MOHALI: India grabbed two big wickets in quick succession in the afternoon to restore balance in the opening Test against Australia on Friday.
Australia were comfortably placed at 154-1 following half-centuries from skipper Ricky Ponting (71) and opener Shane Watson (75 not out) before reaching 179-3 in their first innings at tea on the first day.
The tourists lost well-set Ponting and vice-captain Michael Clarke (14) in the space of 18 runs. The Australian captain was run out, while Clarke was caught at first slip off spinner Harbhajan Singh.
Watson, dropped on nought and 37, has so far hit seven fours in his 169-ball knock.
Ponting, averaging just 20.85 in 12 Tests in India before this match, looked set to play a big knock before he was run out by Suresh Raina’s direct-hit at the striker’s end from mid-wicket.

Uruguay striker Forlan gets shock best player nod
JOHANNESBURG: Uruguay striker Diego Forlan was on Sunday surprisingly awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2010 World Cup.
Atletico Madrid striker Forlan grabbed five goals at the tournament as his country finished in fourth place after losing Saturday”s third-place play-off to Germany.
The former Manchester United player polled 23.4 percent of the votes awarded by media covering the tournament with Wesley Sneijder, of runners-up Holland, on 21.8 percent, and David Villa, of newly-crowned champions Spain, taking 16.9 percent.
“This is award which I won thanks to my teammates,” wrote Forlan on his Twitter account, a post accompanied by a photograph where the striker is standing with other players.
“It was taken before they threw me in the swimming pool,” he explained.
Uruguay”s performance at the World Cup was the country”s best in 40 years.
Forlan succeeds Zinedine Zidane who was named top player of the 2006 World Cup despite his infamous red card in the final defeat to Italy.
Forlan”s victory was a surprise as five players who featured in Sunday”s final (Villa, Xavi, Andres Iniesta of Spain and Holland”s Arjen Robben and Sneijder) all figured in the list of 10 nominees.
The 31-year-old Forlan also won the Europa League last season with Atletico Madrid.
Thomas Mueller was given two reasons to celebrate after the German starlet was named Young Player of the World Cup and picked up the Golden Boot for the tournament”s top scorer.
The 20-year-old Bayern Munich forward finished the tournament with five goals, the same number as Forlan, Sneijder and Villa.
He was awarded the Golden Boot because he had supplied three assists, which was more than any of his rivals.
Mueller was elected the tournament”s outstanding young player by FIFA”s Technical Study Group, beating off competition from Ghana winger Andre Ayew and Mexican forward Giovanni dos Santos.
Spain”s Iker Casillas was voted the best goalkeeper after his side won the trophy by beating Holland 1-0 in the final.
Casillas, who twice crucially denied Robben with the score at 0-0, gets FIFA”s Golden Glove award after conceding just two goals in seven matches.
Capping a fine night for Spain was the award for fair play for having the best disciplinary record.
Germany rout Argentina to march into semi-finals
CAPE TOWN: Striker Miroslav Klose celebrated his 100th cap with two second-half goals to help Germany reach the World Cup semi-finals with a 4-0 demolition of Diego Maradona”s outclassed Argentina on Saturday.
Germany now face either Spain or Paraguay, who meet later on Saturday, in Durban next Wednesday with a place in the final at Johannesburg”s Soccer City on July 11 at stake.
A third-minute goal by Thomas Mueller gave Germany a 1-0 lead, before the three-time champions turned the screw after the interval.
Klose netted in the 68th minute, centre-back Arne Friedrich scored his first for his country six minutes later before Klose completed the rout with an 89th-minute volley which gave him a 14th World Cup goal, just one behind Ronaldo”s record of 15.
German coach Joachim Loew got the better tactically of a bewildered Maradona as the men in black defended doggedly and attacked in numbers.
World footballer of the year Lionel Messi was tightly marked by Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger as Argentina”s star-studded side failed to shine.
The only blot on Germany”s copybook was Mueller”s first-half yellow card which sees him suspended for the semi-final.
Klose was lucky not to receive a yellow card in the opening minute, when he fouled Argentina captain Javier Mascherano, but the Germans were soon in front.
They took the lead after just three minutes when Mueller headed home a Schweinsteiger free-kick for his fourth goal of the tournament, the ball deflecting in off goalkeeper Sergio Romero”s leg.
Argentina right-back Nicolas Otamendi earned the first yellow card of the game on 11 minutes for a foul on Friedrich.
The South Americans” first sight of goal came when Messi slid a pass through the German defence to Carlos Tevez, but goalkeeper Manuel Neuer raced from his line to deal with the threat.
