U.S. issues travel alert after bin Laden killing
WASHINGTON: The U.S. State Department on Sunday warned Americans worldwide of “enhanced potential for anti-American violence” following the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
“Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations,” the State Department said in a statement.

As many as 73 Hujjaj (pilgrims) have been deplaned from a private company aircraft for providing wrong details in the travel documents and for trying to leave sans Mehram (male companion), Dunya News reported on Tuesday.
As per Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA), the deplaned pilgrims included 36 women and 37 men belonging to Karachi.
The Hujjaj were supposed to land in Saudi Arabia via Bahrain in Gulf Airline flight. The authorities said that around 20 people of those disembarked have not even issued boarding pass.
Mohsin defends team selection without coach’s input
Pakistan cricket chief selector Mohsin Hasan Khan said that it was not mandatory to consult the coach and the caption on the selection of the squad.
Let me clarify that it is not written down in the PCB constitution that the coach and captain(s) must have a say in the selection of any squad, he told the website PakPassion.net.
My selection committee and I were asked by the PCB management to select squads for the series against South Africa, so we did that. We were asked by the PCB management to select a squad at short notice, because of the logistics of the series in the UAE and the travel arrangements of the team had to be sorted out very quickly, he added.
Both limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi and coach Waqar Younis have complained that their inputs on team composition weren’t taken. The board announced a 15-man squad to take on South Africa last week, but didn’t initially name a captain. A day later, Misbah-ul-Haq was appointed Test captain and Afridi was retained as leader of the side for the shorter formats.
US to warn Americans to be vigilant in Europe

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration will warn U.S. citizens to be vigilant as they travel in Europe, providing updated guidance prompted by al-Qaida threats, American and European officials told The Associated Press on Saturday.
Such a move could have negative implications for European tourism, business and diplomacy if travelers fear there’s a possibility of terror attacks.
The State Department will issue a “travel alert” for Europe on Sunday morning that advises Americans to stay vigilant on the continent because of threat information, senior U.S. officials told the AP. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because a final decision has not been announced.
“This travel alert is a cumulative result of information we have received over an extended period,” one senior administration official said. “We are constantly monitoring a range of threat streams
US Implores Americans not to Visit NKorea
US Implores Americans not to Visit NKorea , The State Department on Friday urged Americans to respect its warning against traveling to North Korea, saying in a cheeky Twitter message that there are not too many former U.S. presidents left available for rescue missions.
In a Tweet posted shortly after former President Jimmy Carter arrived in Boston from North Korea with American Aijalon Gomes who had been detained in the communist country for seven months, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said: “Americans should heed our travel warning and avoid North Korea. We only have a handful of former presidents.”
His message referred to the fact that Carter was the second former U.S. president to travel to North Korea in the past year to win the release of American citizens imprisoned there. Last August, former President Bill Clinton secured the release of two television reporters who had been arrested for illegally entering North Korea.
Carter’s trip means that the only living former presidents not to have rescued Americans imprisoned in North Korea are George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush.
Immediately after Carter flew out of the North Korean capital of Pyongyang with Gomes late Thursday, the State Department renewed its long-standing warning for Americans not to visit the country.
“Travel by U.S. citizens to North Korea is not routine, and U.S. citizens crossing into North Korea without proper documentation, even accidentally, have been subject to arrest and long-term detention,” the warning said in bold letters.
Gomes who entered North Korea illegally in January was convicted and sentenced to a hefty fine and eight years of hard labor. The U.S. had appealed for his release on humanitarian grounds for months before Carter’s visit.
Crowley said that although the U.S. appreciated the resolution of the Gomes’ case, it was still concerned about North Korea’s “broader behavior,” a reference to its nuclear weapons program and belligerent attitude and actions toward South Korea.
Eight foreign medical workers killed in Afghanistan

