SAO PAULO: “Elite Squad 2,” a Brazilian movie mixing explosive action with political intrigue, has become Brazil”s top movie of all time, besting even the US blockbuster “Avatar” at the national box office, producers and industry specialists said.
The movie, a sequel to a 2007 original that also became a huge success, has taken 60.5 million dollars in Brazilian ticket sales since its premiere three months ago, topping the 60.4 million dollars “Avatar” pocketed over a similar period, the industry outlet Filme B said.
“The film has grabbed the title of the biggest box office hit in Brazilian cinema history, topping the blockbuster ”Avatar” by James Cameron,” the producers of the movie crowed on their website.
The launch of “Elite Squad 2″ in Brazil coincided with a spectacular real-life operation by the crack police squad of its title that swept brutal drug gangs out of a nest of slums in Rio de Janeiro.
It is to get its international showing next month at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.
The Kids Are All Right premiered in Rome
ROME: Julianne Moore rocked two hot red carpet looks in Rome at the premiere and photocall for her film ”The Kids Are All Right” during the 5th Rome International Film Festival on November 2, in Italy.
Moore, 49, wore a midnight blue one shoulder gown with a revealing cut out on midriff at the film”s premiere.
She accessorized with black platform heels, blue clutch and exotic jewelry: snake cuff in her right wrist and multiple rings on both her hands.
A sleek updo, smoky eyes, and coral lipstick rounded the freckled beauty”s looks.
Earlier in the day, Julianne rocked an untreated combo of fall colors – burnt orange pencil skirt and hot pink baggy top.
She accessorized with tough ankle cuff black heels and gold jewelry. Her gorgeous ginger hair, styled in vertical waves, draped her shoulders.
Moore, who turns 50 on December 3, received the Marc”aurelio Acting Award for her role in The Kids Are Alright.
The film, that also stars Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo was the talk of the Sundance Film Festival, and the winner of the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
Directed by Lisa Cholodenko, and follows Nic and Jules (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore pictured), a married couple who share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – or, when referred to jointly by Joni, “Moms” – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favour. He wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived by artificial insemination. Against her better judgment, Joni honours her brother”s request and manages to make contact with “bio-dad” Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur.
The kids find themselves drawn to the confirmed bachelor”s footloose style – especially in contrast to Nic, a principled doctor who has long established their house rules. Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul. As Paul comes into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined.

Charlyne Yi, Asian American performance artist, musician, writer, painter and actress, Charlyne Yi’s new movie “Paper Heart” will open in theaters on August 7.
Moviegoers may remember Yi from her brief but memorable appearance in director Judd Apatow’s hit comedy “Knocked Up.”
In “Paper Heart,” Yi stars along with Michael Cera and Jake Johnson. It was directed by Nick Jasenovec and produced by Sandra Murillo.
Yi executive produced in addition to co-writing the screenplay and stars as a fictionalized version of herself.
The “hybrid-documentary” follows her as she embarks on a quest across America to find “love.”
According to the filmmakers, as Yi and her good friend (and director) Nick search for answers and advice about love, she talks with friends and strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist?
But shortly after filming begins, Yi meets a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, her pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a fresh new urgency. Yi risks losing the person she finds closest to her heart.
The movie combines elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality and fantasy into a whimsical story that won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