Mueller”s bright start then suffered a setback when he picked up his yellow card for handling the ball on 35 minutes.
Argentina had an encouraging start to the second-half as Real Madrid new boy Angel Di Maria fired a long-range shot which had Neuer at full-stretch on 48 minutes and Per Mertesacker blocked a shot from Tevez on 54 minutes.
But Germany extended their lead when Podolski found space on the left flank and passed back inside for Klose to score on 68 minutes.
Schweinsteiger helped make sure of Germany”s place in the last four when he darted through the Argentinian defence to give Friedrich a simple tap in on 74 minutes to claim his first international goal on his 77th appearance.
Argentina”s defence crumbled as Klose completed the demolition with his 52nd goal for Germany as he volleyed home a cross from Mesut Ozil just before the final whistle.

Game four of between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the NBA Playoffs went to to the team that needed it most – the Thunder.
Led by star forward Kevin Durant and second-year point guard Russell Westbrook, the Thunder defeated the Lakers 110-89.
Durant finished with 22 points and Westbrook added a well-rounded game with 18 points, six assists and eight rebounds. Kobe Bryant finished with just 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.
Shocking most analysts and nearly all Lakers fans, the young Thunder are now even with LA at two wins a piece.
The Thunder got off to an energetic and efficient start, outscoring the Lakers 29-17 in the first quarter.
Their defense held the Lakers to their lowest first quarter point total of the entire series. Lakers star guard Bryant struggled noticeably offensively.
The Thunder didn’t let up in the next period. “You’re playing hard, you’re playing together,” Scott Brooks said to his team during a 2nd quarter timeout as they led by 12.
Rookie guard James Harden then converted a dramatic four-point play, extending the lead to 16.
Bryant had a nightmarish first half, finishing with less then five points, which led to announcer Doris Bourke to comment, “He (Bryant) is not right physically.” At halftime, the Thunder led 55-42.
By the middle of the third quarter, Oklahoma was up 18. Play-by-play man Dan Shulman commented that the Thunder were dominating in virtually every aspect of the game.
The youthfulness and athleticism of the Thunder seemed to be wearing on the Lakers. On offense, the defending champs were mostly resorting to watching Bryant go one-on-one.
The Thunder really turned their swagger on as they sensed the Lakers up against the ropes. They closed the third quarter on a 10-3 run and Durant looked as enthusiastic as he has all series.
Noticeably absent from tonight’s game was the Lakers’ bench, which until the fourth quarter only saw one player (forward Lamar Odom) actually score.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Thunder led 86-64.
The Oklahoma crowd, witnessing just their second ever postseason home game, chanted wildly, “BEAT LA, BEAT LA.”
With victory almost certain, Lakers’ Head Coach Phil Jackson decided to leave his stars on the bench. Likewise, Thunder coach Scott Brooks kept his starters on the sidelines and let his reserves finish the game.
Bryant left the bench in the fourth quarter and headed to the locker room with the team’s massage therapist to get his ailments worked on.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Brandon Roy was so antsy to return to the Trail Blazers that he campaigned via text message to coach Nate McMillan.
“Coach, I think I should play,” he texted on the eve of Saturday’s playoff game against the Phoenix Suns.
Luckily for the Blazers, McMillan agreed.
Roy was activated Saturday, then helped Portland to a 96-87 victory that evened the first-round series at two games apiece.
Eight days removed from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, Roy made his surprising return to the court to the strains of the theme from “Rocky” blaring from the Rose Garden sound system, then went on hit a key 3-pointer late in the game that shifted the momentum squarely in the Trail Blazers’ favor.
“I just didn’t feel right sitting in the training room knowing that I could contribute — so I just had to keep begging coach,” Roy said afterward.
The first-round series now moves back to Phoenix on Monday night. It wasn’t supposed to include Roy, but things changed Friday.
McMillan said it was a “long, sleepless night” in deciding to play Roy, the team’s unquestioned leader. He even brought owner Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, in on the discussion.
“All kinds of things went through my head, thinking about the risk of him reinjuring himself,” McMillan said. “But our doctors didn’t feel like Brandon could hurt himself.”
LaMarcus Aldridge, who had been double-teamed all series long without Roy, benefited the most from his return, with 31 points and 11 rebounds.
“As soon as he checked into the game, I got my first open shot with nobody guarding me, so I was thinking thank God he’s back,” Aldridge said.
Roy, who had the surgery to repair a torn meniscus, came into the game to a deafening ovation with 4:06 left in the first quarter and made a layup about a minute later to put Portland ahead 20-19.
Roy played a relatively quiet 26 minutes, but hit a 3-pointer with 4:55 left that gave Portland a 85-79 lead.
