Greg McDermott Accepts Offer At Creighton; Holy Hell, Iowa State, You Are A Mess
With longtime Creighton mainstay Dana Altman bolting for the greener pastures of Oregon (and all of their Nike money), the next coaching domino appears set to fall: Rivals reports that Iowa State coach Greg McDermott has agreed to replace Altman at Creighton. McDermott will reportedly receive a 10-year deal worth $9 million.
While leaving for Creighton may seem like a backwards move for McDermott, at this point, with things going in the wrong direction in Ames, it certainly makes a fair amount of sense to leave before likely being let go in a season or two, as the Des Moines Register explained. McDermott has struggled fielding competitive teams at Iowa State since coming aboard four seasons ago, due in large part to a series of player suspensions and transfers that have left the program in perpetual rebuilding mode. At Creighton, McDermott will be returning to the Missouri Valley Conference, which he obviously knows well, after navigating Northern Iowa to three NCAA tourney appearances in five seasons there before he had left for Iowa State.

Two lawmakers say violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard must be called in to help.
State Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford made a public plea to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday to deploy troops.
The request comes amid a recent surge in violent crime, including a night last week that saw seven people killed and 18 wounded, mostly by gunfire.
Fritchey says Chicago has had 113 homicide victims this year. He says the police department has done a commendable job, but its resources are stretched thin.
Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis says he appreciates the lawmakers’ frustration and willingness to help, but doubts the National Guard is the best answer.
A message left for Quinn wasn’t returned

Stupak Amendment,Stupak: Where are we on the abortion standoff?
Stupak Amendment,Stupak:Where are we on the abortion standoff? Still fighting, from all reports. Politico reports that leadership has twisted arms in the vast majority of the caucus which is pro-choice, and Stupak won’t be the poison pill.Asked whether her allies in the pro-choice movement would support the bill with the language offered yesterday by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), Speaker Nancy Pelosi offered a one-word answer: “Yes.”
“I don’t believe any of us believe we can hold up what we’ve been fighting for … and that’s health care,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.).
But the lawmakers said they would work hard to whip the Stupak amendment in hopes of keeping it out of the final bill, and several said they weren’t ready to declare how they would vote if Stupak’s language made it in.
“We’re nor conceding that,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) said “pro-choice members are not happy this morning..
