Gaddafi family fled to Algeria

The Algerian foreign ministry said Gaddafi s wife, daughter, two of his sons and their children entered the neighboring country on Monday. It did not say whether Gaddafi himself was with the family.
It said the U.N. secretary-general and Security Council and the head of Libyan rebel National Transition Council were informed.
The report came as battles raged on two sides of Sirte, the southern city that is the headquarters of Gaddafi s tribe and his regime s last major bastion. The rebels were consolidating control of Tripoli, the capital.
Despite effectively ending his rule, the rebels have yet to find Gaddafi or his family members — something that has cast a pall of lingering uncertainty over the opposition s victory.
The Egyptian news agency MENA, quoting unidentified rebel fighters, had reported from Tripoli over the weekend that six armored Mercedes sedans, possibly carrying Gaddafi s sons or other top regime figures, had crossed the border at the southwestern Libyan town of Ghadamis into Algeria. Algeria s Foreign Ministry had denied that report.
Ahmed Jibril, an aide to rebel National Transitional Council head Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, said if the report of Ghaddafi relatives in Algeria is true, “we will demand that Algerian authorities hand them over to Libya to be tried before Libyan courts.”
Ahmed Bani, military spokesman of the council, said he was not surprised to hear Algeria had welcomed Gaddafi relatives. Throughout the six-month Libyan uprising, rebels have accused Algeria of providing Gaddafi with mercenaries to curb the revolution.
No undermining US economic strength, says Biden
He told a Chinese audience that his government would never default, near the end of a trip that has stressed interdependence between the world s two biggest economies.
“You re safe,” Biden told a university in Sichuan, the southwest province that is the second and last stop of his visit to China, in answer to a question about Washington s ability to repay its debt. “Please understand that no one cares more about this than we do, since Americans own 87 percent of all financial assets and 69 percent of all treasury bonds, while China owns 1 percent of financial assets and 8 percent of treasury bills, respectively,” Biden said at Sichuan University in the provincial capital, Chengdu.
“So our interest is not just to protect Chinese investment. We have an overarching interest in protecting the investment, while the United States has never defaulted and never will default.” Biden used his speech to renew US calls for Beijing to do more to rein in North Korea and Iran, whose nuclear ambitions have alarmed the West.
But his key theme was, as it has been throughout his five-day visit to China, economic: that the United States can reverse its high debt and low growth, and that China should play a part by buying more American-made goods and services. “I also know that some of you are sceptical about America s future prospects. With that in view, I would like to suggest that I respectfully disagree with that view and will allay your concerns,” said Biden. He told the audience to remember that “America today is by far the largest economy, with a GDP of almost $15 trillion, about two and a half times as large as China s.
“Biden and President Barack Obama, both Democrats, face re-election next year. Biden said the debate with Republicans over how to tackle US fiscal problems would be at the heart of the 2012 presidential election. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is virtually certain to succeed Hu Jintao as Chinese President in early 2013, has been Biden s host for this visit, and Obama administration officials have said they want to build trust with the emerging leader ahead of the transition.
18th Amendment indicative of people’s wishes: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said that the 18th Constitutional Amendment is indicative of the wishes of the people of country, which now needs to be translated into reality at the earliest.
As required under clause 9 of Article 270 AA, he said, the Government has set up an Implementation Commission under Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, to consider and recommend steps in this regard.
The Prime Minister was chairing a meeting to review the implementation status of 18th Amendment with focus on functions and responsibilities to be devolved to the provinces. The meeting was held here at PM”s House.
The Prime Minister said that the Implementation Commission has been empowered to make rules or pass such directions, order or require the making of amendments to regulations etc., which may be necessary to achieve the objectives of clause 8 of Article 270 (AA)of the Constitution.
