Bank Tied to Candidate Is Shuttered
Illinois regulators Friday shuttered a Chicago bank closely tied to the Democratic candidate running for President Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat.
Broadway Bank is owned by the family of Illinois state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, who is locked in a competitive race in this year’s elections. His role at the institution has become a central issue in the race.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. sold the bank’s $1.1 billion in deposits and essentially all of its assets to MB Financial Bank of Chicago. The FDIC estimates the bank’s failure will cost the deposit-insurance fund $394.3 million. MB Financial and the FDIC entered into an agreement in which the agency will share losses on $878.4 million of Broadway Bank’s assets.
Late Friday, Mr. Giannoulias told the Associated Press that the collapse of the bank will inspire him to work harder in his bid to win the Senate race. He said he knows first hand the impact that the economy has had on people and businesses in Illinois.
“There was no bailout for my father’s bank. It is an incredibly sad and heartbreaking day for me and for my family. This bank has helped thousands of people when no one else would give them a chance,” he said. “What has happened tonight is just a sliver of the hardship which has become endemic in our society only strengthens my resolve.”
More than 200 banks have failed since the beginning of 2008, many struck down by bad construction loans and mortgages. Illinois in particular has seen a large number of failures.
Four years ago, Mr. Giannoulias used his position as a top official at the institution as a primary credential in his campaign to become treasurer in 2006. Since the bank has run into problems, his opponent, Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, has used it as a bludgeon against him in their Senate race.
Mr. Kirk overtook Mr. Giannoulias in several recent polls and now enjoys a single-digit lead. He also has the edge in fund-raising.
Mr. Giannoulias has tried to soften the blow by predicting the bank’s demise. He has also repeatedly said that when he left the bank four years ago, it was on solid financial ground

2010 NFL Draft: LeGarrette Blount goes undrafted
A year of turmoil proved too much for former Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount to overcome in the eyes of the NFL.
Blount, projected by some experts as a potential third-round pick before last season began, was not selected during the seven-round, three-day NFL Draft held Thursday through today.
All is not lost, however. Blount likely will sign with a team as an undrafted rookie free agent. But falling out of the draft certainly was not expected by many.
Blount watched the draft from his hometown of Perry, Fl. Capturing his experience were ESPN cameras set up in his parent’s home. Early in the sixth round, ESPN checked in on Blount who was laying on a couch with his eyes closed.
The good news for Blount is that he now can select a team to sign with that will provide him with the best opportunity to succeed in a role as a power back.

Joe Webb is still waiting to hear his name called in the NFL draft
The wait continues for former UAB standout Joe Webb.
Webb was thought to fit somewhere in between the third round and fifth round in the NFL draft. Well, the fifth round just ended and Webb has yet to be selected.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the teams that showed the most pre-draft attention to Webb. The Steelers had a fourth-round pick, three fifth-round picks and another fifth round pick they traded to the Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers used none of those picks on Webb.
If he does get picked, Webb won’t be the first quarterback turned receiver to go in this year’s draft. That honor went to Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards, who was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (89th overall pick) on Saturday

The New York Jets have signed Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft.
Holmes made a brilliant catch in the dying seconds of Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl victory against Arizona, however it appears the Steelers have tired of his off-the-field misdemeanours.
Reports in the US have claimed he will be hit with a four-match ban for violating the league’s substance abuse policy while he is also facing a police investigation after a woman claimed he threw a glass in her face in a nightclub in Florida.
Holmes has strenuously denied the women’s allegations against him – however with the 26-year-old having previously been in trouble with the police, the Steelers look to have run out of patience.
Holmes scored five touchdowns for 1,248 yards receiving in 2009 for the Steelers, who missed the play-offs last year.

nickname “Mr. Steel Arm”, is a former American football quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL). He played 14 seasons. He is a football analyst and co-host of Fox NFL Sunday. In a six-year span, he won an unprecedented four Super Bowl titles with Pittsburgh (1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979), becoming the first quarterback to do so, and led the Steelers to eight AFC Central championships. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989, his first year of eligibility.
A tough competitor, Bradshaw had a powerful – albeit at times erratic – arm and called his own plays throughout his football career. His physical skills and on-the-field leadership played a major role in Pittsburgh Steelers history. During his career, he passed for more than 300 yards in a game only seven times, but three of those performances came in the post-season, and two of those in Super Bowls. In four career Super Bowl appearances he passed for 932 yards and 9 touchdowns, both Super Bowl records at the time of his retirement. In 19 postseason games he completed 261 passes for 3,833 yards.
