SARDINA: The death toll from a train wreck in eastern India blamed on Maoist saboteurs rose to 90 on Saturday, with rescuers saying more bodies remained trapped in the mangled carriages.

“So far, 90 bodies have been recovered,” West Bengal police inspector general Surajit Kar Purakayastha told foreign news agency. “But that”s going to rise as two of the carriages that crashed into the freight train are yet to be fully searched,” he said.

More than 30 hours after the Mumbai-bound high-speed passenger train careened off the tracks in a remote part of West Bengal, emergency teams were still trying to cut their way into crushed compartments.

The precise cause of the derailment was still unclear, with Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee saying Maoists had blown up the track with explosives, while police pointed to evidence that a section of rail had been manually removed.

NEW DELHI: At least 65 people were killed when an express train packed with sleeping passengers was derailed early Friday by suspected Maoist rebels in eastern India, a senior police official told foreign news agency.

The bodies of the passengers were removed from the mangled remains of the ill-fated coaches of the Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express and the injured taken out with the help of gas cutters, a south eastern railway spokesman said.

“65 bodies have been recovered. The toll could go up,” West Bengal home secretary Samar Ghosh said.

The incident occurred at 1:30 am when the train was running between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations, about 135 km from Jhargram, south eastern railway officials said.

In Kolkata, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surojit Karpurokayastha said that according to preliminary investigation, fish plates were found removed at the derailment site.

Five of the 13 derailed coaches fell on an adjacent track and were hit by a goods train coming from the opposite direction, reports said.
