One dead, eight missing in search for S.Korea sailors

SEOUL: A sailor died and eight were missing Saturday after their fishing boat, which was helping search for missing sailors from a sunken warship, collided with a freighter, maritime police said.

The fishing vessel, with nine crew aboard, sank after sending a distress signal late Friday near South Korea”s western sea border with North Korea, after she was apparently hit by a Cambodian-registered ship.

The boat was one of 10 trawlers helping with the operation to get to 46 sailors officials say could still be alive in the sunken wreckage of the warship which went down on March 26 following a mystery explosion.

“We”ve captured the Taiyo 1, a Cambodian-registered 1,472-ton freighter, which was apparently involved in the collision,” an Incheon Maritime Police spokesman said.

South Korea”s navy, backed by the fishing boats and US military divers, were struggling against high waves and strong currents to explore the hull sections where many of the missing navy sailors could have been trapped.

The area has been crowded with ships and aircraft, which have been combing the area in a search and rescue operation.

But efforts to inspect the sunken wreckage of the warship have been hampered by cold weather and strong currents.

Navy authorities again had to call off a plan to send divers down to the wreckage on Saturday morning because of high waves, a Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman said.

Fifty-eight crewmen were saved soon after the sinking, but none since. Officials suspect most of the missing are in the rear section of the hull.

The disaster site is close to the disputed border which was the scene of deadly naval clashes between North and South Korea in 1999 and 2002 and of a firefight last November.

Former Australian first lady Sonia McMahon dies

SYDNEY: Lady Sonia McMahon, the glamorous widow of former prime minister Sir William McMahon and mother of Hollywood-based actor Julian, has died in Sydney, a hospital spokesman said Saturday.

McMahon, who created headlines in 1971 when she wore a daring white dress with splits up both sides to a White House dinner with Richard Nixon, had been suffering from cancer.

“Lady Sonia McMahon passed away late last night,” a spokesman for St Vincent”s Private Hospital said.

“She died peacefully with her family by her side.”

McMahon worked as an occupational therapist before she married her husband — who was 24 years her senior — in 1965.

During her husband”s term as prime minister she attended a White House dinner held in his honour wearing a floor length gown slit to the thigh and held together from there to under the arm by thin rhinestone-studded straps.

Asked about the incident later, she said: “Well, there are worse things I could be remembered for, I guess.”

“We used to go to continuous dinners and have to wear long dresses and I got so sick of all those ordinary sort of dresses that I thought, ”Oh, I can”t stand it any more”, and so this was a light relief.”

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd paid tribute to McMahon, describing her as a “distinguished representative of Australia”.

The 77-year-old had been a fixture on Sydney”s social circuit until hit by skin cancer and other ailments over the past 18 months.

She is survived by her three children — daughters Melinda and Deborah and actor son Julian, who played one of the lead roles on US television show “Nip/Tuck”.

William McMahon was prime minister from 1971 to 1972 and although he retained his seat in parliament until his retirement in 1982 he is remembered as one of the country”s least popular leaders. He died in 1988 aged 80.

Jewell would later be pronounced dead from his severe injuries to the head according to authorities.

Police are still reportedly seeking the suspects in the death — possible murder — of A.J. Jewell.
