Charme upset with rumours of her being dropped from Zilla Ghaziabad
The Southern Invasion has started all over again. After Vyjanthimala, Padmini, Hema Malini, Sridevi and Jaya Prada there was a lull of sorts as far as South Indian heroines in Bollywood went… until Asin. Her debut opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini was followed by stories of how arrogantly dismissive she was of most Hindi projects. Now with another blockbuster Ready to her credit, she is back in the reckoning…the first among several Southern heroines who are on their way.
The talented Trisha fell short of expectations in Priyadarshan’s Khatta Meetha. Maybe not her fault as she was completely miscast as a district collector trying to bring Akshay Kumar to task. Priya Mani in Raavan was noticed. But not enough to make a place next to her cousin Vidya Balan in Bollywood.
Kajal Aggarwal lately made her high-profile debut in Singham. But like many of the other Southern swapna sundaris, she has big banners and heroes backing her in Bollywood. Ditto Ileana D’Cruz who has bagged a plum assignment opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Anurag Basu’s Barfee.
Next in line is Tamil actress Tapasee, who makes her Hindi debut in David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor. Anushka Shetty from the Telugu blockbuster Arundhati, would have been seen opposite Ajay Devgn in Singham if she hadn’t been beaten to the role by Kajal Aggarwal.
Oh yes, these South Indian girls are fiercely competitive.
A strange story suggesting that Telugu actress Charme Kaur who made her debut ni Big B’s Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap was ousted from her second Hindi film Zilla Ghaziabad because her co-star Vivek Oberoi didn’t want to work with her, had the girl and Vivek fuming, he for yet another attempt to malign his name.
Says a source close to Vivek, “He has never interfered in the casting. Why should he do so now? He is in fact shooting with Charme in Phaltan outside Mumbai. And he is completely comfortable with her.”
So where did the stories of Charme’s rude expulsion from her second Hindi film come from? Apparently, the sabotage rumours were part of a whole new Southern wave of competition that has swept down on Bollywood.
Says a source, “Another Southern invasion has started. There’s a whole new brood of Southern glamour girls descending on Bollywood. Kajal Aggarwal, Ileana D’Cruz, Taapsee, Anushka Shetty…These are all glamour girls from the South who are all set to find a place in Mumbai. I wouldn’t like to say much about their ambitions except that they are fiercely competitive and know they’re fighting for the same roles with the same A-lister heroes.”
Apparently, the rumour that Vivek was unwilling to work with Charme was started by one of the new lot of South Indian glam-dolls looking to leap into a pan-India attention with a big Hindi blockbuster.
Confirms the film’s producer Vinod Bachchan, “Charme is here shooting with Vivek in Phaltan. She was recommended to me by Sonu Sood who worked with her in Bbuddah and found her very spontaneous and professional. We don’t know who started the rumour that Charme was out of our movie. She plays Vivek’s girlfriend and later his wife.”
Charme seems pretty annoyed by these attempts to shorten her screen life even before it’s started. “It was all a fabrication. I was always doing the part. Now that we’re shooting, trust me we’re having a great time on location. Vivek, Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawalji and the whole crew is so sweet.”
Regarding the new Southern invasion, Charme shoots, “I’m not here because the other girls from the South are here. I am here because I want to be here. There is a difference between the Tamil-Telugu actresses and me. I am a Punjabi girl from Mumbai.”
‘Munni’ Malaika shoots Zandu Balm commercial with Suriya and NTR Junior
Malaika Arora Khan made the whole nation swoon to her beats with ‘Munni Badnaam‘ earlier this year, so much so that it even boosted the sales of Zandu Balm. The actress in fact was even roped in by the makers of Zandu Balm for a special promotional campaign.
Malaika recently shot for the Zandu Balm commercial in 3 different languages namely Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. While the Hindi commercial features only Malaika, in the Tamil one, she would be seen alongside South superstar Suriya and in the Telugu one alongside NTR Junior.
Apparently, all the three commercials have been shot atop a train a-la ‘Chaiyyan Chaiyyan’ and have been choreographed by Prabhudeva.
