North Waziristan: 5 killed and 4 injured in a drone attack

In North Waziristan, during last 24 hours, 5 persons have been killed and 4 injured in the third drone attack.
The US drone targeted a house in the area of Ismael Khel, located in Datta Khel, a border area of North Waziristan, and fired two missiles. This drone attack took place at 6 am today and suspected house was the main target.

Gilani, Erdogan hold meeting, discuss bilateral ties

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan held a meeting and discussed issues related to bilateral relations.

The meeting between the two took place at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Both leaders exchanged views about the regional security situation, rehabilitation of flood-hit areas and Pak-Turkey ties.

The visiting premier is also scheduled to make a visit to flood-ravaged areas along with Prime Minister Gilani today. SAMAA

Girls’ primary school blown up in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Suspected militants blew up a government-run girls primary school on the outskirts of Peshawar late Sunday night, police said.

According to police, the explosion took place near the outer wall of the school in Lundi Arbab area, partially damaging the school’s building and some nearby houses.

The militants had planted explosives along the school’s wall.

However, no causalities were reported. SAMAA

New method of judges appointment seems impracticable

ISLAMABAD: Justice Jawwad S Khawja said the new procedure for appointing the judges seemed impracticable, Geo News reported Wednesday.

Justice Javed Iqbal said the method is inchoate and may spawn a massive crisis and stands in conflict with the Charter of Democracy (CoD) as well.

The apex court’s 17-judge larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry heard today various constitutional petitions against Eighteenth Amendment with particular reference to the formation of judicial commission.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry said exclusion of words on freedom of minorities from Objective Resolution, was not a clerical mistake; instead, these words were wittingly abolished.

He added however the Parliament has done a good job by incorporating these words again in the Constitution.

Today Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq continued his arguments before the bench.

During the course of proceedings, the CJ addressed the AG, ‘We don’t know to which extent, Objective Resolution or Article-2A can be invoked for the independence of judiciary.’

He sought the AG to take an overview of the Constitution to ascertain the article to lend strength, independence and through protection to the judiciary.

Justice Tassaddduq Jilani also remarked that it is imperative to be honest to history.

Firing hurts four in Karachi

KARACHI: Four persons were injured when firing occurred near Empress Market Saddar, Geo News reported Wednesday.

The firing incident took place when a procession of Yaum Ali (RA) was passing off Empress Market in Saddar.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

The incident was followed by aerial firing by unknown men from an old building in Saddar market.

CCPO Wasim Ahmed said that police and Rangers have surrounded the building and trying to carry out a search by entering into it.

Flood-hit economy may see 0 to 2 pct growth

KARACHI: The worst floods in decades could knock down Pakistan’s economic growth for fiscal 2010/11 to between zero and two percent, Pakistani officials said on Monday, fuelling concern about the country’s stability.

The Asian Development Bank, assessing flood damage and Pakistan’s needs along with the World Bank, said last week economic growth could be three percent. The finance ministry said the country would miss this year’s 4.5 gross domestic product growth target, but did not give another figure.

Sakib Sherani, a senior adviser to the finance ministry, said there was a whole range of growth estimates which would be revised once the actual impact of the floods became clear.

“We think zero percent is the lower bound of these estimates,” Sherani told Reuters, adding that this was his own estimate, and not an official figure from the finance

Wana suicide blast kills 26, hurts several

WANA: At least 26 people have been killed and several others wounded when a suicide explosion took place in a mosque in Wana, the headquarter of North Waziristan.

Former Member of National Assembly, Maulana Noor Mohammad has been killed in the blast.

The law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area soon after the explosion. SAMAA

Body to investigate charges against Punjab law minister

LAHORE: Punjab”s Chief Minister in a meeting with Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Sunday decided to constitute a committee to probe into Rana Sanaullah”s alleged links with banned outfits.

The decision came after talks between Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif and leaders of the SIC at the shrine of Data Darbar in Lahore.

Earlier, he rejected the demand about immediate removal of Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. However, both the sides later agreed to set up a committee for holding an inquiry on the issue.

Sahibzada Fazal Kareem maintained that the SIC would not give up its demand for the removal of provincial law minister.

10 Pak pilgrims die in Saudia

JEDDAH: At least ten Pakistani pilgrims including five men and equally women lost their lives as their bus met an accident while heading to holy city of Makkah-tul-Mukarramah from sacred city Madina-tul-Munawwarah on Saturday night, Geo news reported.

According to Saudi media reports, the accident took place in South of Jeddah city near Al-Ghareeda locality.

More than 30 Pakistani pilgrims were onboard when road mishap happened, sources said.

Scores others also sustained injuries who were immediately admitted to hospital for medical attainment, hospital sources confirmed to media.
