It appears as though Selena Gomez is finally over her good girl image at least when it comes to the television screen. The 19 year old is going to have a part in an upcoming movie that will have all of her fans surprised. It will be nothing like her role played in Wizards of Waverly Place.
Selena Gomez is expected to complete her world tour in South America in about three more weeks. Once she has returned to the States she will be in Florida with the indie filmmaker Harmony Korine. They will be working on the movie Spring Breakers which will also feature, James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, and Emma Roberts.
The three actresses will play the role of friends who decide to rob the bank in order to pay for their spring-break vacation. Selena Gomez will be playing the role of a character by the name of Faith.
Selena Gomez has indicated that the character she plays is more tamed out of the three. However, she also admits that she does get a little crazy every once in a while. When they are on spring-break the friends get into just about everything. They party, drink, and even go to jail.

Disappearances in Pakistan rose after 9/11: Amnesty International
August 30, 2011 by Trend PK

Amnesty International has called on Pakistan s government to end what it calls the growing practice of disappearances enforced by the state.
In an August 29 petition on its website, the human rights group alleged the disappearances have increased dramatically since Pakistan joined the American war on militancy after the
Sept. 11, 2001 airliner attacks on the United States.
Those detained – including activists, journalists and students – are sometimes found dead, with signs of torture. Thousands may have fallen victim to the practice, Amnesty said.
“The Prime Minister of Pakistan who controls the security agencies needs to urgently step in to address this human rights situation,” Amnesty said on its website.
Pakistan s army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said: “There has been no military operation conducted in Baluchistan since 2008. There is infighting going on between various militant groups, and they are kidnapping and killing each other”.

Kim will be presenting at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday so the newlyweds plan on taking a more extended honeymoon when their schedules free up.
In 2 States, Saif will play Punjabi boy who marries his Tamilian girlfriend

Saif Ali Khan is all set to play his first biographical character in Siddharth Anand’s 2 States. The role of the Punjabi ‘boy’ Krish who will marry
his Tamilian sweetheart Ananya but only with the consent of the two sets of parents is essentially the story of Bhagat’s own courtship and marriage in real
life.
Saif is expected to spend time with Chetan Bhagat to understand his character and get into Krish’s mind. In real life too, Saif is all set to get into a
cross-cultural marriage. 2 States is quite a learning curve for the Nawab.
Bhagat would like to exercise a more close vigil over the casting of the protagonists than he did in his novel’s other movie adaptations like Hello
(One Night At The Call Centre) and 3 Idiots (5 Point Someone). In both these cases Bhagat had no say. And he liked it that way.
But in 2 States, the personal element is extremely pronounced. For better or for worse Saif Ali Khan came to the storyboard from the outset as part of
the project.
And Bhagat is okay with that. Says India’s best-selling author, “It is not important for Krish to be played by a Punjabi or Ananya to be played by a
Tamilian. I’m aware Saif is not a Punjabi. To me that serves the story’s purpose even better. The whole idea of 2 States is to convey a pan-India
appeal. The novel is about an inter-state union. What better way to show this than to have a non-Punjabi actor playing my Punjabi protagonist?”
However, if Saif thinks he can just walk into the role of the Punjabi guy and claim it to be his own, as he did in Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal, then he
has another thought coming. Chetan Bhagat would like the Punjabi protagonist’s projection in 2 States to be freed of stereotypes and external
trappings.
Says Bhagat, “We’re always shown Punjabis and Tamils in a culture-specific light. I wouldn’t want my protagonists to be portrayed with regional
eccentricities.”
In brief, Saif has a lot of preparation to do this time. Unlike the Sardarji in Love Aaj Kal, the Punjabi boy in 2 States would have to be
played as a product of a pan-Indian sensibility. This is not to say he can play it Saif. It would require a personality transformation far more subtle than
Saif’s Langda Tyagi in Omkara with very little physical prop.
Director Siddharth Anand who is the star’s old friend is looking at a large stretch of preparation-time for his hero which Saif would be able to give only
after he completes his home production Agent Vinod.
Chetan Bhagat admits 2 States is his most personal novel to date and the screen adaptation most precious to him. “Like Krish in my novel I fell in love with
a Tamil girl and we decided to marry only with the parent’s consent. In the film Ek Duuje Ke Liye when the Tamil boy decides to marry the Punjabi girl their
parents slap and beat up their respective offsprings. Aaj ke din kaun bachche maar khayenge? So you could say 2 States is like Ek Duuje Ke
Liye meeting Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.”

