academics and peace activists that estimates Iraq casualties, WikiLeaks had calculated that the documents revealed about 15,000 previously unknown civilian deaths. Morrell spoke about casualties and the allegations made about US forces. WikiLeaks said it had edited out sensitive information and was confident the documents contained no detail that could lead to anyone being harmed. The Iraq war files, spanning 2003 to 2009, touched on other themes, including well-known US concerns about Iranian training and support for some Iraqi militias. More than 4,400 US soldiers have been killed since the start of the 2003 US-led invasion. All US forces are set to withdraw from Iraq by the end of next year.

KABUL: Four troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed in an insurgent attack in western Afghanistan on Saturday, ISAF said, the latest foreign casualties in a war now in its 10th year.

Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since the Taliban were overthrown by U.S.-backed forces in late 2001. More than 2,000 foreign troops have died since the start of the war, more than half of those in the last two years.

The rising violence in Afghanistan will weigh heavily on President Barack Obama when his administration faces mid-term Congressional elections next month amid sagging public support for the war and ahead of a strategy review in December.

ISAF gave no further details regarding the nationality of the troops or the location of the attack. Troops from the United States, Spain and Italy are stationed in the west of the

Angelina Jolie calls for more Pakistan flood aid

ISLAMABAD: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie urged people on Wednesday to put aside corruption fears and donate cash to help Pakistan’s 21 million flood victims, as she ended a tour of areas devastated by deluges.

Pakistan’s government has been heavily criticised at home and abroad over perceived corruption, which many attribute to the slow pace of donations to the UN’s flood appeal, which has raised two thirds of its 460 million dollar goal.

“I don’t want some people to use it (corruption) as an excuse not to give assistance,” Jolie told reporters at the UN refugee agency’s Islamabad office.

“I have seen what they have done in the field. I’ve physically seen people assisted, so if you are nervous about giving money directly in one way there are other ways to do it,” she said.

There have been allegations that aid funds have been mishandled since the start

Three people who presumably had been kidnapped by the gang were freed following the fighting. Two soldiers were wounded.

Troops seized 23 vehicles, including two painted in army colors, two dozen guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The clash was originally reported to have taken place in the state of Nuevo Leon, where business hub Monterrey is located, but actually took place across the border in neighboring Tamaulipas.
