They were briefly blocked by riot police vans and security officers close to the prime minister s office, but the vans then parted and let them continue their protest. At one stage an elderly protester fainted, collapsing on the ground and having to be helped by fellow protesters. “Disgrace” and “Shame to those who govern us” shouted the several hundred senior citizens, many saying they were living off pensions as low as 400 euros, making living conditions difficult. They were also protesting planned cost cuts to the country s health care system, to be initiated following the passing of a health care reform bill on Wednesday. pbgc.govAnother site designed to help Americans recover unclaimed money is in the news today. Public Benefit Guaranty Corporation (pbgc.gov) protects and guarantees most pension plans in the United States, including many of those that have gone bankrupt or closed.

If you’ve had a long work history with several different employers, like many Americans, you may have accrued pension benefits along the way. Unless you’ve been diligent about updating your address with old employers each and every time you’ve moved or changed jobs, they might have difficulty finding you at retirement. Plus, many companies have merged or gone out of business. This is where PBGC comes in.

Authorities caution that those with unclaimed money should contact PBGC on their own. Don’t divulge confidential information like addresses, social security numbers and the like to people calling on the phone claiming to be from this agency. Scam artists are trying to inch their way into agencies like these, posing as former employees collecting lost pensions.

Get more information about unclaimed money in the form of pensions by visiting PBGC.gov.

Who knows? There may be a tidy sum of unclaimed money waiting there with your name on it!

a2c5b5df34d paul1 rand paulDr. Rand Paul’s 10-length victory in the Kentucky GOP Senate Derby — a runaway victory worthy of Secretariat — is a sure sign that the anti-Obama, anti-federal, anti-incumbent Tea Party vote is going to be a central (if not THE central) story of the 2010 mid-term elections.

It’s up to President Obama and the Democrats to make libertarian thinking the issue in the fall — by proving that the philosophy, if actually implemented, would mean the end of Social Security, Medicare, student scholarships and even the Interstate Highway System.

Paul, named for libertarian radical writer Ayn Rand, favors shutting down the IRS, the Fed, the American military presence overseas, the Department of Education and much of the rest of the federal government.

Now, Kentucky (where I began my career) is not Berkeley. The anti-”revenuer” tradition is strong there. Sen. John McCain won the state over Barack Obama by 16 points. Still, a big win by a man with such views is remarkable. Paul, 47, a Bowling Green ophthalmologist who had never sought political office, started far behind the establishment favorite Grayson. But he surged ahead with a plain-spoken style and a platform rooted in small-government, anti-Washington thinking: term limits, a balanced-budget amendment, a requirement lawmakers read every word of legislation before it passes and a stipulation that laws spell out their constitutional underpinning.

“I think it’s towards people in power who are part of the problem,” Paul said on the Fox Business Network after the polls closed Tuesday. “They are worried about those who keep spending the money and seem to have no restrain. I think it’s an anti-big government message going on.”

Paul said he’s “not going to run away from the Tea Party message

69313dc2a5smr rubashkinLife sentence sought in kosher slaughterhouse case
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A former kosher slaughterhouse manager who was convicted of financial fraud not only cheated a bank out of $26 million, prosecutors claim, he also knowingly employed illegal immigrants.
Sholom Rubashkin was never convicted of immigration violations and his attorneys dispute the allegations, but they still could be an issue at his sentencing hearing Wednesday on 86 financial fraud charges.
Prosecutors are seeking a life term for Rubashkin, who was found guilty in November 2009 of creating faking invoices to show a lender that the Agriprocessors Inc. meatpacking plant in Postville, in northeastern Iowa, had more money flowing in than it did. The charges followed a May 2008 immigration raid at the plant, where 389 workers were arrested.
In court documents defending their sentencing recommendation, prosecutors said the Social Security Administration had warned Rubashkin he was employing hundreds of illegal immigrants three years before the raid but that he did everything he could “to maintain his illegal underpaid workforce.”
Defense attorneys argued that Rubashkin didn’t have the authority to hire or fire the workers.
Former assistant U.S. Attorney William Mateja said U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade could factor the immigration charges into her sentencing decision under a legal phrase called “other relevant conduct.” Instead of trying and proving the charges against Rubashkin, Mateja said prosecutors need to meet a lower bar: a preponderance of evidence.
Some have expressed shock at the proposed life term, and six former U.S. attorneys general have complained that prosecutors are seeking an excessive sentence. But others said that in the last few years, the government has come down increasingly hard on white collar criminals.
“White collar crime is being prosecuted more aggressively, and the sentences have been going up and up and up,” Mateja said. Other relevant conduct “can encompass all sorts of things, from obstruction of justice, to whether you were an organizer or leader, to other crimes.”
