Firing on mourners in Libya; 15 dead

70bdb8f2011 78674 l Firing on mourners in Libya; 15 deadTRIPOLI: Snipers from Libya”s government forces fired on mourners attending a funeral for slain protesters Saturday, killing at least 15 people as demonstrations calling for the ouster of President Moammar Gadhafi continued for the fifth straight day.

Snipers targeted the thousands of people who were attending a mass funeral in Benghazi, Libya”s second-largest city and the site of violent protests. The mourners had gathered to honour the 35 protesters who were shot by government forces on Friday.

Dozens of mourners were also injured, with many of the victims suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

“Many of the dead and the injured are relatives of doctors here,” an official at the local hospital told The Associated Press. “They are crying and I keep telling them to please stand up and help us.”

Saturday”s killings pushed the overall death toll to 99 as Gadhafi”s forces crack down hard on protesters calling for an end to his more than 40 years of autocratic rule.

“The blood of our martyrs is still leaking from coffins over the shoulders of the mourners,” one protester told The Associated Press, as she stood beside about 20 coffins in Benghazi.

After Friday”s violence, the government moved to stifle online communication, a key public relations component for organizers of the demonstrations. U.S.-based Arbor Networks said Internet use in Libya ground to a halt shortly after 2 a.m. local time Saturday, with protesters confirming they were unable to get online.

A few hours later, government special forces broke up a camp of protesters, which included lawyers and judges, outside of the Benghazi courthouse. One protester told the Associated Press that soldiers dispersed the crowd by firing tear gas on the group.

After the violence at the funeral, local residents organized neighbourhood patrols through Benghazi as police disappeared from the streets. Residents feared the lack of police presence meant that government forces were preparing to raid homes, particularly of protest organizers, overnight.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called reports of guns and other weapons being used against demonstrators in Libya “clearly unacceptable and horrifying.” He also criticized limits on media access.

Malcolm Smart of Amnesty International said Saturday that during anti-government demonstrations across much of the Arab world, protesters have remained resolute even when they have been shot at by pro-government forces.

“I think that”s in a sense the inspiration that”s going to the protesters, and also in the minds of those in power and who do not want to go the way of those who were in power in Tunis and in Cairo,” Smart told CTV News Channel, referring to former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and former Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who were both forced from power by popular uprisings.

Canada”s Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said the federal government is monitoring events in Libya very closely and is “deeply concerned” about the attacks on peaceful protesters.

“We call on the Libyan government to respect the rights of freedom of expression and assembly and to engage in peaceful dialogue with its people to address legitimate concerns,” Cannon said in a statement.

In Libya, as in Egypt and other nations, protesters want solutions to dire poverty and high unemployment, as well as greater respect for human rights, including the right to peaceful protest.

The demonstrations have largely occurred in the particularly impoverished cities in the nation”s east, although protesters have taken to the streets in the capital of Tripoli.

However, the police and military presence have remained heavy in Tripoli, where one female protester described residents as being “under siege.”

‘White Collar’s’ Tiffani Thiessen: Baby-Centric and Loving It

586a63adsen 600x300 ‘White Collar’s’ Tiffani Thiessen: Baby Centric and Loving It

While the “White Collar” team is busy creating episodes of their sophisticated crime dramedy, off-camera their set is becoming something of a romper room. At least, that’s the feeling one gets listening to Tiffani Thiessen, whose six-month-old daughter, Harper, is the latest addition to the tiny visitor contingent.

“There are a lot of people on our show who have kids. She’s definitely the newest one. I think they love having her energy around the set. It’s fun. I think we’re going to have a little playroom/nursery when we go back into production,” says the actress, who plays the smart wife of an FBI man (Tim DeKay) on the popular series that also stars Matt Bomer as a reformed, debonair thief. They’ll resume work in March for the show’s third season. “White Collar” returns to the USA Network schedule with part two of Season 2 on Jan. 18.

