BEIJING: Flights were disrupted, ferry services cut and at least 160,000 people have been evacuated as Typhoon Megi, one of the strongest storms to hit the region in years, headed Friday for southern China.
Megi — which killed at least 36 people when it ripped across the Philippines and has left 20 Chinese nationals missing in Taiwan — was expected to make landfall either late Friday or early Saturday in Fujian province.
So far authorities in Fujian have evacuated more than 150,000 people from low-lying areas, while 10,000 others have been moved to safer ground in Guangdong.
The State Oceanic Administration issued a yellow storm surge warning, saying waters could exceed the danger levels. Tens of thousands of fishing boats in Fujian and neighbouring Guangdong province were ordered back to port.

BEIRUT: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left for Lebanon on Wednesday, embarking on a two-day visit underlining the power of Hezbollah which has put Western-backed factions in the government on the defensive.
Hundreds of posters of Ahmadinejad and Iranian flags have gone up in Beirut and Hezbollah’s heartland in southern Lebanon in support of the Iranian leader ahead of his first state visit to the country.
Ahmadinejad plans to meet Lebanon’s president and the pro-Western prime minister – but the biggest splash will come from his welcome by Hezbollah.
Iran has ironclad ties to Hezbollah, which boasts the strongest arsenal in the country and in many Shiite areas runs nearly a state-within-a-state.
During his visit, Ahmadinejad is scheduled to make public appearances expected to draw giant crowds in two Hezbollah strongholds – one in south

LEEDS: Captain Shahid Afridi called for the review system to be introduced into one-day internationals but saved his strongest criticism for Mohammad Irfan after another loss to England.
In what turned out to be a tense finish, England won the second one-day international by four wickets with three balls to spare as they went 2-0 up in their five-match series against Pakistan.
But the result might have been different had not 7ft seamer Irfan, positioned at short fine leg, dropped a glance from Andrew Strauss when the England captain had made just 23.
It was a costly error with Strauss going on to make 126 as England, replying to Pakistan’s 294 for eight, finished on 295 for six.
Strauss also appeared to be given another reprieve on 38 when wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, changing direction and diving full length to his right, held what he thought was a
World reluctant in sending aid to Pakistan due to poor past record: Report
The Daily Telegraph newspaper, citing unnamed senior Pakistani officials, said there were fears this diversion of funds would put off foreign donors from giving money to help 20 million people currently affected by heavy floods.
There is reluctance, even people in this country are not giving generously into this flood fund because they’re not too sure the money will be spent honestly, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif told the newspaper. The Daily Telegraph said more than 300 million pounds of aid for the 2005 earthquake, which killed more than 73,000 people, has yet to be handed over to Pakistan’s Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA). It cited one senior ERRA official as saying they were told in March 2009 that 12 billion Pakistan rupees was being diverted from their budget to other government projects. In June this year, ERRA staff were again told their budget was being cut, from 43 billion rupees for 2010-11 to just 10 billion, the newspaper said. The paper also said it had visited the town of Balakot, where 5000 people were killed in the earthquake. Despite a promise to rebuild it on a new site, no new roads had been completed nor had building construction begun. Pakistan’s finance secretary, Salman Siddiq, denied any foreign aid funds had been diverted and told the paper: No cuts were imposed last year.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that 20 million people had been affected by the worst floods in the country’s history, for which the United Nations has appealed for $US460 million in aid.
Superbug resistant to all antibiotics discovered in England
Scientists in England have discovered a Superbug, a new super bacteria, resistant to the strongest antibiotics. This new bacteria is said to have entered hospitals in England. Health experts say the bacteria that make an enzyme called NDM-1 had been re-enter through a variety of patients in British hospitals had to go abroad to visit countries such as India and Pakistan to undergo medical treatments like plastic surgery.
Scientists fear the super bacteria will spread throughout the world. Strict control and new drugs against bacteria that are needed, according to the Lancet medical journal. Otherwise it is feared would spread very quickly.
NDM-1 can live in diverse bacteria such as E.coli and enzymes that can makes these bacteria resistant to the most powerful antibiotics, carbapenems.
This type of antibiotics usually used only for emergency situations and to eradicate hard to treat infections caused by drug resistant bacteria. Experts fear NDM-1 now would infect other types of bacteria that have developed resistance to many types of antibiotics.
In the end it may cause dangerous infections that can spread rapidly from one person to another that its almost impossible to treat.

kent state

As the nation marks the 40th anniversary of the Kent State antiwar protests Tuesday, previously undisclosed FBI documents have emerged, showing that one or more gunshots may have been fired at embattled Ohio National Guardsmen that day in May 1970 before they killed four students and wounded at least nine others.
Fox News’ James Rosen reported for the Washington Times that a review of hundreds of previously unpublished investigative reports show that the demonstrations that enveloped the northeastern Ohio campus actually began three days earlier in downtown Kent.
Reacting to President Nixon’s expansion of U.S. military operations in Cambodia, a roving mob of antiwar activists, radicals and curious students and others smashed 50 banks and store windows, looted a jewelry store and hurled bricks and bottles at police.
The FBI’s investigation uncovered reliable evidence that appeared to contradict a review that concluded the unrest on the streets — the worst in Kent’s history — was “not an organized riot or planned protest.”
Among the strongest pieces of evidence was a pre-dawn conversation — never before reported — between two unnamed men overheard inside a campus lounge later that night. Their discussion was witnessed by the girlfriend of a Kent State student and conveyed up the FBI chain of command 15 days later.
“We did it,” one man exulted, according to the inquiry. “We got the riot started.”
