Lee hopeful over comeback to ODI cricket
WELLINGTON: Brett Lee may in the twilight of his career and having to knock hard on the door to regain a place in the Australian one-day international cricket side but the fast bowler is not about to button off his pace.
Lee, 34, arrived in Wellington today to play five matches for Wellington in the domestic Twenty20 championship beginning with tomorrow’s encounter against Auckland at the Basin Reserve and said he was still bowling at a fair clip.
Lee, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, put his hand up for a recall to the Australian one-day side when he helped guide his New South Wales side to a three-run victory over South Australia in a one-day championship match yesterday, conceding just four runs in the final over of the match.
“I hit a couple of high 140s (kilometres per hour), and tipped 150ks, yesterday on a pretty slow wicket, so I am

Adelaide hit by earth tremor Residents of Adelaide in South Australia were woken last night by a 3.8-magnitude earthquake.
The earthquake happened at 11:27pm and people living within a 50 kilometre radius of the quake reported tremors lasting for up to 15 seconds.
The epicentre was close to Mount Barker, 40 kilometres east of the capital, in the Adelaide Hills.
Mount Barker resident Robert says he heard a loud bang when the quake struck.
“We heard a terrific explosion,” he said.
“We live right opposite the golf course and lots of galahs roost in the trees and they made nearly as much noise as the earthquake itself but it was definitely an explosion.”
Paul in Bridgewater emailed ABC News Online, saying: “Whoa! We just had what seemed like an earthquake go through our house.”
Meanwhile, Steven from Moana said: “Several of my neighbours came out into the street and said that their houses shook like mine did. It lasted for about 10 to 15 seconds.”
There have been no reports of injuries or damage to buildings in the capital.
David Jepson, a seismologist from Geoscience Australia, says while tremors in the region are not unexpected, this quake was larger than normal.
“This would have been felt quite widely, up to about 50 kilometres from the epicentre, and we’ve had a number of felt reports from the region,” he said.
“That’s basically shown that it has been felt quite widely across Adelaide city.”
David Love, a seismologist with the South Australian Department of Primary Industry and Resources, says further activity along the fault line cannot be ruled out.
“This is probably the largest earthquake near the Adelaide area for quite a long time, possibly in excess of 20 years,” he said.
“An earthquake that size will give a fair shake near the epicentre, its certainly enough to wake people up, but most unlikey to cause much other than that.
“There is a chance of more activity, I think the chance is fairly low, but we can’t rule it out.”
Mr Love says data is still being collected but the event appears to have occurred more than 15 kilometres below ground.
“From the reports that have been coming in it looks like it may have been a relatively deep earthquake therefore lessening the effects immediately above it on the surface,” he said.
The quake was felt around Adelaide and more than 100 kilometres north of the city as well as on Kangaroo Island.

Australians Evacuated As Fires Rage

SYDNEY : Australian holidaymakers were evacuated on Thursday from a campsite in the path of raging wildfires, a day after an inferno destroyed 13 homes in the country’s southeast, officials said.
Fire crews in Victoria state were on high alert as strong winds and searing temperatures prompted extreme fire warnings, with four blazes burning out of control in the Gippsland region north of Melbourne.
“It’s going to be extremely hot, we’re looking at the spot forecast of temperatures of up to 40 degrees (Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit),” a spokesman for the Country Fire Authority (CFA) told state radio.
“Humidities will be low, and the wind will be out of the north gusting up to 55 or 60 kilometres (34 or 37 miles) an hour, which is a bad fire day.”
Camping areas in East Gippsland were evacuated and the CFA warned the main highway between Sydney and Melbourne could be closed as conditions worsened. Officials did not say how many campers had to flee.
The blazes come after February’s “Black Saturday” inferno killed 173 people and flattened more than 2,000 homes in the state, in Australia’s worst natural disaster of modern times.
Savage fires razed 13 homes and an emergency services building at Port Lincoln in the neighbouring state of South Australia Wednesday. Authorities said cooler temperatures and rain overnight had helped emergency crews bring some fires under control. Five firefighters were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation but no one was seriously injured.
Much of Victoria has been declared a catastrophic fire risk, when conditions are considered on a par with the Black Saturday firestorm and residents are urged to evacuate. Meanwhile farmers in central New South Wales were being advised to stock up on food and medical supplies ahead of a major Christmas Day deluge, with the weather bureau forecasting the worst floods in a decade.
“We’d hope most people would be prepared to be (trapped) out there for five days, because that’s how long it takes for floodwaters to subside,” a spokesman for the NSW state emergency service said.
The heavy rains are expected as cyclone Laurence moves inland after hammering the country’s west coast earlier this week.

SYDNEY : People ‘Fleeing For Lives’ in Australian Fires, Residents were ‘fleeing for their lives’ on Wednesday as wildfires burned out of control in South Australia, a witness said, as the state endured catastrophic fire conditions.
Less than a year after 173 people lost their lives in the Black Saturday fires in neighbouring Victoria state, a large fire burning outside Port Lincoln had already destroyed two buildings, officials said.
One resident, named Ray, told ABC radio he expected his house to be gone as when he was fleeing his house there were “flames above the roof.”
He added: “I’d just like to say to people who are out there on the roads and blocking the roads, people like me are fleeing for our lives.”
The Country Fire Service said the fire was about two kilometres (1.24 miles) outside of Port Lincoln and extremely dangerous.
It warned people in the area to take shelter in a solid structure immediately and to stay off the roads.
“You should not attempt to leave or enter this area as the roads will not be safe,” it said in a warning.
Another Port Lincoln resident, identified only as Jeff, told the ABC he could see “exploding big flames” streaming from the fire, adding that “some of them look to be at least 100-foot high.”
Firefighters are also battling another dangerous fire near the South Australian town of Kingston in the state’s southeast, as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) in the largely desert state.
Meanwhile residents began cleaning up the small communities in Western Australia’s Pilbara region on Wednesday after tropical Cyclone Laurence swept through, flattening buildings and uprooting trees.
The cyclone was sweeping eastward across the state but had been downgraded to a Category 1 storm — the lowest rating — and was expected to weaken further as it heads inland, officials said.

NEW DELHI: Terming the attacks on Indian students in Australia as “opportunistic, not racist”, Michael O’Brien, a senior minister in the South Australia state government, on Friday said his country will not tolerate these attacks.
“We are taking all necessary steps to curb these attacks which are opportunistic in nature. We don’t see them as racist attacks. They are criminal acts, acts of theft. But it seems, the sentiment here is not the same,” said O’Brien, the minister for employment, training and further education.
“We are here to assure that we are very tolerant society. Indian students in Australia are culturally enriching for us. We will not tolerate attacks on Indians students,” he said after a meeting with Overseas Indian Affairs Minister V. Ravi here.
The Australian minister said that it is very clear that parents in India are very concerned. “We are assuring that we will look after them and they are welcome in our country,” O’Brien added.
Ravi said: “The minister and I discussed several issues related to education and science. He has assured me that his government is taking step by step to ensure Indian students’ safety.”
Dozens of Indian students have been attacked in Australia throughout this year, making India react strongly. Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took up the issue with his Australian counterpart. The soaring sentiment in India, forced many Aussie authorities, including its prime minister, to tour India, to assure parents about the safety of their wards down under.
