Tyson Gay wins London Diamond League
With Usain Bolt done for the 2010 season and Asafa Powell pulling out last minute, Tyson Gay won the 100 meters in a world leading 9.78 seconds at the Aviva London Grand Prix Diamond League Meeting today, August 13, 2010. Gay beat Bolt last week in Stockholm and Powell previously in Gateshead, but today even without Bolt or Powell’s presence, Gay bettered the Jamaican duo’s 2010 world leading 100 meter time. Going into the final heat at the London Diamond League Meeting, Tyson Gay had the fastest time of today’s qualifying heats, going 10.02 over American rival Walter Dix who took the second heat in 10.08. Cold temperatures and a strong head wind didn’t stop Tyson Gay from leading the men’s 100 meter race from start to finish. Like last week in Stockholm and earlier this season in Monaco, Tyson Gay’s 100 meter win in London served as a new meet record at the Crystal Palace Stadium.Yohan Blake of Jamaica came in behind Gay’s 9.78 result today in London, running 9.89 seconds for a healthy personal best. Richard Thompson of Trinidad continued a solid season by placing third 10.05. American Walter Dix, who beat Gay this year in the 200 meters, failed to make in impact in the final and finished last in a disappointing 12.46 after pulling up at 60 meters.Tyson Gay has finished strong during the 2010 Diamond League series, despite battling a nagging hamstring injury over the past year; he admitted to being sore after today’s win in London. The American record holder most recently beat Usain Bolt during their first head-to-head race of 2010 at the Diamond League Stockholm Meeting on August 6. Gay ran 9.84 seconds, getting the surprise 100 meter win and meet record over Bolt’s 9.97 result.Gay holds the American record of 9.69 seconds for the 100 meters from the 2009 Shanghai Grand Prix, while Usain Bolt holds the world record of 9.58 from the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Pietersen proud despite missing out on century
BIRMINGHAM: Kevin Pietersen”s long wait for another Test hundred continued on Saturday but he was pleased by a grafting 80 that helped leave England well-placed to beat Pakistan.
Pietersen”s innings at Edgbaston was eight more than the 72 Pakistan made in the first innings of the second Test.
It formed the centrepiece of an England total of 251 and, at stumps on the second day, Pakistan were 19 for one in their second innings.
Pakistan needed a further 160 runs to avoid an innings defeat that would leave them 2-0 down in this four-Test series after last week”s mammoth 354-run loss at Trent Bridge.
Pietersen has now gone 23 innings without a Test hundred since reaching three figures against the West Indies in Trinidad in March last year.
But together with fellow South Africa born batsman Jonathan Trott, he battled hard in difficult conditions to forge a third-wicket stand of 133.
The 30-year-old Pietersen has undergone a see-saw 18 months.
He was stripped of the England captaincy in January 2009, missed most of that year”s Ashes campaign with an Achilles tendon injury, endured a poor tour of his native South Africa and then returned to form as the man of the series in the team”s World Twenty20 triumph in the Caribbean earlier this year.

Happy towel day
Towel Day is celebrated every May 25 as a tribute by fans of the late author Douglas Adams. On this day, fans carry a towel with them to demonstrate their love for the books and the author. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams’ death on May 11, 2001.[2] The towel is a reference to Adams’s popular science fiction comedy series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Towel Day in honour of the late, great Douglas Adams. I remember listening to the original radio series way back in the day, having the novel when it first came out, even the vinyl album adaptation of the series the original cast recorded (in the days before audio books from the Beeb were common), then came the TV series (and those wonderful animations for the Guide segments).
I loved it; it was like science fiction met the Goons, especially the radio version. There was nothign else like it. How lovely that so many years after it and several years since we lost Douglas people still want to celebrate the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Lest we forget the so long and thanks for all the fish bit in the TV series did have a radiophonic workshop rendition of a dolphin whistling the Star Spangled Banner so if this was Douglas’s vision to get the film off to a start it was his move into another genre. At least he didn’t, at least not when he died, have the idea of Hitch Hiker’s Guide:
Fans of the fashion brand are heading to the company’s website to auto-tweet their Uniqlo virtual line number in the hope theirs will be selected to win a 1,000 yen (9€, $11) voucher for Uniqlo stores.

