Australia to field first against Kiwis
NAGPUR: Australia won the toss and chose to field first in their World Cup Group A clash with New Zealand in Nagpur.
Ricky Ponting’s defending champions have named an unchanged side after their win over Zimbabwe on Monday.
Both teams observed a minute’s silence before the match to honour victims of the Christchurch earthquake.
The Kiwis have promoted middle-order batsman Jamie How for all-rounder Jacob Oram.
The match is set to start in overcast conditions with a top temperature of 31 degrees forecast.
Teams
Australia: Ricky Ponting (capt), Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Cameron White, David Hussey, Steve Smith, Jason Krejza, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, John Hastings (12th man).
New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, James Franklin, Scott Styris, Jamie How, Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, Hamish Bennett, Kane Williamson (12th man).
Australia pacemen restrict New Zealand to just 206
NAGPUR: The Australian pace duo of Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait vindicated captain Ricky Ponting’s decision to field first by skittling trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand for 206 on Friday.
After a sombre start to the day, in which the teams observed a minute’s silence following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Christchurch, Johnson (four for 33) and Tait (three for 35)
shared seven wickets among themselves.
Brett Lee and Shane Watson also chipped in with a wicket apiece, while Steve Smith was the only spinner to pick up a wicket.
Ruthless Australia thump Kiwis by seven wickets
NAGPUR: Ruthless Australia compounded the miseries of rivals New Zealand by notching up a seven-wicket victory in their World Cup match on Friday.
Chasing an easy target of 207 runs for victory, Australia openers Shane Watson (62) and Brad Haddin (55) piled on 133 for the first wicket in just 18 overs as they punished the erratic bowling of New Zealand in the Group A encounter.
The start ensured that there were no hiccups, though both openers departed in the same over to paceman Hamish Bennett.
Captain Ricky Ponting (12) followed soon after, stumped brilliantly down the leg side by Brendon McCullum off Tim Southee.
Vice captain Michael Clarke and Cameron White saw Australia home in just 34 overs with an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 40
runs to extend their team’s unbeaten run in World Cup to 31 matches.
The Kiwi bowlers did not help their cause by bowling 32 extras, which included 29 wides.
The match was played against a somber backdrop following the devastating earthquake in Christchurch earlier this week.
Both teams observed a minute’s silence and wore black arm-bands, while the New Zealand flag flew at half mast in memory of the victims of the earthquake, which has claimed at least 113 lives with 228 people still missing.
Some of New Zealand players struggled to keep their emotions in check as they linked arms while their national anthem was being played before the start of the match.
After the solemn start, the Australian pace duo of Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait vindicated Ponting’s decision to field first by skittling New Zealand for a 206.
Overnight rain and a little cloud cover prompted Ponting to bowl first in the day match and some fiery fast bowling saw the
Kiwis lose their first six wickets with just 73 runs on the board.
Johnson (four for 33) and Tait (three for 35) shared seven wickets among themselves, while Brett Lee and Shane Watson also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Steve Smith was the only spinner to pick up a wicket. AGENCIES
Australia rest Ponting for ODIs against India
Australian captain Ricky Ponting, fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and allrounder Shane Watson have all been rested for the 3 match ODI series against India.
The National Selection Panel announced a 14 man squad for the ODI series.
The three will sit out the October 17, 20 and 24 games in India, following two Test matches, which come just a month before the much-anticipated home series against England starts on November 25.
The 14-man squad is: Michael Clarke (c), Cameron White (vc), Doug Bollinger, Callum Ferguson, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, Mike Hussey, Shaun Marsh, Clint McKay, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and David Warner.
Afridi”s praise of Hauritz unlikely to sway Aussies
ST LUCIA: Nathan Hauritz may have received the support of Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi but he could yet miss Australia”s opening World Twenty20 match against the defending champions.
Early indications are that Australia will do without off-spinner Hauritz when they begin their tournament against Pakistan here on Sunday, a day after the title holders face Bangladesh in Group A at the Beausejour Stadium.
Hauritz has not taken a wicket in either of the team”s warm-up matches, although in Thursday”s fixture against the Windward Islands he found himself bowling against Australia on the way to figures of none for 34 in three overs.
Nevertheless, leg-spinning all-rounder Afridi said of Hauritz: “On these types of tracks he”d be very difficult for the opposition.”
But Australia look likely to field Steve Smith, himself a leg-spinning all-rounder, while getting any remaining slow bowling from specialist batsmen such as captain Michael Clarke and David Hussey, both well capable of contributing with bat and ball at this level.
Outsiders Zimbabwe beat Clarke”s men by one run here on Tuesday to revive memories of the Africans” five-wicket victory over Australia at the inaugural World Twenty20 in Cape Town in 2007.
However, Australia”s chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, told reporters at Beausejour here on Thursday: “We”re in pretty good shape but it”s going to be a big game for us (against Pakistan).”
Australia have plenty of fast bowling options too in Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait, Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson.
“We”ve obviously got a good pace attack and we”re going to use that in these conditions and in Barbados (where Australia play Bangladesh on Wednesday) as well,” Hilditch said.
“We think we”re pretty well placed with spin bowling,” the former Test batsman added. “Steve Smith did a really good job, we got good spin out of Michael Clarke and David Hussey and of course Nathan Hauritz. When the conditions are spin-friendly we”ve got the opportunity to play more spinners.”
Ryan Harris, due to arrive in St Lucia on Friday as a replacement for injured fast bowler Brett Lee, out of the tournament with a forearm strain, is unlikely to be thrown straight in against Pakistan.