It wasn’t easy going back to work six-and-a-half weeks after giving birth, Thiessen admits. “I missed everyone, but I was not real excited about going back. It was definitely challenging. You’re kind of like a walking zombie, tired all the time. I’m nursing, so my mom would come to the set and take care of her while I was working. The show has been amazing. They gave me time whenever I had to nurse her. I’m really blessed to have had so much understanding and a lot of great help. I have to give credit where it’s due — I couldn’t have done it without help from my mom and my husband (actor Brady Smith).”

Right now, Thiessen’s attention is on Harper’s first Christmas and “all the things you’ve got to do — the cheesy photos with Santa, the Christmas tree,” she notes happily. The Smiths will spend “half our Christmas in California with my family, and half in Texas with his,” she adds.

There’s also Thiessen’s new entrepreneurial sideline: Petit Nest, the baby furnishings line, including, she says, “cribs, dressers, chairs, gliders, decorative art and things like bedding and linens.”

“When I was designing my own nursery … I realized there was not a lot out there that appealed to (my) tastes,” she says.

All of which might lead one to think the one-time “Saved by the Bell” and “Beverly Hills, 90210″ cutie has a baby-centric mindset these days. And that’s just fine with her. “She’s the light of my life,” she says of Harper. “I fall in love with her more every day.”

FAMILY TRADITIONS: Speaking of families and holidays, Andy Garcia reports it will be a big family gathering this Christmas for him and his kin. “We take our holidays very seriously. We have 30 people over for Thanksgiving every year, and celebrate Christmas with our extended family members. We have four kids,” reminds the actor, whose grown daughters, Dominik and Daniella, have already followed him into the acting realm.

Indeed, acting is quite the family affair in the Garcia clan. Speaking of 19-year-old college student Alessandra and 8-year-old son Andres, he notes, “In school, they always take story theater and that kind of thing. They’re exposed to the theater. I think that being comfortable performing in front of people is very good for their self-esteem. My oldest daughters did that from a very early age. Now they’re obviously colleagues. We’ve done two movies together,” he says, referring to his “City Island” and “The Lost City.”

He adds, “As a proud father, it’s always good to look across the dining room table and see your child there is happy and being fulfilled.”

Apple announced the iPhone 4 today and introduced ten new features such as a slimmer body, HD video recording, and improved battery life. However, the iPhone is known for exploding smartphone gaming with hundreds of games from independent and big name developers to the point that Nintendo sees Apple as its main threat now. So, what did Apple add to the iPhone 4 for gaming? How about a 3-axis gyroscope to improve motion controls.

The new 3-axis gyroscope in combination with the existing accelerometer giives the iPhone six-axis mtion sensing (up/down, side to side, forward/backward, pitch/roll). Developers will be able to use the new gyroscope with the CoreMotion API to create games and applications for the smart phone. bc9fc5b17cgblack gyroscope
According to the information we received today, the phone will be released on June 24th in the U.S. other countries have not been mentioned so far.

The phone will have an enhanced image quality thanks to the Retinal display technology so the screen now displays 326 pixels per inch.
This announcement got a few hearty cheers apparently from the audience at WWDC, and as many iPhone app developers concentrate on the lucrative gaming segment, this isn’t too surprising. Some gaming applications that we can think of right off the bat include flight simulators, better augmented reality apps that take into account elevation/pitch changes, sport games (image iPhone 4 + Wii) and as Jobs demoed, games such as Jenga:

The game that immediately sticks out to me that would benefit the most from this extra degree of control would be a game like Zen Bound [$2.99 / Free], as I imagine manipulating the objects you wrap could be even easier with yet another degree of control. It’s not hard to think of other games that could be enhanced by the extremely precise motion tracking, especially if you’ve ever used a Wii Motion Plus and have seen just how much the addition of a gyroscope can improve how accurately a game can track your movement.

Like anything on the App Store, it’s up to developers to implement these new features. All we can do is wait and see what they come up with once they finally get the device in their hands.