May 25 is #towelday in the Twittersphere and around the world as people pay tribute to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams – by taking a towel with them wherever they go. “#towelday” is third on the list of Twitter’s most talked about topics today, lodged between the memes “#didyoureallythink” (in second place) and #iknowsomeonethat (in fourth place).

Trinidad elects 1st female prime minister
Trinidad and Tobago has elected its first female prime minister in an early election, ousting an incumbent hurt by soaring crime and allegations of public corruption.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her five-party People’s Partnership coalition won 29 of 41 seats in the Caribbean nation’s parliament, according to preliminary election results Tuesday.
The 59-year-old attorney told thousands of supporters at a celebration early Tuesday morning that her government will not allow one ethnic group or social class to dominate the twin-island country.
It now appears that opposition leader General Kamla Persad-Bissessar will become the Caribbean nation’s first woman prime minister after her coalition won national elections yesterday. Prime Minister Patrick Manning has conceded defeat after his People’s National Movement lost 14 of its 26 seats in Parliament.
Former Attorney General Persad-Bissessar’s People’s Partnership coalition won 29 seats with her United National Congress party taking 21 seats themselves, giving the UNC a simple majority in the 41-seat Parliament.
She identified the ’drain on our resources presently occurring through corruption, incompetence and political vanity’ as the number one priority for attention should the UNC get into government.
Voters in Trinidad and Tobago are voting in snap elections which could bring the energy-rich Caribbean nation its first female prime minister. Incumbent Patrick Manning called the election — which follows the dissolution of parliament in April — a risky gamble in the middle of his five-year term. The opposition, led by Attorney General Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the head of a five-party coalition, led opinion polls ahead of the vote.Duration: 01:13
Trinidad and Tobago votes in tightly-fought snap election

PORT OF SPAIN: Trinidad and Tobago held closely-fought snap elections on Monday, with a former attorney general hoping to become the country”s first woman prime minister.
Incumbent Patrick Manning called the vote in a risky gamble in the middle of his five-year term in this energy-rich Caribbean nation close to Venezuela”s coast.
But opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who heads a five-party coalition, led late opinion polls after tapping into voters” worries about rising crime and corruption.
After a loud campaign rallies with partying in the spirit of the nation”s famous carnival, the election took place quietly, with no music or posters near polling stations and an alcohol sales ban in place.
The Electoral and Boundaries Commission meanwhile called for an investigation into ballots reportedly not initialed by officials — which would make them void if there were a recount — in five seats, including two key marginal seats.
Just over one million in the nation of 1.3 million people were granted two hours off work to cast their ballot before polls closed at 6:00 pm (2200 GMT).
The winner needs a simple majority of seats in the 41-member parliament, where Manning”s ruling People”s National Movement (PNM) now holds 26 seats, with the remainder going to the main opposition United National Congress (UNC).
Foreign observers expected little change in energy policy in the oil- and gas-rich nation, regardless of who wins.
Politics in the former British colony have long been divided along lines of Indian or African descent.
Manning”s PNM, which has dominated politics for half a century, draws most of its support from Afro-Trinidadians.
Persad-Bissessar of the UNC, which largely relies on Indo-Trinidadian backing, is seeking multi-ethnic support in her “People”s Partnership.”
She has promised to increase pensions and create a multimillion dollar fund for sick children in a campaign focused on change.
The Manning administration has been under fire over allegations of wasting resources and neglecting much-needed healthcare spending, after it poured millions of dollars into giant building projects and hosted two major summits last year.
“There”s been a lot of talk about the expenditure of the budget and so it”s really time for a change,” said Betty Davidson, showing a red finger after voting in central Port-of-Spain.
Manning”s supporters laud the 63-year-old”s free higher education policy and his long experience.
“I want to go to university, and that”s why I want to choose the PNM,” said grinning voter Lisa Ramirez.
It was unclear why Manning decided to dissolve parliament in April, shortly before a vote of no confidence he was expected to win, but also amid corruption allegations that have damaged both main parties in recent years.
The opposition”s campaign against crime pointed to a growing murder rate in this nation struggling with gang violence and drug trafficking from South America.
The coalition also includes the multi-racial Congress of the People, the National Joint Action Committee, the Tobago Organization of the People and the Movement for Social Justice.
Observers from the regional Caribbean Community (Caricom) were present at some polling stations, and foreign diplomats also observed the vote.

