3c170571c1layoff.jpg Texas Rangers Baseball Playoff ScheduleTexas Rangers Baseball Playoff Schedule: The Rangers acquired Cliff Lee to bolster their starting rotation, and to add a legitimate ace for the playoffs. It would appear that the trade accomplished exactly that. Cliff Lee was dominant in yesterday’s 5-1 win over Tampa Bay. Facing the third best offense in baseball, Lee surrendered only one run over seven innings while striking out ten. Given Lee’s past success in the post-season, it’s tough to be surprised by this outcome.

Pitching Match-Up: C.J. Wilson will try to duplicate Lee’s results as he squares off against James Shields. After spending his career coming out of the bullpen, Wilson was a revelation as a starter. Playing in a very hitter friendly ballpark, C.J. went 15-8 with a 3.35 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 204 innings.

By mixing a low 90′s heater with a terrific slider and sick cutter, Wilson has been baffling hitters all season. James Shields is a different story. The velocity has been up on Shields fastball, but the pitch has been wildly ineffective. Despite throwing a nice change-up, Shields finished the season with a 13-15 record and a disheartening 5.18 ERA. Truthfully, it’s surprising to see the veteran Shields get the start over the more effective Matt Garza, but I typically trust Joe Maddon.

miami shark Miami Hurricanes baseball coach Jim Morris has heard the story repeatedly. But he still can hardly believe it.

It’s the tale of how the father of UM star third baseman Harold Martinez swam 10 hours on his back, covered with motor oil to keep him warm and clear of sharks, from Southeast Cuba to Guantanamo Bay to make a better life for his wife — a former competitive synchronized swimmer — and then 1-year-old son, Harold.

“Wow!” Morris said. “I’m scared to put my foot in the ocean. I’m afraid a shark might bite me.

“Harold says, `I was supposed to be a water person, not a baseball player.’ ”

The Canes are glad he chose land. As No. 1 seed Miami (40-17) prepares to meet No. 4 Dartmouth (26-17) at 4 p.m. Friday in the Coral Gables Regional, Martinez is tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference home run lead with 19 — more than anyone in the four-team tournament.

Only a sophomore, he is 11th in school history in home runs in a single season, and needs six more to tie the UM record set by Phil Lane in 1982. He leads the team with 60 RBI and ranks second to ACC Player of the Year Yasmani Grandal in slugging percentage (.601) and total bases (131).

“That would be amazing, when you think of all the great players who have come through here,” Martinez, 20, said when asked how significant it would be should he tie or break the record. “Hopefully it happens, because if it [it does] it means I’ll be bringing a lot of runs in — and hopefully our team will be winning.”

A former shortstop at Miami Braddock High, Martinez, 6-3 and 202 pounds, was moved to third base last year. Though he leads the team in errors with 17 at a position described in baseball as “the hot corner,” his fielding was flawless at the ACC tournament, where he was named to the all-tournament team. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round out of high school, Martinez should be UM’s top major-league prospect next season.

“People can have deceiving numbers in baseball,” said UM freshman Michael Broad. “But Harold’s 19 home runs have included a lot of big home runs. When he hits a bomb it’s a momentum-changer.”

Rangers put Cruz on 15-day DL with hamstring problem
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have placed right-fielder Nelson Cruz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

The Rangers made the move Tuesday, a day after Cruz aggravated the injury while racing home from third base on a wild pitch in the fifth inning of an 8-6 loss to Detroit.

Cruz has been bothered by the sore hamstring for a week. He left games early three times last week, missed a start in another game and was relegated to DH duty once. He was replaced by David Murphy in the sixth inning Monday night.

Cruz is hitting .328 this season with seven home runs and 17 RBIs.

Ron Washington, the manager of the Texas Rangers, tested positive for b00693b0a8ington Ron Washingtoncocaine in 2009, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman. “I did make a mistake and I regret that I did it. I am really embarrassed and I am really sorry … Any attempt to try to explain it is going to sound like excuses. There is no right way to explain something wrong, and I did wrong. Was it tension? Maybe. Anxiety?” The Rangers knew about the positive test, then decided not to fire him. Washington’s star outfielder, Josh Hamilton, is a recovering drug addict.
