3b8d2ac31aoogle2 caffeineToday, we’re announcing the completion of a new web indexing system called Caffeine. Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our last index, and it’s the largest collection of web content we’ve offered. Whether it’s a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before.

Some background for those of you who don’t build search engines for a living like us: when you search Google, you’re not searching the live web. Instead you’re searching Google’s index of the web which, like the list in the back of a book, helps you pinpoint exactly the information you need. (Here’s a good explanation of how it all works.)7576e250e7ne 350 caffeine

So why did we build a new search indexing system? Content on the web is blossoming. It’s growing not just in size and numbers but with the advent of video, images, news and real-time updates, the average webpage is richer and more complex. In addition, people’s expectations for search are higher than they used to be. Searchers want to find the latest relevant content and publishers expect to be found the instant they publish.

To keep up with the evolution of the web and to meet rising user expectations, we’ve built Caffeine. The image below illustrates how our old indexing system worked compared to Caffeine:How Fast is Fast?

Prior to Caffeine, Google’s search index worked in batch processes. It’d sop up a site’s data and add it to the index. “While this system was continuous, all the documents in the batch had to wait until the whole batch was processed to be pushed live. Now, when Google crawls a page, it processes that page through the entire indexing pipeline and pushes it live nearly instantly,” Search Engine Land explained.

In terms of actual zoom, PCWorld conducted a side-by-side comparison test when Caffeine was still in development and found that results took 0.15 seconds on the regular Google search and 0.09 seconds on Caffeine. Since Caffeine is now live across all data centers, regions, and languages, it’s hard to gauge the increase in speed.

As probably the whole world knows by now that the iPhone 4 has been announced and their different features have been discussed by Steve Jobs on the WWDC. After knowing about the features of the new iPhone people are enthused to know about the date of release of the amazing gadget so that they could shut their eyes tight and clench their fists and jaws until the time of release, after which they would get their hands on the greatest cell phone yet.

Well according to Apple, the official date of preordering the phone is 15th June and the official release date when the phone would actually be shipped out is 24th June. The shipment would initially be to Germany, France, UK, US and Japan. 2dee68114875x297 iphone 4 release dateIt is also reported that 18 more countries would receive the iPhone 4 in July and by September 88 countries would have received it. So the very official date of release is 24th June (which makes the iPhone 4 a Cancerian!).
Perhaps one of the most wanted features is multitasking. iOS 4 makes it possible to multitask on your iPhone 3GS and above device. Unfortunately due to memory requirements the iPhone 3G is not compatible although a little tweaking (and jailbreaking) can see this feature enabled.

Multitasking works by tapping the home button a couple of times. Once done, a dock pops up showing running applications that can be scrolled through. You can then switch between apps and continue on what ever app from where you left off.

Apple announced the iPhone 4 today and introduced ten new features such as a slimmer body, HD video recording, and improved battery life. However, the iPhone is known for exploding smartphone gaming with hundreds of games from independent and big name developers to the point that Nintendo sees Apple as its main threat now. So, what did Apple add to the iPhone 4 for gaming? How about a 3-axis gyroscope to improve motion controls.

The new 3-axis gyroscope in combination with the existing accelerometer giives the iPhone six-axis mtion sensing (up/down, side to side, forward/backward, pitch/roll). Developers will be able to use the new gyroscope with the CoreMotion API to create games and applications for the smart phone. bc9fc5b17cgblack gyroscope
According to the information we received today, the phone will be released on June 24th in the U.S. other countries have not been mentioned so far.

The phone will have an enhanced image quality thanks to the Retinal display technology so the screen now displays 326 pixels per inch.
This announcement got a few hearty cheers apparently from the audience at WWDC, and as many iPhone app developers concentrate on the lucrative gaming segment, this isn’t too surprising. Some gaming applications that we can think of right off the bat include flight simulators, better augmented reality apps that take into account elevation/pitch changes, sport games (image iPhone 4 + Wii) and as Jobs demoed, games such as Jenga:

The game that immediately sticks out to me that would benefit the most from this extra degree of control would be a game like Zen Bound [$2.99 / Free], as I imagine manipulating the objects you wrap could be even easier with yet another degree of control. It’s not hard to think of other games that could be enhanced by the extremely precise motion tracking, especially if you’ve ever used a Wii Motion Plus and have seen just how much the addition of a gyroscope can improve how accurately a game can track your movement.

Like anything on the App Store, it’s up to developers to implement these new features. All we can do is wait and see what they come up with once they finally get the device in their hands.

02e8778b7eanding last comic standingLast Comic Standing’ – ‘L.A. Auditions’: Season 7 Premiere Recap S07E01) For stand-up comedians, NBC’s ‘Last Comic Standing’ has the same “easy road” stigma that singers feel ‘American Idol’ has. The show even took a year long break before coming back for its seventh season. Former winners have been as hit-or-miss as those on ‘Idol.’ Revamped once again (the show is on its fifth host and an all-new judging panel), ‘Last Comic’ is back.