Tottenham stunned Chelsea to blow the Premier League title race wide open with a second derby win in four days.

Manchester United’s earlier victory at rivals City had pulled them to within a point of leaders Chelsea – but the Blues succumbed to an inspired Spurs.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring from the spot after John Terry’s handball and Gareth Bale slammed in a second.

Terry saw red for two bookings before Frank Lampard’s late reply, but Spurs held on to move above City into fourth.

It means with three games to go, including a tricky trip to Liverpool on 2 May, Chelsea remain top of the table but with United breathing closely down their neck and with Arsenal six points behind but with a game in hand.
Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti will also be without captain Terry for one of those games through suspension following a red card few can argue with after two poor tackles.

As for Tottenham, they now have a two-point cushion over fifth-place Manchester City following a couple of wins that not only give their push for a Champions League spot a huge fillip but also delighted a buzzing White Hart Lane crowd.

Manchester United, chasing an historic fourth successive Premier League crown, got the favour from Spurs they had hoped for, having beaten City in the lunchtime kick-off before Harry Redknapp’s men took three points from Chelsea.

Roberto Mancini, anxiously patrolling his technical area, looked shattered by Scholes’ late goal while Fabio Capello, watching from the smart seats, must have rued again the midfielder’s retirement from England duty.

For those who have long-admired Scholes, a footballer who has overcome so many opponents, including asthma, it was little surprise to find him still going strong in the 93rd minute halfway through his fourth decade.
Scholes’ sustained prominence is partly rooted in his decision to concentrate exclusively on Manchester United, giving him breathers during the international breaks and summers off.

On assuming the England job, Capello noted that English players can be profligate in possession but that Scholes cherished the ball as a friend. At a time when the nation laments a shortage of technical players, contrasting with the excellence of Barcelona midfielders like Xavi and Andres Iniesta, the sight of Scholes in self-imposed exile must eat away at Capello. England have Lampard and Gerrard, but Capello would surely find a place for Scholes.

The beauty of Scholes is that he plays football as if it were chess, always working a few moves ahead. He has a picture in his mind of where everybody is, so that he can instantly find them. He plays on the half-turn, making it easy to move away from markers. Any child wanting to learn the game should start with a DVD of Paul Scholes.

Samsung Monte Review, Latest Update:Sometimes when a new handset is released, it is instantly clear where it fits into that particular 223e84acc8review Samsung Monte Reviewmanufacturer’s line-up of existing handsets, but every once in a while a new product is announced that, whilst being a fine device in its own right, seems to be nothing more than a filler handset, just another variation on an existing phone. The Samsung S5620 Monte is a device that fits into this category. I mean, it is indeed a fine handset, with an impressive array of features, but I do wonder just who it will appeal to, what is the market segment it is aimed at? Perhaps, though, the S5620 isn’t designed to attract a specific type of user, and will instead offer a broad appeal across the market. It will be interesting to see just where this phone sits when it is released.

As I said, the feature setup on the handset is very good, with a solid if not spectacular line-up. Very lightweight, at just 92g, the Samsung Monte measures in at a comfortable 109 x 54 x 12.5mm, very much among the norm for a mid range device. With a full touch enabled display, using capacitive technology, the Monte delivers a TFT screen measuring in at a good 3.0 inches, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a pixel resolution of 240 x 400. The handset runs on the proprietary Samsung TouchWiz user interface, which is a simple, icon driven menu system that makes navigation simple for even the newest of mobile phone users. The device has a built in accelerometer for auto display rotation, and there is a turn to mute option included too, which handily allows you to mute incoming calls by simply flipping the phone over. Another nice inclusion is the Smart Unlock option, which allows you to unlock the phone and instantly launch a chosen application by simply ‘drawing’ a pre selected shape on your phone’s display. So for example, drawing an ‘M’ could launch the music player, or an ‘S’ could launch the SMS feature, and so on.