norman hand’

Former Walterboro star and NFL player Norman Hand died Friday morning in Colleton County at the age of 37. A cause of death has not been released by the county coroner.
Hand was an honorable mention All-American by Parade Magazine and USA Today his senior season at Walterboro. He was also named the SCHSL Defensive Lineman of the Year in 1990.
He went on to play at the University of Mississippi after transferring from Itawamba Junior College. He had 3.5 sacks his senior year with the Rebels and was a second team All-SEC selection.
From there, Hand was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins in 1995 and went on to have a 10 year career in the league playing with the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and the New York Giants.
He ended his pro career after the 2004 season with 22.5 sacks and 2 interceptions.
Hand was the first football player to reach the NFL from Walterboro.
His heart was big too. Pro sports are often very homophobic. I once saw a TV talk show host ask Norman if he thought players’ sexual “preference” could cause problems. Norman said, “No, I think it’s the people who worry about their teammates’ private lives who cause the problems. They need to mind their own business about things that don’t hurt them.” He already had nine-tenths of my heart, and I gave him the tenth tenth at that moment.

meet android

Hey if you’re in the UK head over to Google and type in “meet Android.” Then hit “I’m Feeling Lucky.” Go ahead, do it. I dare you. You’ll meet Android alright, as that little green bugger tears down your search to reveal an Easter egg ad for the Nexus One.
For those not in the UK (myself included), you’ll just have to head over to Gizmodo to see a video of the events that unfold. Pretty cool stuff on Google’s part. Those in the States only get redirected to a boring Google I/O page if we attempt to recreate this feat.
[UPDATE: Thanks to the commenters for pointing out a rather thoughtless blunder on my part: for those not in the UK (again, myself included), just head over to google.co.uk and follow the above steps to be greeted with the Android robot in person…er, not via a pre-recorded video. Or even more simple yet, if you don’t care for the neat gimmick of clicking the “I’m feeling lucky”

POLICE OFFICERS have risky jobs. There is no telling when a routine traffic stop might turn deadly, or a criminal investigation violent.
But in this era of scrutinizing public worker salaries, police officer pay should not be exempt from review. Their jobs may be potentially dangerous as well as a great public service, but they are funded by the same strapped taxpayers who are shouldering municipal worker and teacher salaries, too.
One look at the take-home pay for officers employed in Bergen County reveals that their salaries not only dwarf those of public school teachers, the object of Governor Christie’s budget-cutting wrath, but, when overtime is factored in, can rival those of upper-level managers in the private sector. Towns are broke. Residents are broke. These salaries are not sustainable.
Bergen County police officers made an average base salary of $103,649 last year, Staff Writers Giovanna Fabiano and Dave Sheingold reported. The average police salary was $120,234 in Closter and $122,635 in Hasbrouck Heights. Without overtime pay. In Englewood, overtime among officers averaged $21,000 last year, with some earning more than $50,000 with overtime and extra perks.
Passaic County officers made less, but certainly nothing to sneeze at. The average base salary was $87,860, with Wayne police making around $118,000 and West Milford police $105,353.
Work in some municipalities is more dangerous than work in others — a night shift in Paterson is potentially more perilous than a night shift in Rochelle Park. Yet the pay is not commensurate. In fact, in general the pay is just the opposite. Paterson police earn, on average, almost $50,000 less than their colleagues in Rochelle Park, yet the violent crime rate in Paterson is about 13 times greater.
This topsy-turvy arrangement, coupled with the luxury benefits of longevity pay, sick-day payouts and muster pay in some towns, cries out for review. We are puzzled by the governor’s loud gusto when taking on teachers, but his at-least-until-now whispered approach to police. Citing law enforcement’s relative risk, higher pension contributions and lack of 4 and 5 percent annual raises is weak when staring at $120,000 base pay plus benefits for some one-square-mile towns with little crime. Especially when the highest pay generally is doled out in lower-crime areas.

The jackpot for Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing climbed to $166 million after no players matched all six numbers in Tuesday night’s game. Meanwhile, the top prize for tonight’s Powerball multi-state lottery is a whopping $252 million. The numbers in Tuesday night’s Mega Million lottery were 5, 8, 10, 34 and 42, and the “Mega Ball” was 25.
There were also no $250,000 second-prize winners in Georgia, although 12 players in other states matched the first five numbers but not the Mega Ball.
The Powerball jackpot has been steadily growing since March 13, when Sandra McNeil of Morristown, N.J., won a $211.7 million top prize.
According to a Georgia Lottery Corp. spokeswoman, a single winner matching all six numbers in tonight’s Powerball drawing would have the choice of $252 million paid over 29 years, or a single payment of approximately $121 million.

