Tooth regeneration gel could replace painful fillings
Dentists could soon hang up their drills. A new peptide, embedded in a soft gel or a thin, flexible film and placed next to a cavity, encourages cells inside teeth to regenerate in about a month, according to a new study in the journal ACS Nano. This technology is the first of its kind.
The new gel or thin film could eliminate the need to fill painful cavities or drill deep into the root canal of an infected tooth.
Its not like toothpaste, which prevent cavities, said Nadia Benkirane-Jessel, a scientist at the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale and a co-author of a recent paper. Here we are really trying to control cavities (after they develop).
Drilling teeth and filling them is safe and effective. Dentists fill millions of cavities each year across the United States. However, though dentists numb the tooth, many patients still rue the sound of that drill. The new research could make a trip to the dentists office more pleasant, said Berkirane-Jessel. Instead of a drill, a quick dab of gel or a thin film against an infected tooth could heal teeth from within.
Cavities are bacteria and pus-filled holes on or in teeth which can lead to discomfort, pain and even tooth loss. When people eat acidic foods, consume sugary snacks or simply dont maintain proper oral hygiene, bacteria begin to eat away at the protective enamel and other minerals inside teeth. The causes of cavities are varied. But for most cavities, the treatment is the same: drilling into a tooth, removing the decay and filling in the hole to prevent further damage.The gel or thin film contains a peptide known as MSH, or melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Previous experiments, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that MSH encourages bone regeneration.Bone and teeth are fairly similar, so the French scientists reasoned that if the MSH were applied to teeth, it should help healing as well.To test their theory, the French scientists applied either a film or gel, both of which contained MSH, to cavity-filled mice teeth. After about one month, the cavities had disappeared, said Benkirane-Jessel.Benkirane-Jessel cautions that the MSH-containing films or gels only treat cavities; they dont prevent them. People will still need to brush, floss and use mouthwash to help prevent cavities from forming in the first place.Treating cavities without drilling would have its advantages, said Hom-Lay Wang, a dentist at the University of Michigan. Cavities and drilling can destroy the nerves and blood vessels inside a tooth, making it more brittle and likely to fracture. Regenerating a tooth could help avoid crowns after a cavity has been filled.That said, regenerating a tooth from within would only be useful in a relatively small number of cases. Most cavities would still need to be drilled and filled.In the meantime, patients cant slacken their oral hygiene either. Numerous clinical trials over several years will have to be completed before the MSH-containing gels or films are available to treat cavities in humans.
Respiratory infections caused by childhood obesity
A virus which causes respiratory infections has been linked to childhood obesity, in a study that is likely to reignite a controversial debate.
Previous animal research has implicated common viruses in weight gain, but the evidence has been disputed. The latest study, in Pediatrics, found that obese children with antibodies specific to a certain virus weighed 35lbs (15.8kg) more than those without.
Nothing has yet been proven on this theory, say UK experts. Previous research has shown that chicken or mice injected with similar types of viruses showed a statistically significant weight gain. A link between the AD36 virus (adenovirus 36) and obesity in human adults has also been written about previously. But how AD36 infects people and why it affects people differently is still not known.

There are times when Brothers & Sisters is so melodramatic, it’s hard to take seriously. There are times, though, like Sunday, when that melodrama leaves one near tears.
As Rebecca and Justin ran toward the scene of the car crash, we knew what they’d find there – Robert, unresponsive. But it didn’t lessen the emotional devastation one bit.
Robert’s (Rob Lowe) health is in danger on the season finale of ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters,” at 10 p.m. on WCVB (Ch. 5). Considering that Lowe is leaving the series, this does not bode well.

Libya rules out terrorism in plane crash

TRIPOLI: Libya”s Transport Minister Mohammed Ali Zidan ruled out terrorism as the cause of a plane crash at Tripoli airport on Wednesday that officials said killed more than 100 people.
“We have definitely ruled out the theory that the crash was the result of an act of terrorism,” Zidan told a media conference. He said that while the nationalities of the victims of the flight from South Africa that was reportedly due to fly on for London”s Gatwick airport had yet to be assessed, “I can say that there are Libyans, Africans and Europeans.”No official death toll has been given but Afriqiyah Airways listed 93 passengers and 11 crew members on board its flight 8U771 from Johannesburg, which crashed on landing at Tripoli airport.
A security official said all those on board were killed but an airport official later said an eight-year-old Dutch boy had miraculously survived and had been rushed to hospital.