He reiterated that the Federal Government would extend full cooperation and support to the Implementation Commission which has already done a commendable job in identifying the areas and steps required to be taken to move forward.
The Prime Minister directed that Ministries and Departments whose responsibilities are to be devolved should sift out the matters/issues to be referred to the Council of Common Interest (CCI). He further said that on any major policy formulation,if any by these Ministries/Organizations, be discussed with the Implementation Commission and referred to the CCI.
The assets and the funds of the Ministries and Divisions to be devolved be properly handled and no action in this regard be taken without consultation with the Implementation Commission, he said.
Expressing the confidence that the Commission would work for completing the task of devolution in time i.e.30th June, 2011, the Prime Minister said the land mark 18th Constitutional Amendment was passed unanimously with the support of all the political parties in the Parliament and expressed confidence the same spirit would bedemonstrated in the implementation of the Amendments.
He said that as the concurrent list has been deleted, the provinces would now enjoy greater autonomy in managing their resources.
Mentioning the NFC Award, the Prime Minister noted that the Provincial Government”s share in the divisible pool has already been increased with the transfer of certain business of the Federal Government to the Provincial Governments through abolishment of the concurrent list.
The Prime Minister said that Provinces must work for strengthening their administrative machinery, which would be assuming higher role in the near future. Serious and concerted efforts, he said, are required both from the Federation and the Provinces to complete the transition in a smooth manner.
He said that certain laws, rules and regulations may require changes due to this transition, it is, therefore, expected that the Provincial Governments would work closely with the Implementation Commission. He asked the Chief Ministers to ensure that the transition takes place swiftly and within given timeframe.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the Commission would give a roadmap along with definite time-lines for implementation of the task given to it keeping in view the sensitivities involved. He said that the Parliament will be constantly updated on the status of the implementation after every two months.
The Chairman of the Implementation Commission of 18thAmendment Senator Mian Raza Rabbani while briefing the meeting informed that the Commission has already held three detailed meetings on May 25, 28 and June 8, during which the areas of focus have been identified.
He further apprised that the Inter-Provincial Coordination Division of the Federal Government, which acts as the Secretariat for Inter Provincial matters, has been designated as Secretariat of the CCI and the Implementation Commission also.
He said that this would facilitate in handling all these connected matters in a coordinated manner. He said that Secretaries of the Ministries/Divisions proposed for devolution along with Secretary, IPC Division Secretaries of the main coordinating agencies i.e. Cabinet, Establishment, Finance and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Divisions will closely liaison with the Implementation Commission.
The Chairman of the Implementation Commission informed the meeting that rules and procedures of the Implementation Commission as well as for CCI have been prepared and sent to the Law Division for vetting before submission to the Prime Minister and CCI for approval.
The role of CCI, he added, will be increased manifold during the process of implementation of 18th amendment and would be required to meet once every month till July 2011.
All the Chief Ministers appreciated the work done by the Implementation Commission on 18th Amendment under Senator Mian Raza Rabbani and assured every possible cooperation for timely completion of the implementation process.
They informed that as per the directive, the provincial governments had set up the provincial implementation cells and completed the necessary homework.
All the Chief Ministers unanimously opined that the NFC had not catered for the additional responsibilities being bestowed upon the provinces through devolution under the 18th Amendment and therefore the funds and assets of the Ministries and Divisions to be devolved may also be transferred to the provinces.
The meeting was also attended by all the Members of the Implementation Commission of the Parliament, Secretary Cabinet Division, Secretary Establishment Division, as well as the Chief Secretaries of the four provinces. The Inter Provincial Coordination Division was represented by the Acting Secretary.

