KARACHI: Polling has begun for by-election in PS-94 in Organi Town amid tight security measures.

Some 1,022 rangers and 2,015 police personnel have been deployed in the constituency, where 12 polling stations were declared highly sensitive.

Rangers officials on Saturday said that terrorists could disturb by-elections at PS-94 with suicide attack/s and firing. Everyone is ready for the elections in the constituency where people will cast their votes in a critical situation tomorrow (Sunday).

Sachal Rangers Commandant Brigadier Waseem Ayub along with DIG West Zone Sultan Khwaja said during a press conference on Saturday that there is a threat of a suicide attack and firing during the by-polls. Therefore, he added, Article 144 has been imposed in the area.

Afghan president heads to Washington

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai left for Washington Sunday on a four-day visit, his office said, aiming to mend ties after a damaging row over his criticism of foreign partners.

Karzai will meet President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates. He is accompanied by more than a dozen government ministers, his office said in a statement.

The visit is Karzai”s first since he made a string of outspoken criticisms alleging that foreign nations had orchestrated fraud in the elections that returned him to power last year, comments that infuriated Washington.

Case against Shoaib Malik still on

NEW DELHI: India’s police said the case against Pakistani cricket star Shoaib Malik has not yet been withdrawn by the family of Ayesha Siddiqui; accordingly, the police will pursue it as it is, Geo News reported Thursday.

The police official investigating the case told an Indian newspaper that the procedure to end the case would a prolonged one, adding police have not yet received any request from Ayesha Siddqiui or her family to take back the complaint against Malik.

Police Commissioner AK Khan said he directed the officials that the case be dealt with in accordance with law.

The charges of cheating and injustice to a married woman were leveled against Malik.

Cricket star Jayasuriya stands in Sri Lanka elections

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, who is a candidate in Thursday”s parliamentary polls, voted a day early so that he could play in a tournament in India, election officials said.

Jayasuriya, who is running for President Mahinda Rajapakse”s United People”s Freedom Alliance in the southern district of Matara, was granted special permission to cast his vote on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old batsman, the oldest man still playing international cricket, retired from Test matches in 2007 but has continued his career in shorter forms of the game.

He has been included in Sri Lanka”s squad for the World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean from April 30-May 16.

Sri Lanka”s 1996 World Cup winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga is also a candidate in the elections, representing the opposition Democratic National Alliance. He entered politics after retiring from cricket.

Rangers, scouts deployed sensitive areas of Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT-BALTISTAN Pakistan news: The rangers along with Northern area scouts will be deployed at the sensitive polling stations for November 12 elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, said Chief Election Commissioner for Gilgit-Baltistan Rahim Nawaz Durrani Monday.

Durrani said that polling will start from 8:00 am and will continue till 4:00 pm. While talking to press conference in Gilgit, he said that 95 candidates of 10 political parties are participating in the elections for 23 constituencies. Besides this, 168 independent candidates are also participating in the elections. The election campaign will end tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 12:00 am.

KABUL, Afghanistan: Karzai Challenger Drops Out of Election, Abdullah  says rival will not participate in elections Nov. 7 presidential runoff after his demand for change in the electoral commission were not met.

Abdullah denounced the commission of fraud in the first round of voting Aug. 20 and told supporters Sunday that he offered demands to ensure a fair vote this time.

But he said his proposals were rejected, so “I shall not participate in the elections on November 7.”

He said that a transparent election, it was not possible.

Abdullah said it is asking its supporters to boycott the runoff.
