CENTURION: South Africa’s fast bowlers ripped out three Indian batsmen cheaply when the first Test got under way after a rain delay at SuperSport Park here on Thursday.

India, sent in to bat, were 55 for three at tea.

Dale Steyn had Virender Sehwag caught at third man for nought before Morne Morkel struck twice within five balls to dismiss Gautam Gambhir (5) and Rahul Dravid (14).

Sachin Tendulkar was unbeaten on 22 and was the only batsman able to score boundaries in front of the wicket, twice pulling Lonwabo Tsotsobe to the fence and driving the same bowler through the covers for another four.

Gambhir was caught at first slip when he pushed away from his body and Dravid was trapped leg before wicket by a delivery which cut back sharply to provide Morkel with his 100th wicket in his 29th Test. Morkel took two wickets for four runs in seven overs,

The team, scheduled to play three Tests here, wrote two letters to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the additional commissioner (protection and security) of Mumbai police, saying it is unhappy with the security arrangements. Maj Gen Lawrence Fernando of the Lanka army, in charge of team security, wrote to the police and team manager Brendon Kuruppu to the BCCI and to Sri Lanka Cricket Board officials. Both expressed anxiety over some incidents during the team’s five-day stay in Mumbai.
The Lankans arrived in the city on November 8 and, after a three-day game, left for Ahmedabad on Saturday. They return to Mumbai for the third Test starting December 2. On one occasion, Fernando wrote, a vehicle got between the team bus and police escort van. In another, bowling coach Chandika Hathurasinghe heard “unusual noises” at 4.15 a.m, coming from the floor above, at Taj Land’s End, the team’s hotel.

India having already lost the series will be playing the seventh one-day international for pride.

Before the start of the series India hoped and were confident of beating the Australians and clinching the top spot in the ICC rankings.

Australia having won the series is leading by 4-2 and would hope to make it 5-2.

Whereas, India will try its level best to win the last ODI to save itself from embarrassment.

Team India have lost three successive matches at Mohali, Hyderabad and Guwahati and a much needed victory may provide them a boost in their confidence ahead of the Test, ODIs and twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka.

Australia’s Shane Watson and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will not be playing the 7th One day international as they will be flying back to Australia and take some rest and prepare themselves for the series against West Indies and Pakistan.

The Mumbai pitch would assist the pacers and overcast conditions would further encourage the fast bowlers.

However rain is forecast for tomorrow and even the practice session on the eve of the game had to be cancelled because of persistent showers.

Switzerland loses doubles Without Roger Federer

2df5c9409d49x249 Switzerland loses doubles Without Roger FedererGENOA, Italy: With Roger Federer sitting out, Switzerland lost a doubles match to Italy in a Davis Cup playoff and had its lead cut to 2-1.

Simone Bolelli and Potito Starace beat Marco Chiudinelli and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (3) Saturday.

In Thursday’s draw, Federer was selected to team with Wawrinka, reviving the team that won the Olympic doubles title last year. But Switzerland captain Severin Luthi decided to rest Federer in favor of the 117th-ranked Chiudinelli.

“We all know he’s had a very heavy schedule over the last days and weeks, so we preferred that he rest today and be ready for tomorrow,” Luthi said.

Federer lost in five sets to Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open final Monday, and he is still getting over jet leg from his trip across the Atlantic.

“For sure to have Roger on the team is always an advantage, but we knew we had a chance with this team, the Italians just played better today,” Luthi said. “(Federer) has no problem. You can expect him to play for sure tomorrow.”

Federer can seal the tie with a win over Andreas Seppi in the first of Sunday’s reverse singles matches on the red clay courts at the Valletta Cambiaso club.

The winner of the best-of-five series will return to the World Group next year.

Wawrinka beat Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 and Federer defeated Bolelli 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in Friday’s opening singles matches.

“We were talking about the solutions for (Federer) and the worst-case scenario would have been if we lose in five sets and then he would have to play three days in a row,” Luthi said. “It was better that he rested today and be ready for tomorrow.

“It’s not for sure that if Roger had played we would have won the doubles,” the Swiss captain added. “We had a strong team on the court today. It’s not like we were saying we’re giving this point to Italy. They were just stronger today.”

Italy also made a change in its doubles team, with Bolelli replacing Fabio Fognini alongside Starace.

Wawrinka was broken four times and also lost two points on his serve in the tiebreaker.

“For sure it was not my best doubles today,” Wawrinka said, adding that he and Chiudinelli struggled to play in unison, having never played together in the Davis Cup.

The Italians were pleased by the decision to rest Federer.

“We were a bit surprised he wasn’t playing. But it gave us a better chance of winning,” Bolelli said. “We played well and showed that without Federer we’re capable of winning in straight sets.”
