Militants assail NATO base in Afghanistan

The bomber detonated his explosives outside the gate of a base in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province, said Salim Ahsas, the southern regional head of the Afghan police. The gunmen then started shoot toward the base. One was killed, another was captured and the third escaped, Ahsas said.

No one else was killed, he said. The Interior Ministry said in a statement that three civilians were wounded one woman and two children.
The attack occurred on the same day that a government health worker and his driver were killed in a roadside bomb blast in the north.

Dr. Ahmad Jawed Karim and his driver hit an explosive as they were driving in Takhar province s Dahana Sangi district, the health ministry said in a statement.

In the south meanwhile, two international service members were killed one in an insurgent attack and the other in a bomb blast.
NATO forces said the service members died Sunday but did not provide further detail.

NATO typically waits for national authorities to identify their dead and provide details of fatal incidents.

The latest military death makes 78 international troops killed so far this month.

Troops kill 3 militants in Swat

SWAT: Three militants were killed in a fresh clash with security forces in Matta tehsil of Swat early Monday morning.

Acting on a tip off, troops raided a house in Shagai village of Matta tehsil, where suspected militants were holed up.

However, militants opened fire at the troops who retaliated, killing three attackers.

Besides, five hand grenades and heavy arms were recovered from the raided house. SAMAA

KABUL: Four troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed in an insurgent attack in western Afghanistan on Saturday, ISAF said, the latest foreign casualties in a war now in its 10th year.

Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since the Taliban were overthrown by U.S.-backed forces in late 2001. More than 2,000 foreign troops have died since the start of the war, more than half of those in the last two years.

The rising violence in Afghanistan will weigh heavily on President Barack Obama when his administration faces mid-term Congressional elections next month amid sagging public support for the war and ahead of a strategy review in December.

Gen. Kayani spends Eid with troops in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani spent Eid with troops deployed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, the COAS flew over flood affected areas of Swat and visited Khawazakhela, Gharalamai (North Waziristan Agency) and Jandola (South Waziristan Agency).

He informally interacted with the troops and appreciated their role in providing relief to the flood affected people.

RAWALPINDI: FWO after exhaustive efforts of forty day troops of FWO have opened Karakoram High way (KKH) for light traffic on Sunday. 4 major bridges, which were washed away have been repaired including Dubair Bridge.

According to a press release of Inter Services public Relations (ISPR), the Dubair Bridge on KKH which destroyed on 27 July has been reopened. More than 150 soldiers of FWO relentlessly to complete the bridge.

Pakistan Army Troops have evacuated 43 critically standard people through helicopters to safer places and other 2,644 people from various flood hit areas of Jati, Mehar, Johi Shah, Shahdad Kot and Sajawal. Army has established 25 relief camps in Sindh. 33,047 people were provided cooked food and 24 tons of rations were distributed among the flood affected people in Sindh in last 24 hours.

BUNER: Security forces on Sunday killed a key Taliban commander and his two accomplices in Buner District.

The dead Taliban commander, Naseebzada, was wanted by security forces in several acts of terrorism.

According to sources, an exchange of fire took place between army troops and Taliban militants in hilly area of Pir Baba.

In Lower Orakzai, troops pounded militant hideouts, killing two terrorists and arresting two others.

Pak Army makes relief ramps, distributes cooked food

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan army troops have established four relief camps at Naseerabad and are providing cooked food and medical treatment to marooned people.

According to an ISPR press release, Pakistan army has sent 180 tons of ration, 5,800 tents, medicines worth Rs. 2 million and 26 tons of water to the flood affected areas of Naseerabad.

A total of 536 tons of relief items have been dispatched so far from Karachi to Sukkur, Kashmore, Jacobabad and Shikarpur.

At Rahim Yar Khan, over 2,000 flood affectees are being provided with cooked food and fodder to 2,150 livestock.

A total of 470 tons of relief items worth Rs. 17.5 million have been sent to southern Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KP and Gilgit-Baltistan from Lahore.

Army Chief visits flood-hit areas

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Sunday undertook visit of the areas affected by heavy rains and floods.

According to ISPR, Gen. Kayani reviewed the relief works of Pak Army by visiting flood-affected areas of Nowshehra, Charsadda and Swat.

He directed that no effort be spared in helping the victims of worst floods in living memory of the country.

On the occasion, the COAS was briefed about the relief and rescue works being undertaken by the troops.

On his return, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani airlifted 17 people stranded by floods in his helicopter.