Nadal, Djokovic on the cusp of second Monte Carlo showdown
MONTE CARLO: Rafael Nadal survived a minor rain break before resuming his storied clay-court dominance with a 6-4, 6-2 quarter-final defeat of fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday.
Top seed Novak Djokovic moved nearer to a repeat of the final he lost to the Spaniard here a year ago with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Argentine David Nalbandian, a player on the way back to success after hip surgery last May.
“I have to represent the rest of the world,” joked Djokovic, the only non-Spaniard remaining in the last four. “It”s a great responsibility.
“You know how well they did on the clay last season, so it”s no surprise to find them again in the semis. They are the specialists of this surface.
“Ninety percent of their courts are clay and they are in top condition, Nadal, (Fernando) Verdasco and the rest are the perfect example of how to play on clay.”
Djokovic will test his theory as he bids for another final at the event, facing sixth seed Verdasco who needed to pull out of a second-set swoon after losing a 5-1 lead. The Spaniard finally ending the hopes of Alberto Montanes 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-0 in two hours.
“When I got to match point and I started to take risks,” admitted Verdasco.
“I lost confidence and suddenly he was back in it. But I recovered in the third set and played solid.”
Second-seeded Nadal has now won 30 consecutive matches on the clay of the seaside Country Club, his last loss at the event coming in 2003.
The four-time Roland Garros winner, in search of his first ATP title since last May, will face another countryman Saturday against 11th seed David Ferrer, who put out German Philip Kohlschreiber 7-5, 7-6 (7/1).
“To get to the semi-finals is a very good start to the clay season,” said Nadal. “I did well.
“I played a complete match today and I served much better, the best in three days. That”s very important.”
This year”s event turned into an Iberian play-day, with Spaniards accounting for five of eight spots heading into the quarters.
That marked a first at the Master 1000 level during the post-1968 Open era.
The last time Spain sent five men to the last eight was at home in Valencia two years ago.
Nadal improved his record on clay against the man who proceeded him as a major clay-court force to 5-1, last losing to 30-year-old former number one Ferrero in their last meeting in the Rome second round two years ago.
Nadal improved to 19-4 on clay this season as he hopes for a confidence boost after claiming the last five trophys in the principality.
This period is crucial for the world number three as Nadal tries to regain his customary confidence with massive ranking point totals to defend after sweeping to clay titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome in three consecutive weeks in 2009.
The match was interrupted for 50 minutes in the opening set by light rain, with Nadal looking displeased to be forced from his workplace by the weather.
Out again, he got straight back to work, setting up the opening set with a break for 5-4 and starting the second with a break which paced the way to victory.
“I lost a little bit of concentration with the weather interruption, that”s the only part of the match that I”m not happy with,” said the Spaniard.
Ferrero made a late stand, saving two match points in the penultimate game before Nadal concluded with a service winner after 95 minutes.
“With the wind, it was very difficult to be aggressive,” said Ferrero. “But I tried. After an hour, I felt a bit more tired and I couldn”t push all the time that I was doing at the beginning.
“I had to be very aggressive with my forehand if I wanted to win the match, try to move him a lot to get him a little bit tired – I didn”t do it.”
Ferrero came to the event a strong contender after lifting the title in 2002 and 2003 and winning back-to-back clay titles in February in the Americas.
The veteran lost only his second match this season on clay against 17 wins.

AYUTTHAYA: A Thai Beauty contest held Sunday gave women with a little more meat on their bones the chance to strut their stuff and compete for the title of Miss Jumbo Queen.
The annual pageant aims to raise awareness and money for Thailand’s suffering elephant population. Women weighing 176 pounds and over strut their stuff for judges in beauty and talent competitions – fully representing the theory that “bigger is beautiful.”
“I want to show people that just because I’m fat doesn’t mean I’m any less beautiful or talented,” said 18-year-old winner, Tarnrarin Chansawang, who weighed in at 242 pounds.
This year, 24 women participated in the contest at the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo, 38 miles west of the capital Bangkok.
As winner of the Miss Jumbo Queen crown, Tarnrarin took home several prizes, including a jumbo trophy and $50,000 baht ($1,270).
In keeping with Jumbo tradition, a side award for Miss Jumbo Universe went to university student Thanchanok Mekkeaw for weighing in as the heaviest competitor in the pageant at 400 pounds.

Addressing the first annual convention of the Islamic seminaries under the auspices of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the Home Minister said: “A nation can ignore its minorities only at your own risk … We must always remember that pluralism is our heritage and strength. It was the duty of the majority to protect the minority. Because the acts of a few, we have allowed to become diversity differences. ”
“The UPA Govt is committed to protecting the rights of all minorities and are denied the right of indigenous minorities worldwide. That’s why we oppose the injustice being done to the Tamils in Sri Lanka and condemn violent assault against our students in Australia, “he said.
Chidambaram, who today became the first Chief Minister to have addressed at a meeting in Deoband, said: “I take this opportunity to reach all sectors of our society. It’s part of my duty as Minister of Interior to communicate with including the efforts being undertaken by the government towards building a just, humane, progressive and civilized society. ”
The interior minister, while extending warm wishes of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and UPA president Sonia Gandhi praised the role of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JuH) in building the nation and country in the fight for freedom.
“We all know that was one of the leading Muslim organizations, which opposed the tyrannical rule of the British Empire and the theory of the two countries aimed at splitting the nation. Since then he has worked greatly to the independence of the rise of Muslim residing in India. ”
Praising the teachings of Islam, denouncing all violence, Chidambaram said: “We can not see Islam as a faith of others, because it is the land of their ancestors, this is the land of his birth. Is a matter of pride that Islam exists in India along with other great religions. ”
Stressing that pluralism should be the basis of our strength, the interior minister condemned the communalism and urged Muslim leaders to help build a modern nation and promote the concept of a civil society.