Portsmouth have been boosted by the news that Aruna Dindane will be free to play in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.
The Ivory Coast striker was expected to miss the Wembley showdown due to a clause in his contract.
Dindane has made 20 appearances for the south coast club this season while on loan from Lens.
It was believed that the French club would be due a payment of £4million should he made another appearance.
However, club administrator, Andrew Andronikou has revealed that the clause does not kick in until Dindane has made 22 appearances. Read more

Eric Williams First Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago
Eric Eustace Williams (25 September 1911 – 29 March 1981) was the first Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. He served from 1956 until his death in 1981. He was also a noted Caribbean historian.
He won an island scholarship in 1932 which allowed him to attend St Catherine’s Society, Oxford (which later became St Catherine’s College), where he was ranked first in the First Class of Oxford students graduating in History in 1935, while representing the university in soccer. In Inward Hunger, his autobiography, he described his experience of racism in Britain, and the impact on him of his travels in Germany after the Nazi seizure of power.
His doctoral thesis, The Economic Aspects of the Abolition of the Slave Trade and West Indian Slavery, was both a direct attack on the idea that moral and humanitarian motives were the key facts in the victory of British abolitionism, and a covert critique of the idea common in the 1930s, emanating in particular from the pen of Oxford Professor Reginald Coupland, that British imperialism was essentially propelled by humanitarian and benevolent impulses. Williams’s argument owed much to the influence of C. L. R. James, whose The Black Jacobins, also completed in 1938, also offered an economic and geostrategic explanation for the rise of British abolitionism.
The 1961 elections gave the PNM 57% of the votes and 20 of the 30 seats. This two-thirds majority allowed them to draft the Independence Constitution without input from the DLP. Although supported by the Colonial Office, independence was blocked by the DLP, until Williams was able to make a deal with DLP leader Rudranath Capildeo which strengthened the rights of the minority party and expanded the number of Opposition Senators. With Capildeo’s assent, Trinidad and Tobago became independent on August 31, 1962.

Lotus, Jasmine, Jigar, Bozo, Bonsai and Shimmer. These are no names of racehorses. These are names of characters in the film DULHA MIL GAYA. With names like these, you can imagine what the film slotted as romance/comedy will be like. It is sad that Bollywood end last year with a bang with 3 IDIOTS and then have to begin with something as idiotic as this. I mean, it is not even a movie. The only time it feels like one is when Shah Rukh Khan makes his guest appearance.
Rest of the time you have to grin and bear it. Imagine at the start of the film you are treated to a dialogue like this. Sushmita Sen (Shimmer) asks Jigar, a DJ who is also a friend, if he wants a lift home. Jigar says, “No fine, I’m thanks.” The rest of the dialogues pretty much fit in this mould.
In all her roles so far, Sushmita Sen is Sushmita Sen. You don’t see any character on screen. You just see the diva that she is. Mercifully, here she plays a top model. It’s her attitude that always comes across, never her acting.
The story goes thus. Shimmer is a much sought after model in the West Indies. She has Lotus her chef and Jasmine her ‘girl Friday’ always at hand. Not to forget Bozo her pup who is involved in every decision making. Fardeen (Bonsai) is a rich Casanova who will never marry. Shimmer is his best friend. He flies down to Punjab because there is a clause in his father’s will which says he should marry Samarpreet (Ishita Sharma) and if he fails to do so or divorces within 10 years the entire property worth billions of dollars will go to some fishing company. So Bonsai flies down to Punjab and marries Samarpreet. Next day he is back in Trinidad, alone. A few months later, Samarpreet is on her way to Trinidad to track her missing husband. She gets thrown out of Bonsai’s palatial mansion when there is a party going on, is knocked down by a speeding car, wakes up at Shimmer’s home and turns into Samara to woo Bonsai back. Meanwhile SRK is waiting for Shimmer to say yes to him. This is the romance in the story. As for the comedy, it began with the first dialogue!
Ishita made her mark two years ago with LIONS OF PUNJAB and followed it up with DIL DOSTI ETC. This time she gets a bigger canvas to show her talent. If only the makers had consulted Bozo before making this movie!
