ANKARA: Activists seized by Israeli authorities in the deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla returned home to European nations Tuesday, including a Turkish woman who brought her1-year-old baby on the voyage.
Nilufer Cetin said she agreed to be extradited from Israel after being warned jail conditions there would be “too harsh”” for the baby. She and her son had been on the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmaraship, one of six boats raided by Israeli commandos early Monday as they attempted to break the three-year blockade of Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid.
Israel has released some activists, but barred access to others taken off the six boats.
Cetin said she and her baby, the youngest passenger on board, had stayed in their cabin”s bathroom during the raid. Cetin”s husband, Ekrem, is the ship”s engineer and is still being held by Israeli authorities.
“The ship turned into a lake of blood,”” Nilufer Cetin told reporters. “We were aware of the possible danger”” in joining the trip, “but there are thousands of babies in Gaza. If we had reached Gaza we would have played with them and taken them food.””
They were among the first Turks returning from Israel after the flotilla was seized by Israeli commandos. Six Greeks also returned to Athens on Tuesday after being expelled from Israel, while dozens of others remained in Israeli custody.

A bomb killed another US soldier in Afghanistan, bringing to more than 300 the number of American troops killed in the war this year as NATO-led troops pressed deadly raids.
The latest death pushed to 301 the number of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan so far this year. The number is nearly twice the 155 American soldiers killed in 2008 when total foreign troop deaths numbered 295 for the entire year.
US President Barack Obama has ordered 30,000 extra US troops to Afghanistan in a bid to bring a quick end to the eight-year war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda that is increasingly unpopular at home.
NATO allies have pledged at least another 7,000 troops to back the new US-led drive, which will boost foreign troop numbers to more than 150,000.