KABUL: Eight foreign medical workers, including “several” Americans, were killed by gunmen in Afghanistan”s remote northeast, police and officials said on Saturday, with the attack claimed by the Taliban.
A Christian aid group said it appeared those killed were members of one of its mobile eye clinics which had been travelling in northeastern Nuristan province and was headed back for Kabul after providing eye care for local Afghans.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killings and accused the medical workers of proselytising Christianity.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, said from an undisclosed location that bibles translated into Dari had been found with the foreigners.
Dirk Frans, executive director of the International Assistance Mission (IAM), said it had been told the bodies of eight foreigners — five men and three women — and two Afghans had been recovered.
“This actually sounds very similar to our Nuristan eye camp team,” Frans said, adding that IAM had last had contact with the team”s leader on Wednesday.
“This means it might have happened on Thursday,” he said.
Frans said the 12-member team had consisted of 6 US nationals, one British national, a German and four Afghans. Two Afghan staff members had escaped alive, he said.
Afghan police officials had earlier said six Germans were among the dead. US officials in Kabul said it appeared Americans were involved.
“We have reason to believe that several American citizens are among the deceased. We cannot confirm any details at this point,” US Embassy spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.
Violence in Afghanistan is at its worst since US-led and Afghan armed groups overthrew the Taliban in 2001. June was the bloodiest month for foreign forces in Afghanistan since then, with more than 100 killed.
Hundreds of Afghan civilians have also been killed this year as they become caught up in the crossfire.
“WE WARNED THEM”
Aqa Noor Kentuz, the police chief for Badakshan province, said the “bullet-riddled” bodies were found early on Saturday.
Kentuz said the foreigners had identified themselves as doctors, but some early reports said they were tourists.
He said they had been camping near jungle on a tour of Nuristan and neighbouring Badakshan when they were attacked.
Travel documents were found near their bodies, he said.
“Before their travel we warned them not to tour near jungles in Nuristan but they said they were doctors and no one was going to hurt them,” Kentuz said.
Jamaluddin Badr, governor of nearby Nuristan province, also said the group was made up of doctors who had visited several districts in Nuristan and Badakshan, helping local Afghans.
The IAM describes itself as an “international charitable, non-profit, Christian organisation” which has been helping Afghans with health and economic development since 1966.
“At this stage we do not have many details but our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who are presumed killed,” it said in an earlier statement issued on its website (www.iam-afghanistan.org/).
“This tragedy negatively impacts our ability to continue serving the Afghan people … We hope it will not stop our work that benefits over a quarter of a million Afghans each year.”
A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin said it was checking reports through its embassy in Kabul and could not comment until more information became available.
The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan said it had no involvement in the incident and had no information.
Despite a record number of foreign forces in Afghanistan, standing at some 140,000 backed by tens of thousands of Afghan forces, the Taliban have extended their campaign out of traditional power bases in the south and east into the north and elsewhere in recent years.

The driver Neal Parker, 58, ran through a net at the end of a track and died of head injuries after crashing at a “high rate of speed” during a qualifying round at the N.H.R.A. SuperNationals at Raceway Park in Old Bridge, N.J., the state police said. Parker was entered in the Top Alcohol Funny Car competition Parker was entered in the Top Alcohol Funny Car competition. The crash occurred shortly before noon.
“Parker … crashed Friday at a high rate of speed in the shutdown area during qualifying,” the NHRA said in a statement on its website. “On behalf of everyone at NHRA and Raceway Park, we are deeply saddened and want to
pass along our sincere condolences to the entire Parker family.”
NHRA officials and New Jersey state police are investigating.
The car ran through a containment area with soft barriers, sand and a safety net and wound up in pieces in front of a wall at the edge of the raceway property. State police declined to comment on whether the car hit the wall or on eyewitness accounts that a drogue chute designed to slow the car failed to deploy properly.
Spectator David Farrah of Manalapan said it appeared the chute malfunctioned.
“It looked like the chute just didn’t open and he couldn’t stop,” Farrah said. “The car was just crushed. It was tragic.”
Another spectator, George Tompkins, 63, of Metuchen, said he left the stands shortly before the crash. He didn’t see the wreck, but said he heard it.
Netherlands amends terror alert over Word Cup threat

THE HAGUE: The Netherlands said Thursday it had received intelligence reports of “a threat against Dutch interests in South Africa” and amended its terror alert for travel to the World Cup host nation.
“We received information from our intelligence services of a threat against Dutch interests in South Africa,” during the World Cup, foreign ministry spokesman Ozlem Canel told a foreign news agency.
The decision followed the arrest of an Al-Qaeda suspect earlier this month in Iraq who was accused of planning an attack during the football World Cup which kicks off in South Africa next month.
“We were informed of the man who was arrested in Iraq, and of what he said,” she added, referring to the 30-year-old Saudi national and Al-Qaeda militant.
The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism (NCTB) and the General (non-military) Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) furthermore informed the government “that there were no concrete plans for an attack,” said Canel.
The ministry nevertheless decided, in consultation with the two bodies, to change the travel advice for South Africa “as a result of this information”, she said.
“There was a general travel advice before, for certain cities where the Dutch team would be playing, certain neighbourhoods that should be avoided. Now we are telling our citizens to be extra vigilant in the whole of South Africa.”
