Flood victims” resentment hurting aid effort: ICRC

GENEVA: Growing resentment among Pakistan flood victims on the pace of aid delivery is hampering the relief effort, the international Red Cross warned Thursday, saying it had to halt two distributions recently due to unrest.

“What we are detecting is a very worrying trend of areas where … people are so in need, so resentful of not getting enough aid, that they turn understandably aggressive and this is bad because it doesn”t help in our efforts to reach more of them,” said Jacques de Maio, the head of operations for South Asia for the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He pointed out that in two instances in the past eight days, officials had to stop distribution of relief items “because of unrest.”

“We are worried because if this trend extends, propagates,” it could hinder the aid effort, he noted.

De Maio noted that the trend is particularly worrying because, unlike other disasters such as an earthquake, the floods are generating more and more victims as the high waters sweep into new regions.

“The thing is that due to the sheer magnitude of this and the fact that we are not in for a sprint, we”re here for a marathon, we need to make sure that (such unrest) does not become the rule rather than the exception,” he said.

De Maio also pointed out that certain elements were also not helping by agitating the crowd.

“If you organise a distribution for 30,000 and in the last 48 hours you have an additional 150,000, then you have a problem, particularly if you have people in the crowd, behind the crowd saying that ”anyway they”re useless, anyway they are politicised”,” he said.

“By doing so, the choice is the usual dilemma, are we ready to have our friends, our staff being killed and looted there? Because instead of helping 150,000 people we can only help 30,000?”

“Our angle is that we want first to help this 30,000 and see how we can extend what we do,” said de Maio.

The unprecedented floods have engulfed an area the size of England, affecting more than 18 million people, including eight million who are dependent on aid handouts to survive.

The scale of the disaster is so large that a month after the deluge, many are complaining of going without food or water for days.

The ICRC, which has already reached hundreds of thousands of flood victims, expects to reach around 1.4 million people within the next six weeks.

"My second Hindi film is love story with me and Prateik in central roles" – Trisha

b5a5315216risha1 "My second Hindi film is love story with me and Prateik in central roles" Trisha

Another South Indian screen-queen Trisha Krishnan is all set to invade Bollywood. And this Tamilian follows the trend of making her debut with a leading man far older than she. After the 43-year old Akshay Kumar, 27-year old Trisha’s co-star is going to be the 24-year old Prateik Babbar.
Says Trisha, “The second Hindi film is a love story with just me and the guy in central roles. It’s a subject that can’t go wrong. I’ve already done the Tamil version of this film Vinaaithandi Varuvaaya. Now the same director Gautham Menon is remaking it into Hindi with Prateik and me. I think we should be kick-starting it in August. I am excited because unlike Khatta Meetha where I don’t have a central part, this one has a central role for me.”
Trisha sounds wiser than her years when she says, “It was important for me to line up a second Hindi film before the first was released.”
More blunt talk from this unusual beauty? Coming up! Trisha actually confesses she had her lines in Hindi dubbed in her first film. When you tell her that Akshay Kumar said she spoke Hindi well, Trisha laughs it off. “Did he say that? I must thank him. The truth is, I was a bit nervous about doing my own lines in Hindi. I’ve done so many Telugu films. But I don’t know the language at all. I know the grammar in Hindi but I can barely manage to speak it.”
‘Toh aapki Hindi achchi hai?’ I ask. ‘Han Achchi hoon (sic.),’ she replies.
Trisha continues, “In Chennai no one talks in Hindi. I was a little worried about my Hindi since my character in Khatta Meetha is from a fluent Hindi-speaking belt. So both Priyan and I decided I wouldn’t dub my own lines. But it’s not a problem. I know I’ll soon master it. It’s simpler than the South Indian languages.”
Trisha is a 27-year veteran of Tamil and Telugu films. “I was so busy doing Tamil and Telugu films that I didn’t get time to consider Hindi films although offers did come. Also I wanted to do something that would give me a wide audience. I chose Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar. It can’t get any more massy than that. Their combination always works.”
Trisha is candid enough to admit she doesn’t have that much to do in Khatta Meetha. “It isn’t a heroine-centric role. But I felt it would give me visibility. Look, I may be known in the South. But in Bollywood no one knows me….not yet. I just wanted to be seen. When I started in the South I did smaller parts with big heroes. That always worked for me. One needs to be a part of hit films especially at the start.”
Priyadarshan is Trisha’s Christopher Columbus. “He launched me in the South 7 years ago. Now he’s launching me in Hindi in Khatta Meetha. He had promised he’d launch me in the right vehicle. In five minutes I knew I wanted to do Khatta Meetha. I want to first make sure I establish myself in Hindi before I do more experimental roles. This is the trend I followed in the South as well.”
On working with Akshay she says, “In the Khatta Meetha unit, Akshay was the only person I didn’t know. And he wasn’t just my co-star he was also my producer. He was really sweet. Priyan and Akshay are by now like family to one another. They made sure I was comfortable. This was one of the most professional units I’ve worked with.”
She’s pretty cool about the age difference. After all she’s currently doing a Tamil film in Europe where her co-star is the 55-plus Kamal Haasan.
Trishna says “I’ve been away from home for almost forty days. Though I’ve my mom with me I do miss home. But the shooting with Kamal Sir and Maddy is great fun.”
Trisha is ready to settle down in Mumbai. “It would depend on the offers. I’ve always had relatives in Mumbai. I’ve also done a lot of ads in Mumbai. Though my family won’t move out of Chennai, I am hardly in one city any way.”

aaef590d19aptma Yarn Making Factories To Observe Countrywide Strike Today: APTMAAll Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) will observe a countrywide strike against restrictions on the export of cotton yarn.
“Strike will be successful and will continue till the acceptance of our demands,” said Punjab APTMA Chairman Ejaz Gohar.

Addressing a press conference, vice chairman APTMA Sheikh Muhammad Akbar claimed that although yarn producers have manufactured more yarn but government adopted restrictions on export of yarn at 35,000 tonnes per month from 50,000 tonnes. He added that the entire sector is now confronted with challenges and now they are left with no option except to close down their businesses.

On the other hand, Minister for Textile and Industry Rana Farooq Saeed Khan rejecting APTMA’s March 18 strike call announced that the government would not be blackmailed by any sector.“Yarn manufacturers are trying to get undue advantage of the yearn situation but the government will not be impressed by any threat,” he added.

He said the government had cut export quota of yarn to 35 million kilogrammes from 50 million kgs to save the local industry. The minister recalled that the government saved textile industry last year when it was on the verge of collapse. “We had provided uninterrupted supply of gas, electricity and reduced mark-up rate to promote the industry,” he claimed.
