Susan Atkins died at the women’s prison in Chowchilla. She was 61 years old at the time of death. According to state corrections officials, Susan Atkins had been suffering from brain cancer. Earlier this month, Susan Atkins lost her last chance at parole. According to spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Terry Thornton, Atkins died on Thursday at 11:46 p.m. in Chowchilla at the Central California Women’s Facility. It was also reported that Atkins, the Charles Manson follower died of natural causes.
In the summer of 1969, Atkins was convicted of seven murders. Actress Sharon Tate was also among the seven victims. When Tate was murdered, she was 8 1/2 months pregnant. Her four friends were also killed by Susan Atkins. In 1972, the Supreme Court changed Atkins’ death sentence to life imprisonment. But in 1976, the death penalty was reinstated. During her time in prison, she was denied parole 13 times. Most recently on September 2, 2009. Her request for compassionate release was also rejected by the state parole board in July 2008. The authorities said.