Sonakshi to star with Salman in Kick remake to be directed by Shirish Kunder
Just a day before the release of his first film with Sonakshi Sinha, Salman Khan has signed another film with the much talked-about debutante.
On Thursday afternoon, producer Sajid Nadiadwala drove down to the Sinhas’ bungalow to sign Sonakshi opposite Salman in the Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster Kick which Shirish Kunder will be directing for Nadiadwala.
Salman was not only keen to sign Kunder as director, he strongly recommended Sonakshi for the female lead which Ileana had performed in the Telugu original.
Confirming the news, Sajid Nadiadwala says, “It was Salman who was very keen that I sign Sonakshi opposite him in Kick remake. I became a hundred percent sure of her after I saw her in Dabangg. She and Salman make a great pair. I am very happy to be working with Shatruji’s daughter. He has worked extensively for my banner. In fact I’ve a picture at home with Shatruji when he was shooting for our banner in Bhai Ho To Aisa. I was 6 at that time.”
Says Sajid emotionally, “This is the first time I’ve gone to someone’s house to sign an actor. Everyone comes to my office. But Sonakshi is Shatrughan Sinhaji’s daughter.”
Adds Shatughan Sinha, “I told Sonakshi that I’ve worked with Sajid’s grandfather and father. Now it’s her turn to continue the tradition. God willing my sons too will work with Sajid.”
The remake Kick-starts this winter.
Incidentally, this is Sonakshi’s third film with Salman. She is already doing the sequel to Dabangg with the star.
RGV to produce The Businessman starring Surya
Ram Gopal Varma has put his proposed Amitabh Bachchan starrer Bhudda: Don’t F…K With Him directed by Telugu cinema’s most successful director Puri Jagannath, on the back burner.
Instead Varma and Puri are getting together to produce and direct Surya in The Businessman. Says Puri Jagaanath, “It’s the story of a gangster’s journey from Chennai to Mumbai in three languages Hindi Tamil and Telugu.” Puri has written the screenplay on his own.
Strangely none of the three individuals helming the project is conversant with Hindi.
Jagannath who is the highest-paid director of the South with an enviable track-record of Telugu blockbusters admits there is a linguistic problem in creating The Businessman in Hindi. “I agree, I don’t know the language. Neither does Ramu nor Surya. But I don’t think that would be a problem.”
Ram Gopal Varma who will produce the film is far more forthright, “I’d have you know that Murugadoss who made Ghajini and Prabhu Deva who directed Wanted didn’t even know the Hindi alphabet and couldn’t speak a word of Hindi. I think we’ll manage quite well.”
The Businessman will start shooting in September. Jagannath who’s a cult name in Telugu cinema is relocating to Mumbai to be able to acclimatize himself with Bollywood.Says the softspoken Telugu director, “Many years ago, I tried to crack the Hindi market with a film Shart starring Tusshar Kapoor. That was a disaster. So I see The Businessman as my true beginning in Bollywood.”

Asin to star opposite Salman Khan in Ready
It’s confirmed. Asin it is, as Salman Khan’s leading lady in Anees Bazmee’s remake of the Telugu hit Ready.
And it was never Deepika Padukone, as reported in a section of the press. “Asin plays the lead. I wonder where Deepika’s name came from!,” says director Bazmee currently preparing for a month-long shooting of his new film Thank You in Canada.
Anees also denies the story that Salman asked him to sign Asin. “The role requires a ‘chulbuli’, vivacious, talkative and agile girl. Asin was the natural choice.”
Asin had played a similar role in Ghajini. That’s the role that convinced Anees that Asin was the right choice for Ready.
In fact Genelia D’Souza, the first choice for all ‘chulbuli’ vivacious-girl parts, was working with Anees Bazmee in yet another remake Its My Life (original Telugu film Bommarillu). Genelia was Anees natural choice.
Having failed to play something different in London Dreams, Asin is back to doing the Ghajini act again viva la vivacious!
