Golf: Fernandez-Castano leads in Doha
Spain s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano overcame a desert storm to grab the lead away from American John Daly on the opening day of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters in Doha.
Daly s return to form – he is 543rd in the world – with a five-under-par 67 looked an unreachable target for the later starters as conditions worsened.
But Fernandez-Castano, on course for a Ryder Cup debut later this year, birdied four of the last five holes for a brilliant 66.
The 31-year-old from Madrid, wearing sunglasses to limit the amount of sand blowing in his eyes, had a remarkable nine birdies during his round, but also bogeys on the fourth, long 10th and 13th.
Three months after walking out of the Australian Open saying he had run out of balls – several of them had just been hit into a lake – 45-year-old Daly surprised even himself with five birdies and no dropped shots.
“It s one of the best rounds I ve ever played in a wind like that,” said the American. “You feel like you are eating a lot of sand – it was brutal. I m pretty shocked myself. I had five-and-a-half weeks off and really didn t touch a club much.”
Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal was another to reach five under, but then came four bogeys in the last seven holes for a 71.
Korean KJ Choi tucked in just behind with a 68, while Scot Paul Lawrie – another ex-Open champion, of course – England s Richard Finch, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Swede Peter Hanson were one further back.
World number four Martin Kaymer, who missed the cut in his defence of the Abu Dhabi Championship last week, shot one under along with Lee Westwood, one better than Sergio Garcia.
Graeme McDowell had to settle for a 73 and defending champion Thomas Bjorn needed a par on the last just to break 80.
Woods hits 6-under to share lead in Abu Dhabi
Tiger Woods took a share of the lead at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship on Saturday by “staying away from trouble” with a 6-under 66.
“It just seemed like I didn t do a lot of things right but I didn t do a lot of things wrong today, it was just very consistent,”
Woods said. “You know, made a couple putts here and there … I stayed away from trouble and tried to keep the ball towards the fat side of some of these pins and I think I did a pretty good job.”
The 14-time major winner finished at 11-under and a three-day total of 205. Woods is tied with newcomer Robert Rock, who birdied his final two holes to earn the 117th-ranked Englishman a first-ever pairing with the American on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy (68), Peter Hanson (64), Francesco Molinari (66) and Peter Lawrie (68) share third at 9-under. Four more players, including overnight leader Thorbjorn Olesen (71) of Denmark, are a shot further back.
Woods, who was two shots back after the second round, started climbing up the leaderboard Saturday with an opening birdie, followed by another on No. 7. He stepped up his game on the back nine, running off four birdies in a bogey-free round that was memorable not for stunning shots but Woods ability to sink clutch putts and keep his ball in play.
The former top-ranked golfer grabbed a share of the lead after he just missed eagle putt on 10 and settled for a birdie. He briefly took the outright lead with a birdie on 14 and rolled in a six-footer for birdie on 18. The crowd roared with every birdie but Woods held off from his trademark fist pumping.
“There s too many guys up there right now. There s a ton of guys with a chance to win,” Woods said. “You know, we have not separated ourselves from the field. The field is very bunched. I need to go out there and put together a solid round of golf, and I can t go out there and shoot even par and expect to win. I ve got to go out there and go get it.”
Rock, who got his first European Tour win last year in Italy in a playoff with Sergio Garcia, admitted he was star-struck at the prospect of facing off against Woods, calling him “the best guy I ve ever seen play golf.”
Schwarzenegger, Shriver divorce could be a costly one

Oprah Winfrey has held the top spot for the last four years but now she sits in second place behind Lady Gaga despite that Oprah’s earnings are still three times higher than Gaga’s. But Gaga is currently the most followed person on Twitter, this combined with her 32 million Facebook followers helped her knock Oprah from the top spot.
“Lady Gaga tops our power list not just because of her $90m (£56m) in earnings but also because of her 32m Facebook fans and 10m Twitter followers,” a spokesman for the magazine tells Metro.

Tiger Woods vows to make strong comeback
After a tumultuous year that included a sex scandal, divorce and a shortened, winless season on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods said Tuesday that he’s continuing to improve his game and his life.
As a golfer I learned so much more this year than any other year, and as a person infinitely more, Woods said after practicing for the Chevron World Challenge, an 18-player tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks that benefits Woods’ charities.
So it’s been a very successful year even though it was a very painful year as well, said Woods, 34, a winner of 14 major championships who’s made major changes to his golf swing to help him win again.
Woods has won the Chevron World Challenge four times but has missed the tournament the last two years. He was recovering from knee surgery in 2008, and last year he withdrew because the event came only days after his Thanksgiving night car accident in Florida that set in motion his sensational sex scandal.Woods also lost golf’s No. 1 ranking — a position he held for more than five consecutive years — last month when Lee Westwood of England took the top spot.

MELBOURNE: Tiger Woods provided some fireworks over his closing holes to shoot his best round of the week, a six-under-par 65, at the Australian Masters on Sunday.
The 34-year-old American, who had entered the final round 10 shots behind leader Adam Bland, went into the Victoria Golf Club clubhouse just three back of the Australian, who was one over for the day after 11 holes for a total of 10-under-par.
Bland’s playing partner Daniel Gaunt and fellow Australian Stuart Appleby were tied for second at eight under.
Woods, who was reportedly paid a $3 million appearance fee, produced some excitement down the stretch, highlighted by an eagle two at the par-four 15th, a birdie on the par-five 17th and an eagle three on the par-five 18th to finish on seven-under 277.

Tiger Woods and Swedish model wife Elin Nordegren divorced on Monday, their marriage irretrievably broken by a blistering sex scandal that has left the world number one golfers life in disarray.