The two-hour premiere focused entirely on auditions at The Improv in Los Angeles. The judging panel — with established comics Greg Giraldo, Natasha Leggero and Andy Kindler — weed through comedians, all aiming for a spot on that night’s showcase.

Giraldo, known for his cutting bits on Comedy Central’s Roasts, says he prefers comics who have “suffered a little” and “can put a spin on it.” Leggero, known for her ’snobby, rich girl’ stand-up persona, says she stresses material and point of view. (Full disclosure: I’ve met Leggero a couple of times. She’s very friendly and helpful — and she’s incredibly tiny in person.) Last is Kindler from ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ who proclaims you can’t teach stand-up comedy.

But now it’s time for the first auditioner: Maronzio Vance from North Carolina, who also auditioned during season 2. Vance has a pretty dry delivery on stage and looks off to the side a lot. It’s a totally different persona than off stage. I don’t particularly enjoy this brand of comedy but the judges love him — particularly Leggero, who even highlights his delivery.

As an aside, something that right away stands out as a flaw with ‘Last Comic’ is that the judging panel are all comedians as well who want to look as funny on TV as the contestants. It’s like if after someone auditioned with a song, the ‘Idol’ judges were all singers who then sang their responses, each trying to outdo each other vocally while also putting someone through to the next round. It’s overwhelming to watch.

After the announcement of the new Iphone 4G many people have been talking about the included gyroscope. This 3-axis gyroscope combined with the accelerometer can add a full 3D motion support, and as Steve Jobs notes, it is “perfect for gaming”.

On the other hand people are looking for the Iphone 4 release date.

According to the information we received today, the phone will be released on June 24th in the U.S. other countries have not been mentioned so far.

692a71bb72large new iphoneYou don’t need me to tell you that Apple will announce the new iPhone tomorrow – that’s a given. But what we never truly know is when the new iPhone will be available.

Historically, Apple has waited a few weeks. I’ve been thinking June 25 or 26.

Now I’m wondering if it might be sooner – a lot sooner.

That photo is a text that I received by dialing *NEW# (*639#) which lets you know if you are eligible for an upgrade. I checked last week like I always do around this time of year and it said I’d be eligible on June 20.

Now I’m eligible now. So that has me wondering if Steve Jobs will change things up after the announcement tomorrow and say the following exciting words: “The new iPhone is available now.”

In years past, we’ve gotten wind of the new iPhone and then AT&T drags its heels in announcing if and when current customers would get an upgrade. In fact, b6723561f9e 8155 new iphoneI was already drafting my email to AT&T to ask if and when we’d have the answer to that question. But now I don’t have to worry about it – I already have my answer.

Oh and by the way, AT&T – love the $18 upgrade fee. NOT. Do you really need to nickel and dime me now too? I’m already going to buy a new phone and sign a new contract. That said, you’d better honor the unlimited plan that you promised me I could keep.

So the summary here is mostly good all around … whether the new iPhone is available tomorrow or next week or June 25, it looks like AT&T is already ahead of the game as far as upgrades are concerned. That means you will just need to decide if this is the iPhone you want to upgrade to.

That said, I can tell you that I will be upgrading. I’ve had every model and I’ll have this one. Plus, iWife is looking forward to me passing on my current 3GS to her.The EVO was set up to automatically check Twitter and e-mail on Google’s Gmail service, but even with these options turned on, it was shocking that a fully-charged smart phone left with its screen off for about eight hours was already in the yellow-battery danger zone.

Other nasty surprises include a $10 fee on top of the regular smart-phone data plan for 4G service, a fee that applies no matter where you live, even if your town has no 4G wireless service.

(In Austin, I found the 4G service to be fast and reliable downtown, but a bit spotty when I trekked south of Austin and away from Interstate 35.)

Though the two-hour ceremony seemed like one big promotion for the return of Jersey Shore on July 29 (the cast of the MTV reality show appeared frequently in and around the Gibson Amphitheatre near Universal Studios in California, where the event was held), the show was still chock full of highlights that didn’t involve Snooki or The Situation.e18357702a060610 tom cruise mtv movie awards90″ height=”340″ /> Cruise gamely reprised his role as Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder in some side-splitting skits as the award show’s “producer” (“Sit back, relax, and enjoy my giant, two-hour s–t”). Ken Jeong (The Hangover) tearfully talked about his cancer-free wife while accepting the prize for the Best WTF Moment. Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen) dropped one too many F-bombs – some of which couldn’t be bleeped in time by the censors – when nabbing the Best Movie prize for New Moon. And making their (world!) premieres: the trailers for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Les Grossman was not done for the night,he had more surprises hidden under his hairy chest.
Grossman brought out Jennifer Lopez at the event and the duo worked it out very well to J.Lo’s 2005 song “Get Right”.
Katie Holmes and all of us watching were seriously impressed by the high energy, booty slapping performance.
Tom Cruise proved that he was a funny man but he also proved to be an even greater dancer at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, held at Universal Studios’ Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday (June 6) in Universal City, California.
Cruise opened the show in full costume dressed as “mega mogul” Les Grossman who is known for his dirty mouth. It was good to see a Tom Cruise who did not take himself too seriously. He did not even come off as a crazy Scientologist, probably because he did not do a lot of talking. Good job to Tom Cruise for showing us he still has a sense of humor, and he can thank Beyonce for lending credibility to Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman imitation.

