The death of the paid text message

The smartphone boom is a mixed blessing for wireless companies. While the devices have boosted data plan sales considerably, they are threatening to kill another revenue stream dead in its tracks: text messaging.

Dozens of smartphone applications offer “free” text messaging services, which allow wireless customers to send and receive texts by piggybacking on their existing data plans. That means people who download those apps — such as GroupMe, Google Voice, Disco, Beluga, Kik and WhatsApp — are able to bypass the expensive texting plans offered by wireless companies.

What s more, an increasing number of free text messaging services are being baked into the smartphones themselves. Research in Motion (RIMM) offers BlackBerry Messenger, which allows BlackBerry users to text one another over their data plans. Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) plans to introduce its similar iMessage app in the fall for the iPhone.

And Verizon Wireless embeds Skype onto every one of its smartphones. Skype bought GroupMe on Sunday, in a deal valued at around $80 million, according to several reports. Since Microsoft s (MSFT, Fortune 500) deal to buy Skype will likely close in the coming months, GroupMe could soon appear on every Windows Phone device.

599b3bc950on 111 evoHTC EVO 4G phone from Sprint
Sprint’s new HTC Evo 4G, its third device to run Google’s Android operating system, raises that theoretically absurd question.

The Evo — debuting June 4 for $299.99, before a $100 mail-in rebate, for new or renewing subscribers — stands apart from other smartphones even when it’s shut off. Its comparatively enormous display, 4.3 inches across, makes it a slab of a device, wider than any mobile phone I can remember using.

That sizable screen eases typing on its on-screen keyboard and reading Web pages, although without the trackball or touch-pad control found on most Android phones navigating and selecting text is more difficult. A thoughtful flip-out stand also lets you rest the phone on its side for tray-table movie viewing.

But in return, it looks as if it could double as a carrying case for more compact models, such as Verizon’s HTC Droid Incredible.

The Evo also aims to up the ante with its mobile broadband connection. It’s Sprint’s first phone to support its under-construction “4G” service, which the Overland Park, Kan.-based company touts as offering download speeds averaging from 3 billion to 6 billion bits per second (Mbps), compared with 3G downloads that typically go no faster than 1.4 Mbps. 5e857249ccrsonic evo
Couple this fee with the 4G and hotspot fee and the EVO was becoming quite an expensive device to own. The good thing is this fee wasn’t mandatory, it just unlocked access to those unnamed premium features.
Androidguys uncovered these features, now we all know what they are. As mentioned in an earlier post, video calls will be free. Even after you factor in the cost of this and 4G coverage, your plan would still be cheaper than those found on a few other carriers. For all you lucky people that got your hands on an EVO, you will have access to all these features for free until July 15th. If ownership of this awesome device wasn’t enough, Qik has just sweetened the pot (temporarily). The trade show industry as a whole has a history of being extremely wasteful (ever see a trade show floor at dismantle on what’s left behind to be thrown out?…you’d be surprised how many railroad cars leave a convention center with trash). Exhibit manufactures, service providers, show venues and exhibitors have increased their sustainable practices with some being pioneers, and others being forced to commit to sustainable practices. Adapting the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle model is starting to have a noticeable and positive effect on the show floor.

If your company is looking for a new trade show exhibit, or renting a trade show display, consider looking for a green exhibit. More and more exhibit houses are offering sustainable green exhibits, and some offer green trade show rentals for those that exhibit only 1-3 times per year, or would like to ”test drive” the booth prior to purchasing.

Choosing the right green exhibit will pay dividends for years to come as show standards and mandatory guidelines will become increasingly strict moving forward. Look for overall value with durable components, flexibility with graphics and accessories, scalability with different sizes, and unique cutting edge clean designs to make your company stand out on the show floor.Evo Exhibits is a full-service trade show exhibit company. Evo Exhibits product line-up includes pop-up exhibits, inline exhibits, island exhibits, custom exhibits, table top exhibits, banner stands and more.

The new Pearl 3G models measure less than two inches long and weigh 3.3 grams each. They pack many of the same features found in other RIM’s 9000-series BlackBerry devices. Both have a high decision 360 x 400 pixels and a 624 Mhz processor with 256 MB Flash memory.

Amazingly, all this packed into a 108 x 50 x 13.3mm form factor – but a bit chunky – is only two thirds the size of the 9700th It weighs only 93g. Does this spoil the battery? No, it is the same 1150mAh capability or otherwise accommodated for about 5.5 hours of talk time. So what is it?

I snagged about 30 minutes with Pearl 3G card, its fine. The build excellence is exceptional, and is as good as 9700 with nice styling fundamentals that do see it properly as his ambitious younger brother. The screen is great. It’s not OLED, but the colors are so bright and glowing it’s not pale reproduction and serves as one might expect, is as sharp as your BlackBerry safe to use. On the negative side will not happen BlackBerry OS 6 to launch, but it could be predictable.

The specification contains may well not be as affordable as 8250 Curve, but it can not be too luxurious or lack of a QWERTY keyboard will be lost at power users who typically control the upper part of the smartphone end of the scale price. Get it right and RIM can transform entry hopefuls smart phone owners get it wrong and it has fashioned a beautiful freak that will please everyone.

b23c61ac3fleaked Sony Ericsson’s New Android Phone leakedAs Sony Ericsson keeps mum about their development on a Google Android-based phone, a Danish website leaked information about its upcoming Android phone. Named as “Rachael”, Sony Ericsson scheduled its announcement later of this year according to Danish’s Mobil magazine. They also said that this particular phone model will be included in SE’s XPERIA series. So far, XPERIA series was included in the Windows Mobile X1 model.
The leaked pictures show how sleek it looks and some of its specifications give a very good fight to other smartphones on the market today. For instance having an 8.1-megapixel camera has greater edge to other smartphones which is limited to 3-megapixel cameras. When it comes to its fellow Android phones, it also reigns supreme as both the HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy has only 5-megapixel camera.
