Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Zenani Mandela age 13 was tragically killed in a car crash on her return home from a concert in Soweto.

News Rely.com reported that the Nelson Mandela Foundation released a statement of the sad news for the Mandela family also saying that Mr. Nelson Mandela would not be in attendance Friday June 11th 2010 at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony as planned. Mr. Nelson Mandela is 91 and has been in poor health but had originally planned on making a rare appearance before the fatal car crash.

The former President of South Africa and his family are extremely ‘tore up’ by the loss of Zenani Mandela.

The South African City Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson stated that the driver of the car killing Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter has been arrested and charged with drunken-driving.
“The Metro police found that he was drunk,” Mamonyane said. “He lost control of the vehicle and it collided with a barricade.”

Police spokesman Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, who earlier said the driver would appear in court for a preliminary hearing Friday, said that had been postponed for further investigations, and that the driver was not being held. Mariemuthoo said that was not unusual.

“It’s a decision of the prosecutor,” he said.

The Mandela foundation denied reports that the former president’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was in the car, but said she was treated in a hospital for shock after being told of the fatal accident. She was discharged after a few hours.
Zenani, who celebrated her 13th birthday on June 9, is one of nine grandchildren Mandela. The foundation said in a statement, “The family have requested their privacy to grieve over this tragedy.”