599b3bc950on 111 evoHTC EVO 4G phone from Sprint
Sprint’s new HTC Evo 4G, its third device to run Google’s Android operating system, raises that theoretically absurd question.

The Evo — debuting June 4 for $299.99, before a $100 mail-in rebate, for new or renewing subscribers — stands apart from other smartphones even when it’s shut off. Its comparatively enormous display, 4.3 inches across, makes it a slab of a device, wider than any mobile phone I can remember using.

That sizable screen eases typing on its on-screen keyboard and reading Web pages, although without the trackball or touch-pad control found on most Android phones navigating and selecting text is more difficult. A thoughtful flip-out stand also lets you rest the phone on its side for tray-table movie viewing.

But in return, it looks as if it could double as a carrying case for more compact models, such as Verizon’s HTC Droid Incredible.

The Evo also aims to up the ante with its mobile broadband connection. It’s Sprint’s first phone to support its under-construction “4G” service, which the Overland Park, Kan.-based company touts as offering download speeds averaging from 3 billion to 6 billion bits per second (Mbps), compared with 3G downloads that typically go no faster than 1.4 Mbps. 5e857249ccrsonic evo
Couple this fee with the 4G and hotspot fee and the EVO was becoming quite an expensive device to own. The good thing is this fee wasn’t mandatory, it just unlocked access to those unnamed premium features.
Androidguys uncovered these features, now we all know what they are. As mentioned in an earlier post, video calls will be free. Even after you factor in the cost of this and 4G coverage, your plan would still be cheaper than those found on a few other carriers. For all you lucky people that got your hands on an EVO, you will have access to all these features for free until July 15th. If ownership of this awesome device wasn’t enough, Qik has just sweetened the pot (temporarily). The trade show industry as a whole has a history of being extremely wasteful (ever see a trade show floor at dismantle on what’s left behind to be thrown out?…you’d be surprised how many railroad cars leave a convention center with trash). Exhibit manufactures, service providers, show venues and exhibitors have increased their sustainable practices with some being pioneers, and others being forced to commit to sustainable practices. Adapting the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle model is starting to have a noticeable and positive effect on the show floor.

If your company is looking for a new trade show exhibit, or renting a trade show display, consider looking for a green exhibit. More and more exhibit houses are offering sustainable green exhibits, and some offer green trade show rentals for those that exhibit only 1-3 times per year, or would like to ”test drive” the booth prior to purchasing.

Choosing the right green exhibit will pay dividends for years to come as show standards and mandatory guidelines will become increasingly strict moving forward. Look for overall value with durable components, flexibility with graphics and accessories, scalability with different sizes, and unique cutting edge clean designs to make your company stand out on the show floor.Evo Exhibits is a full-service trade show exhibit company. eb48be260c725948 falcon 9The brand new commercial Falcon 9 rocket experienced an unexpected glitch just before liftoff during its first flight test Friday, stalling what was to be its maiden launch.

The Falcon 9 rocket, built by private company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), was slated to blast off at 1:30 p.m. EDT (1530 GMT) from its seaside launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. An unknown glitch caused the rocket to abort launch just before its planned liftoff.

“There still may be a chance to recycle the count and try again today,” SpaceX commentator Robyn Raguette said.

All systems initially appeared to function as designed, though the launch was delayed past an initial 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) target by a series of issues. A problem with the telemetry system, which enables the launch team to track the rocket from afar. SpaceX was able to resolve that issue by moving a strongback structure on the launch pad that was blocking the signal.spacex f9 rollout falcon 9
The system is made up of a series of small explosives that could be used to deliberately destroy the rocket if it careened out of control and threatened cities and towns surrounding Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Once the final approvals are given and related documentation is completed, the California-based company will be cleared to launch the Falcon 9 from Launch Complex 40 at the Air Force base.

SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion NASA contract to launch 15 Falcon 9 flights — three test flights and 12 missions to deliver cargo to the International Space Station. Contract options could increase the value of the deal to $3.1 billion.f3d336fb3c715bc2 falcon 9
