Romania hospital fire kills newborn babies

BUCHAREST: The fire, apparently caused by an electrical fault in the air conditioning system, swept through the Giulesti hospital in Bucharest.

Health Minister Attila Cseke described Monday’s fire as ‘one of the darkest tragedies in the history of the Romanian healthcare system’.

In all, eight babies sustained serious burns and were moved for treatment.

Health ministry official Raed Arafat announced the death of a fourth baby on Tuesday after three babies had died on Monday.

Dan George Enescu, head of the Bucharest children’s hospital, described the surviving babies’ condition as “extremely critical”.

“Those prematurely born babies have burns covering 70-80% of their bodies… It is too much for them. They are just five days old,” he said.

Transporters clash in Jhang, police arrest 16

JHANG: During an armed clash between two transporters of Jhang at Ayub Chowk, at least two persons have been injured, while police have arrested 16 persons from the scene, SAMAA reported on Wednesday.

According to details during a dispute over carrying passengers, firing and stone throwing started between groups of two local transport companies. Consequently, Ali Raza and another person sustained severe injuries.

After receiving information, the owner of one transport company and PML-Q leader Sheikh Waqas Akram’s brother, Sheikh Nawaz Akram reached the scene.

Heavy firing took place on the occasion and police arrested 16 persons including Sheikh Nawaz Akram and recovered all weapons from them. SAMAA

Flood sweeps through Amrijo-daro, enters Sehwan Sharif

DADU: Flood water has swept through the ancient Indus Valley city of Amrijo-daro located in Dadu District in Sindh, SAMAA reported on Thursday.

Amrijo-daro (pre-Harappa) is the site of a pre-Harappa fortified town which flourished from 3600 to 3300 BC.

Amrijo-daro Museum, which is believed to be more ancient than the famous city, Mohenjodaro, has been devastated by the deluge.

In addition, flood water has started causing damage to another historical city of Sehwan Sharif located in the Jamshoro District of Sindh.

In Jamshoro, several villages and surrounding kacha areas have come under water as thousands of people head to Kotri for safety.

It is being feared that the torrent could also affect Manjhand Tehsil of Jamshoro.

The flood continues to wreak havoc from Guddu Barrage to Sehwan Sharif.

There were no immediate reports of serious casualties or fatalities.

The fire was under control within 40 minutes, but almost three quarters of the homes gutted, said a witness at the scene.
