British daily alleges PK of training terrorists for attacks in the UK

Up to 20 Britons are undertaking terrorist training in Pakistan to launch attacks in Britain, a report said Thursday, citing intelligence sources.
Al-Qaeda and associated militant groups are training the young Muslims, who hold British passports, in Pakistan’s tribal areas, Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper said.
They are being trained to use firearms and explosives in order to carry out shooting sprees in Britain, intelligence sources are cited as saying in the daily paper.
We believe there are 15 to 20 Britons in the camps, a source in Islamabad told the Telegraph, on condition of anonymity.
The report came after it emerged that Western intelligence agencies had uncovered an Al-Qaeda plot by Pakistan-based militants to attack Britain, France and Germany, according to security sources and media reports.
Militants were planning simultaneous strikes in London and cities in France and Germany, in attacks similar to those in Mumbai two years ago, British and US media reported.

County player approached to fix matches: report

LONDON: A county cricketer in England claims he was approached by an Indian businessman seeking to fix the result of televised domestic one-day matches, according to a report on Wednesday.

The unnamed player was told he could name his price for giving information about the result of a match and that other county cricketers had accepted money from bookmakers, the Daily Telegraph reported.

English county one-day matches are often televised in India and it is thought that Asia is home to most of the illegal betting rings who provide funds for bribing players or officials.

The revelations come just weeks after Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria and Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield were arrested and bailed as a result of an investigation into alleged spot fixing – the practice of paying a player to perform a certain task such as bowling a number of wides.

The Professional Cricketers” Association (PCA) was told about this latest approach on Tuesday and will be contacting the International Cricket Council”s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

Ian Smith, the PCA legal director, told the Telegraph: “The PCA are determined to work with the ACU to develop a workable protocol that allows players to come forward with confidence.

“We recognise that it is for the good of the game that players fulfil their duty to report approaches. We are aware of the concerns players might have over these issues and we will work with ACU to address those.”

Putin nominated for ‘Event of the year’ Award

MOSCOW: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been nominated for a music award honouring his contributions to hip-hop and rap.

Muz TV, which is Russia”s answer to MTV, nominated Putin, 57, for its “Event of the Year” award for his bizarre appearance last November on the televised final of a rap “battle for respect”.

The nomination is something of a surprise, since at the time Putin looked awkward and stood motionless among a crowd of teenagers as they writhed to a noisy rap song.

At another point, as a hip-hop groove played in the background, Putin delivered a speech that mixed teenage street slang with observations on the hip hop scene – about which he apparently knew little.

Critics dismissed the move as a cynical ploy to boost his already stellar ratings but Putin denied that, saying he wanted to reach out to young people to warn them of the dangers of drugs and vodka.

“It would be impossible to perform so-called low risk break dancing and still less high risk break dancing while on drugs,” the Telegraph quoted him as telling his teenage audience, without apparent irony.

The awards ceremony will take place in Moscow later this month, though it is unclear whether Putin will attend or indeed win.

Google’s GDrive System May Render Personal Computer History

8edac63b09google Google’s GDrive System May Render Personal Computer HistorySearch engine giant Google will soon come up with a system that may make the personal computer virtually redundant, predict technology experts.

The GDrive system will merge Google’’s all existing web-based services to make them easier to use together.

Industry reports suggest that the ”GDrive” would enable users to store almost all their data on the Internet, and access it from wherever they are.

“Throw your hard drive away, Google’’s Gdrive is arriving in 2009,” the Telegraph quoted TG Daily, an American technology news website, as predicting.

The GDrive would make it possible to access and update information like emails, photographs, music, documents and spreadsheets from any device with an Internet connection.

The novel system is being described as ”cloud computing”, wherein the web rather than the hard drive is used as the place where information is stored.

Google experts are said to have begun convincing the world of its benefits.

The fact that such services are usually free could undermine the Microsoft business model, which was originally based on the ability to sell software packages with new machines.

It is believed that the GDrive could “cause a major paradigm shift in how we use computers and bring Google one step closer to dethroning Windows on your desktop”.

However, there are some who think that trusting Google with so much personal or commercial data is dangerous, for information may not be as safe in the cloud as it is in a computer.

Peter Brown, of the Free Software Foundation charity, said: “Does it matter to you that someone can see everything on your computer? Does it matter that Google can be subpoenaed at any time to hand over all your data to the American government?”

A Google spokesman refused to confirm whether the GDrive launch was imminent.

“We don”t comment on speculation, and we don”t pre-announce product launches.
