Snow causes chaos in UK, Poland, Austria

LONDON: Heavy snow continued to cause disruption across Europe, including the United Kingdom and Poland, causing traffic chaos and flight delays.
In Austria, the animal kingdom was also getting used to the early snow.
The penguins and wolves at Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo were in their element as the cold snap closed in.
But the African elephants were not so used to a cold climate, and although they appeared to enjoy the snow, they cannot stay out all day or they will get too cold, according to elephant keeper Mathias Otto.
For one young African elephant, it was a real novelty.
It was the first snow of his life for four month old Tuluba, and he slipped slightly while following his mother along a frozen, snowy path.
Tuluba spends three hours a day outside the warm and cosy elephants’ house, which even has heated walls.

Oh Eun-Sun crawled up the final snow slopes and reached the summit of 26.247-foot Annapurna, completing her quest to become the first woman to ascend all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. She becomes the 20th person to climb all of the world’s highest mountains, a feat first accomplished by Reinhold Messner.
It took 13 hours for Oh and her entourage, including a group from Korean television station KBS who broadcast the event live in Korea, to climb from a high camp to the summit of the world’s tenth highest mountain. On reaching Annapurna’s summit, she planted the South Korean flag in snow, then turned and bowed toward a TV cameraman and shouted, “Mansae!” or “Hurrah!” Oh wept and said to the camera, “I am happy and thank you.” She also said, “Mama, papa, I miss you. I want to go home.”
Oh Eun-Sun’s ascent of all the 8,000ers is currently in dispute, as I reported in earlier blog posts. It’s unclear if her ascent of
Kangchenjunga will be recognized and verified. In the meantime, despite all the controversy surrounding not only Kangchenjunga but also the climbing tactics used by her Korean climbing team, Oh can have her place in the sun–atop the lonely windswept summit of Annapurna.

Is Korean Oh Eun-sun first woman to climb 14 top peaks? There is no one “official” record of who has, or has not, climbed the 14 peaks over 8,000m high.
The nearest thing, for the nine mountains in the Nepali Himalayas, is the record kept by Elizabeth Hawley, an 86-year-old American based in Kathmandu.

Records kept by governments are not regarded as authoritative.
Last week Ms Hawley amended her Himalayan Database to mark Oh Eun-sun’s 2009 ascent of Kangchenjunga as “disputed”, after listening to arguments from Ms Oh’s Spanish rival, Edurne Pasaban.
Ms Hawley will interview Ms Oh and her Sherpas on their return from Annapurna.
If she decides to classify Ms Oh’s ascent of Kangchenjunga as “unrecognised”, her competitors – Edurne Pasaban, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner of Austria, and Nives Meroi of Italy – will be back in contention.
These are some of the issues at the heart of the dispute over Kangchenjunga:
The summit photographs – Ms Oh ascended Kangchenjunga with at least three Sherpas, in very bad weather. A video shot at the summit in driving snow is said to be so blurry that it could have been taken anywhere. A still photograph (above) was taken at the summit, Ms Oh’s sponsors say, but not on the “three or four square feet” right at the top. Ms Hawley says the photograph is “clearly” not taken at the summit, because “summit pictures of other people on the same mountain in the same season show them standing in the snow”. However, pictures taken by climbers in previous years have shown rocks close to the summit. Another Korean climber who is on Kangchenjunga this year is hoping to identify the spot where the photograph was taken.
The Sherpas – One of the Sherpas who accompanied Ms Oh on the ascent of Kangchenjunga assured journalists at a press conference in Korea in 2009 that Ms Oh had reached the top. He told Ms Hawley’s assistant the same thing. However, Edurne Pasaban says Ms Oh’s other Sherpas have told her this is not correct. Ms Hawley would like to talk to them to determine the truth.
The rope – The summit photograph shows a green rope stretching over Ms Oh’s left boot. Spanish climber Ferran Latorre, who climbed to the summit of Kangchenjunga with Ms Pasaban 12 days after Ms Oh, has suggested that this is a rope fixed to the mountain by her Sherpas. He says this fixed rope went no higher than 8,350m, and concludes that the photograph was taken some 200m or so below the 8,586m summit. Jin Park of Blackyak, the Korean company that sponsors Ms Oh, says the rope in the picture is a 5mm rope used for attaching accessories – in this case, probably, an ice axe – rather than climbing.
Vipul Shah and Mani Ratnam to avoid clash of their films featuring Aishwarya

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has three very different releases coming up this year. And the most speculated question in the industry right now is, which performance would Aishwarya get all the popular awards for, the one in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan or Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish?
Those who have seen rushes of the two films say she has given her career’s best performance in both. Then she has Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy where she has attempted a full-on comic role for the first time.
“Of course comedy which is the hardest genre to do is not taken seriously at the awards. But in my film Aishwarya has done comedy for the first time. She may have attempted it here and there earlier. But this is her first full-fledged comedy role. But she’s welcome to get the awards for her other two releases, I don’t mind,” says Vipul Shah wryly.
While Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish will release in November, the two Aishwarya projects Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy are due in quick succession within a month.
While Mani’s Raavan is due for release June 18, Vipul was all set to release Action Replayy a month later in July, arguing that the two films are completely different in mood theme and treatment.
But now it seems better sense has prevailed, thanks to the bitter experience that Vipul went through last year when his Salman starrer London Dreams was released a month after Salman’s home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna. Then too Vipul had argued that two films with the same actor do not overlap when the films belong to the same genre.
Now apparently Vipul has seen sense. He plans to sit down with Mani Ratnam and figure out a release strategy whereby neither film suffers.
Says Vipul, “Raavan and Action Replayy are very different films. And I thought I’d come in July. But I think I’ll now discuss it with Aishwarya and Mani Ratnam. We need to work as one big family in this industry. Besides I still have a song to shoot whereas Raavan is complete. I’ve yet to figure out when I can shoot it because both Aishwarya and Akshay are constantly travelling. We were supposed to shoot it earlier this year in the snow in Manali. Now we may go higher up at the Rohtang Pass, or change the location for the song completely.”
In the meanwhile those fearing competition from Guzaarish can breathe easy. Contrary to rumours Sanjay Leela Bhansali won’t be releasing in Diwali. After Saawariya which was released during Diwali, he no longer considers the festive season auspicious for his films.

Today is the first day of spring 2010, which is marked by the occurrence of the Vernal equinox 2010. Sources report that spring 2010 officially takes place at 1:32 PM EST today.
The first day of spring 2010 is much awaited after the long and cold winter season. The past winter has witnessed some huge blizzards and snow storms, and it is very refreshing to see the snow melt away and see the trees bloom.
The Vernal equinox is a natural phenomenon that takes place twice a year – once in March and the other in September – which signals the beginning of Spring and Autumn respectively.
According to Wikipedia : “The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long.”
This Vernal Equinox 2010 will see an equal day and equal night, and not forgetting the advent of Spring 2010.