The coolest Mercury we’ll never get to see?
That would certainly be the planned Mercury version of the next Ford Focus. Speculation has been — and we tend to believe it — that it would have revived the name Mercury Tracer. It would have been the first small Mercury in many years.
ALSO ON DRIVE ON:See our gallery of your Mercurys and of vintage Mercurys.
Ford executives told Lincoln Mercury dealers in February that they will be getting a new small car, an offshoot of the next Ford Focus. In 2009, Ford showed off the Lincoln Concept C at the Detroit auto show — and yesterday confirmed that it will go on sale. That is the Concept C in the photo above. We suspect that a variant of the C would have become that new Merc.n the fourth quarter of 2010, Ford will end production of Mercury vehicles to fully devote its financial, product development, production
and marketing, sales and service resources toward further growing its core Ford brand while enhancing Lincoln. Existing Mercury owners will receive continued access to parts and service support at Ford and Lincoln dealers. Current Mercury warranties and Extended Service Plans will be honored. There will also be special offers available on new Mercury vehicles through the summer. Affected dealers to receive specialized support during the transition as the company continues its transformation to a more profitable dealer network.

Anchors aren’t known for admitting their shortcomings but Campbell Brown is accepting defeat.
The eponymous host of CNN’s “Campbell Brown” has stepped down from the “toughest timeslot in cable news” due to low ratings.
“Simply put, the ratings for my program are not where I would like them to be,” Brown said in a statement released Tuesday. “It is largely for this reason that I am stepping down as anchor of CNN’s ‘Campbell Brown.’ ”
Brown added that she had been ruminating over the move “for some time” and that she felt the urge to reveal the truth behind her departure.
“I have never had much tolerance for others’ spin, so I can’t imagine trying to stomach my own,” she said. “The simple fact is that not enough people want to watch my program, and I owe it to myself and to CNN to get out of the way so that CNN can try something else.”
Brown’s news program aired at 8 p.m. on CNN opposite Fox’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” HLN’s “Nancy Grace” and MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” While Brown praised the “incredible talents” of her 8 p.m. cable news competitors, she also revealed she didn’t feel she was in the same league as these pundits.
“Shedding my own journalistic skin to try to inhabit the kind of persona that might co-exist in that line up is simply impossible for me,” she said. “It is not who I am or who I want to be; nor is it who CNN asked me to be at any point.”
CNN President Jon Klein revealed in a statement that the network would be announcing programming plans in the next few weeks.
According to The Washington Examiner, Eliot Spitzer is being considered as host of a new debate show like “Crossfire.” But the New York Gov. has denied these claims.
Meanwhile, Brown says she plans to help CNN through the transition

Ricky Sapp was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of this year’s draft. He’s very quick and athletic but you can see in the following video that he has his knee wrapped up tight.
I think the knee injury which he sustained a year ago is the reason that Sapp was still on the board in the fifth round.

After the Patriots selected him in the fourth round with the 113th overall pick on Saturday, the Connecticut native reflected on the opportunity to play for the team he rooted for as a kid. Hernandez had a Drew Bledsoe jersey as a kid, and remembers going to his first game at Foxboro Stadium.
“I just remember getting that first Patriots jersey and wearing his jersey all around my house. And then they had [Curtis] Martin at running back, and I just fell in love with the Patriots ever since then,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez is a 6-foot-2, 250-pound tight end who led Florida in receptions last year with 68 catches for 850 yards and five touchdowns last season with the Gators. (For his collegiate career, Hernandez had 111 catches for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns.)
Hernandez is the second tight end taken by the Patriots in this draft — New England took Arizona’s Rob Gronkowski with one of their three second-round selections. The two will get to work with veteran Alge Crumpler, who was signed earlier in the offseason.
“I was hanging out with [Gronkowski] a little at the combine. He’s a cool kid,” Hernandez said of his new teammate. “We have a good relationship, too. He’s a cool kid. We chatted a little bit, laughed together at the combine. I’m looking forward to playing tight end with him.”
In addition, he’s the third Florida Gator to be taken this weekend by the Patriots — Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham were selected in the second round by New England. The opportunity to have two other college teammates alongside in his rookie year will undoubtedly ease the transition to the next level.
3 US Troops killed in Afghanistan: NATO

KABUL: Three U.S. service members were killed Monday in fighting in southern Afghanistan, underscoring the unrelenting violence in the Taliban heartland as the Obama administration steps up efforts to rout the insurgents.
NATO said the Americans were killed in an engagement with enemy forces but gave no more details.
The deaths raised to at least 10 the number of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to a tally.
Officials said earlier Monday that bombs killed another American service member and two Afghan road construction workers in separate attacks Sunday in southern Afghanistan.
The southern half of the country has frequently been hit by attacks as the U.S. military builds up its presence in the area. Most of the 30,000 additional American troops that President Barack Obama has ordered to Afghanistan will be deployed there.
A vehicle carrying the road crew hit a roadside bomb Sunday in the Nawa district in Helmand province, according to the Interior Ministry. It said two workers were killed, and two were wounded.
The attack occurred a day after a British correspondent and a U.S. Marine were killed by a roadside bomb in the same area.
Sunday Mirror journalist Rupert Hamer, 39, was the first British journalist killed in the conflict.
Hamer and photographer Philip Coburn, 43, were accompanying a U.S. Marine patrol Saturday when their vehicle was hit by a makeshift bomb near the village of Nawa, the British Defense Ministry said. Coburn was seriously wounded.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday expressed condolences to Hamer’s family as well as to the British media. Karzai said he appreciated the “brave journalists” who risk their lives in Helmand.
Obama has said U.S. troops will start withdrawing from Afghanistan in July 2011, and American and Afghan officials already are preparing for the transition.
The Afghan government has announced plans to take over the U.S.-run prison at the Bagram air base. No date has been set for the handover, but officials have said it could occur by the end of the year.
