KANDHAR: Kandahar is rocked by explosions and gunfire most nights but military commanders say that NATO leaders meeting this weekend can be told that the tactics in southern Afghanistan are working.
The bustling city that is the spiritual home of the Taliban has been flooded with troops. Combat outposts and heavily-fortified police stations have been built and there is a constant stream of convoys and patrols on the streets.
US commanders talk of a more co-ordinated approach to security with their Afghan counterparts while hundreds of millions of dollars are being poured in to the city to shore up its dilapidated infrastructure and improve daily life.
In rural areas around Kandahar, too, village elders who just a few months ago were afraid to be even seen working with the government are now participating in “shuras” or local council meetings to make their

After the Lost finale was the Jimmy Kimmel Live special, Aloha to Lost, sending off the recently-concluded series into limbo. Several of the show’s stars popped by to recall their favorite moments of the show, with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse presenting three alternate endings, and Kimmel getting a chance to poke fun at that.
That’s done now, and I don’t know what to make of it either.
Honestly, though, it’s hard to squeeze in six seasons worth of fond memories into an hour-long show. So, while we get some interesting bits from some members of the cast–Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson and Emilie de Ravin were on the show, among others–it mostly seemed like an underwhelming send-off. But maybe that is the point.
With that said, here are the highlights of Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost. Trust me, I tried squeezing things out.
Matthew Fox on the show’s ending: “What’s beautiful is that there’s room for interpretation depending on their spiritual beliefs.”
Michael Emerson on talk that he and Terry O’Quinn are hoping to work together again after Lost: “We try to think that kind of double-act we can do later in life, but once in a while we have a half-clever idea that we’re pitching around in street corners.”

Samdhong Rinpoche, the Tibetan PM into exile in India dismisses statement made by Chinese delegates after the spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, had said that unrest in Tibet was caused by resentment over Chinese rule.
The delegates claimed that China is very stable and united and that relations between Tibetans and the Han majority are harmonious and the Chinese people are furious with the Dalai Lama.
Rinpoche said that what Tibetans are saying is the truth, which the whole world knows and now this is for the world community to see who is speaking the truth. He said that Dalai Lama is doing everything for the betterment of the Tibetans.

KANDAHAR: A big blast near Pakistani Consulate in southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar jolted the town on Sunday morning. It was unclear what caused the blast.
“No casualties reported in the incident,” security sources said.
The explosion close to Pakistan mission in the eastern part of the city came after a series of overnight attacks by Taliban that killed some 35 people in various parts of Kandahar, the expected next target of a NATO-led offensive.
The governor of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province is demanding more troops to provide security after 12 explosions in the largest southern city killed dozens of people.
Gov. Turyakai Wesa says he is talking to the central government in Kabul about getting Afghan military reinforcements following the coordinated attacks that killed at least 33 people, including 10 attending a wedding. He told reporters Sunday that he also wants to coordinate with NATO forces to improve security.
Wesa said the attacks wounded at least 53. Kandahar is the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban insurgency and the next target of NATO and Afghan forces after a major push to take another militant stronghold in next-door Helmand province.

US investigators believe the army doctor accused of killing 13 people in a shooting rampage at a Texas military base acted alone, but his motive for the massacre was unclear.
President Barack Obama will Tuesday attend a memorial service to honor victims of the rampage at Fort Hood attributed to Muslim US army doctor Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who is also suspected of wounding 30 people. “All evidence at this point indicates the suspect allegedly acted alone,” Chris Grey, spokesman for the US Army criminal investigation division (CID), told reporters, adding that no motive had yet been established.

Dalai Lama visit to disputed Indian state

Dalai Lama visit to disputed Indian state,The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled leader, began on Sunday a week-long visit to a remote Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh also claimed by China in a trip that has renewed tensions between the Asian giants struggling to settle an old border dispute.
Beijing sees the visit as encouraging the Tibetan struggle by undermining Chinese territorial integrity and has slammed it as the Dalai Lama’s “scheme to wreck China’s relations” with India. But the Tibetan leader says it is merely a spiritual lecture tour.
The Dalai Lama arrived by helicopter in the remote Buddhist enclave nestled in the icy folds of the eastern Himalayas which he had passed through to flee Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against the Chinese rule.
Beijing calls the Dalai Lama a dangerous “splittist” plotting Tibetan independence, a charge he denies. He says he is merely seeking autonomy for Tibet.
Tawang, in Arunachal Pradesh state, the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama and part of territory Beijing considers as “southern” Tibet, is at the heart of the border row. But for the moment the people of Tawang want to forget the politics in the presence of their spiritual master.
China lays claim to 90,000 sq km (35,000 sq miles) of land on the eastern sector of the border. India says China occupies 38,000 sq km (15,000 sq miles) of territory in Aksai Chin plateau.
