Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Benghazi in the early hours of Monday to celebrate, as rebels streamed into the heart of Tripoli.
Waving the Libyan s independent flag jubilant supporters gathered in one of the city s main square watching televised developments in Tripoli via giant screens.
Earlier, a convoy of rebels had entered a western neighbourhood of Tripoli. Rebels said the whole of the city was under their control except Gaddafi s Bab Al-Aziziyah stronghold.
Two of Gaddafi s sons were captured by the rebels, who were also reported to have seized the Libyan state radio building in the capital. Gaddafi s presidential guard units laid down their arms.
Remaining defiant, Gaddafi earlier had made two audio addresses over state television calling on Libyans to fight off the rebels.
But resistance to the rebels appeared to have largely faded away, allowing the rebels and their supporters to demonstrate in Green Square.
Televised images showed Libyans kneeling and kissing the ground of Tripoli in gratitude for what some called a “blessed day”.
After a six-month civil war, the fall of Tripoli came quickly, with a carefully orchestrated uprising launched on Saturday night to coincide with the advance of rebel troops on three fronts.

The founder of WikiLeaks has warned that his supporters are primed to publish a ‘deluge’ of leaked government documents should his activities be curtailed by any country; where as his lawyer Mark Stephens says that the organisation held further secret material which it regarded as a thermo-nuclear device to be released if it needs to protect itself.
Julian Assange has distributed to fellow hackers an encrypted ‘poison pill’ of damaging secrets, thought to include details on BP and Guantanamo Bay. He believes the file is his ‘insurance’ in case he is killed, arrested or the whistleblowing website is removed permanently from the internet. Mark Stephens said Mr Assange would certainly fight deportation to Sweden on the grounds that it could lead to him being handed over to the US, where senior politicians have called for him to be executed. He said that the WikiLeaks site which was last week forced to move to a Swiss host after being dumped by US internet companies had come under siege from a huge number of cyber-attacks. WikiLeaks has been in the eye of a media and diplomatic storm since it started leaking US diplomatic cables from a collection of some 250,000 it had obtained, embarrassing and infuriating Washington. Assange, a 39-year-old Australian, who is believed to be in Britain, broke cover on Friday to say in an online chat that he had boosted security after receiving death threats. WikiLeaks says 831 cables have been posted to its site so far. His lawyer Mark Stephens also warned that WikiLeaks had secret material in reserve, which he likened to a thermo-nuclear device, to be released if it needed to protect itself.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) declared the poll a “major success”, but disqualified another three people who won seats according to preliminary results and delayed certified results from one troubled

Dr Aafia sentenced 86 years of imprisonment
A US federal court in Manhattan has sentenced Pakistani neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui 86 years of imprisonment in 7 charges.
Aafia Siddiqui, 38, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by Judge Richard M. Berman, who said significant incarceration is appropriate. Don’t get angry, Siddiqui said in court to her supporters after the sentence was announced. Forgive Judge Berman. Berman responded, saying: I wish more defendants would feel the way that you do. Dr. Afia said that she didnt want any Muslims or Pakistanis to shed blood behind her name.
After the US courts decision, Dr. Aafias sister Fauzia Siddiqui said that Aafia movement would be launched soon and Dr. Aafia would be brought back to Pakistan. She said that Aafia was forced to admit that she was not tortured in the prison.
A jury convicted the Dr Aafia in February of trying to kill US agents and military officers after she was detained by police in Afghanistan in 2008. During Siddiquis three-week trial, FBI agents and US soldiers testified that when they went to interrogate Siddiqui, she snatched an unattended assault rifle and shot at them while yelling, ”Death to Americans”
Her conviction touched off protests in Pakistan. There were more protests as hundreds chanted ”Free Aafia” at a rally in Karachi, while others demonstrated outside the Manhattan courthouse.
Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik sent a letter on Saturday to the United States Attorney General calling for repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan.
