Peru’s Vargas Llosa wins Nobel for literature

STOCKHOLM: Peruvian-born writer and one-time presidential candidate Mario Vargas Llosa, who has chronicled struggles for power, won the 2010 Nobel prize for literature, the awarding committee said on Thursday.
The committee said in a statement Vargas Llosa received the award “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat”.
Vargas Llosa, who made his international breakthrough with the novel “The Time of the Hero” in 1966, is the first Latin American winner for literature since Octavio Paz won in 1990.
His works build on his experiences of life in Peru in the late 1940s and the 1950s. Vargos Llosa ran for president of Peru in 1990 but lost to Alberto Fujimori, who ultimately had to flee the country and was subsequently convicted of various crimes.

Founded in 1932, the police department serves the entire island of O’ahu, covering over 600 square miles (1,600 km²) of territory, with just over 900,000 residents(not including military members) and over four million annual visitors. The island is divided into 8 patrol districts which are then subdivided into sectors and beats. The HPD currently has more than 2,500 employees, 2,134 of which are full-time sworn officers. A 2003 Department of Justice report listed The HPD as the 21st largest police department in the nation.
Unlike the other 49 states, Hawai’i does not have a state police agency or individual city agencies; law enforcement is the jurisdiction of the individual county governments. The HPD is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA)