Toyota duplicates SUV problem
Toyota Motor Corp(7203.T) confirmed results of a Consumer Reports test revealing a handling problem in a Lexus sport utility vehicle and sales will not resume until it is fixed, the automaker said on Friday.
Separately, U.S. Congressional investigators sought more information about the review of electronic throttles by the automaker and its consult on the matter as part of a broader review this year of unintended acceleration.
Energy and Commerce Committee lawmakers scheduled a May 6 hearing and asked that Toyota U.S. sales chief Jim Lentz testify. Lentz appeared before the panel in February.
Both developments and news of a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada of 870,000 Sienna mini vans for a cold-weather corrosion risk came ahead of Monday’s deadline for Toyota to decide whether to appeal a proposed $16.4 million Transportation Department fine.
U.S. safety regulators alleged earlier this month that Toyota knowingly hid information from regulators and violated regulations by delaying a recall in January for gas pedals that would not spring back as designed.
Toyota has said it had done a poor job of communicating before its recalls, and has taken steps to address the problem.
The latest safety issues come as Toyota is trying to repair its image for quality and reliability in the United States following massive recalls, congressional and regulatory investigations, and a flood of new lawsuits.
Toyota shares fell less than 1 percent on Friday in New York to $79.37.
Toyota halted U.S. sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 luxury SUV on Tuesday and stopped production overall after Consumer Reports warned of a rollover risk and issued a rare warning advising consumers not to buy it.
Road handling tests by the magazine published by Consumers Union found that vehicle’s rear end could slide out in a tight turn.
Lexus spokesman Bill Kwong said in a statement that “our engineers in Japan replicated the driving procedure and have duplicated the Consumer Reports result.”
Toyota was “evaluating potential remedies” and it was too early to determine the timing of any repairs, Kwong said.
He added that sales will remain suspended until the company is confident the issue is resolved.
David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said on Thursday the agency would conduct its own tests on the Lexus used by Consumer Reports and on others of the same model.
Strickland applauded Toyota’s handling of the warning on the Lexus SUV, which is a departure from the stiff criticism from regulators and lawmakers over how the company managed recent recalls.
Toyota recalled more than 6 million cars and trucks in the United States across its product line in October 2009 and in January for unintended acceleration linked to the “sticky pedal” problem and for floor mats that can trap the accelerator.
NHTSA engineers are in the midst of another review to address lingering questions about whether there are possible software or other electronic glitches in Toyota throttles and whether they could be behind consumer complaints of unintended acceleration.
U.S. safety investigators have never found any problems with the Toyota throttle systems, but lawmakers, safety advocates and others have questioned whether investigations over the years were thorough enough.
Preliminary work by Toyota engineering consultant Exponent (EXPO.O) showed no problems with the throttles, Toyota has said. The automaker has also said its internal reviews over the years have found that the system is sound.
Congress wants more answers, however.
In a letters on Friday to Toyota’s Lentz and Exponent officials, Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Bart Stupak sought contracts, correspondence, reports and analysis related to Exponent’s work for Toyota.
Toyota said in a statement it is “more than willing to meet with the committee and discuss” electronic throttle testing and steps to improve quality assurance.
Waxman and Stupak took issue with Toyota’s conclusion in March that it had rigorously examined its throttle systems and found no problems.

Volcano smoking bands out of Coachella
A volcano in Iceland is playing havoc with a music festival more than 4,000 miles away.
As CNN’s Denise Quan reported this morning, several UK bands are scrambling to make it to the Coachella music festival in Indio, California – but thanks to the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, air traffic has been grounded in parts of Europe. That’s meant that some bands aren’t going to make their scheduled slots.
Among those that have canceled: the Cribs (recently joined by Johnny Marr), Frightened Rabbit and now Bad Lieutenant.
“Bad Lieutenant will not be able to play Coachella tomorrow,” a spokesperson for the band told CNN. “They are stuck in the UK and unable to get a flight out. Everyone is very bummed about it.”
Among the acts who are playing the three-day festival – which begins today – are Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz (a UK act already in the States), Pavement, Devo and Julian Casablancas.
