NEW YORK: Chasing his first U.S. Open championship, Rafael Nadal was so dominant, so determined, so defiant, his face curling into a sneer with every wallop of the ball.
With two marvelous weeks at Flushing Meadows capped by victory in a thrilling final Monday night, Nadal fashioned an emphatic answer to all those questions about whether he could grab the only major trophy missing from his collection.
Now owner of a career Grand Slam at age 24, champion at three consecutive major tournaments and nine overall, the No. 1-ranked Nadal is suddenly chasing something else: recognition as the greatest tennis player in history.
Approaching perfection for stretches — the guy played more than 40 points in a row without making an unforced error — Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a match filled with fantastic shotmaking by both men and interrupted by a

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple has launched a music-centered social network at iTunes and unveiled slick new iPod and Apple TV gadgets that promised to win the iconic company more devotees.
Ping was built into iTunes 10 software made available as a free download at itunes.com.
“It is sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes,” Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said, referring to the world’s top online social networking and microblogging services.
“It is not Facebook. It is not Twitter. It is something else we’ve come up with. It’s all about music,” he said.
Ping will automatically be available to the more than 160 million iTunes members worldwide when they update to the new version.
“Apple is now in the social networking game, but it is music centric which is really cool,” said analyst and Altimeter Group partner Michael Gartenberg.

obama memorial day

- President Barack Obama’s Memorial Day observance was stepped in its tracks Monday by a torrential downpour accompanied by bolts of lightning and booming thunder.
Obama thrilled the crowd at Abraham Lincoln National Ceremony by appearing under an umbrella as the rain poured down. But he did not deliver his prepared remarks honoring troops who died fighting for the United States.
Instead he urged the crowd to seek shelter in their cars.
“I am going back to mine,” he said from the podium, the storm so loud his words could barely be heard through the amplifiers.
As it became obvious that the storm was not going to ease, aides announced that Obama would not make his speech. Instead, he climbed onto buses where the crowds had taken shelter and greeted the visitors who had been soaked by the storm.
Obama was able before the storm to quietly lay a wreath at another part of the cemetery, and then stood, his head bowed as a bugler played “Taps.”

Obama last year marked Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery, outside Washington, where most presidents have laid wreaths on the national holiday. But this year he visited the cemetery about 50 miles southwest of Chicago, where he has been spending the long holiday weekend at his family home with his wife and daughters.
Vice President Joe Biden was to attend the ceremonies at Arlington in Obama’s stead.
Obama spoke at a Memorial Day ceremony in Elwood in 2005, when he was an Illinois senator.

Sean Brodrick writes: Our nation may be on the cusp of economic catastrophe — call it a panic, a meltdown, an implosion; I don’t care what you call it. But it’s bad. And it’s coming straight at you like a runaway bus.
In times of crisis, people naturally gravitate toward gold, because it’s the one investment that can hold its value when the fertilizer hits the fan. As for silver, well, any trader will tell you that silver is gold on steroids. When gold jumps, silver can leap twice as far, percentage-wise.
And both gold and silver are easier to buy and store than barrels of oil (another good bet in these trying times). I’ve been recommending oil ETFs like USO and OIL for months now — they’ve been doing well. Now, I think it’s the time to put some of your money in something else … and that something else is gold and silver.
What if I’m wrong — what if there is no economic catastrophe? What if the government is able to stop the crises that are lining up from turning into full-blown disasters? Well, gold and silver are STILL good bets to ride the economic tides that are surging now.
Today, I want to explore five reasons why I think our country is in real trouble … five crises that support the idea of buying gold and silver now …
