COLOMBO: Three trucks carrying explosives blew up inside a police compound in eastern Sri Lanka on Friday, killing at least 25 people in what the military called an accident.

The blast occurred in Karayinadaru, about 50 km from the eastern port of Batticaloa and in an ethnically mixed area controlled by the Tamil Tiger separatists until 2007.

“The final death toll figure is 25 including 16 police officers and nine civilians including two Chinese nationals,” military spokesman Major-General Ubaya Medawela said.

Earlier, he had given a death toll of 60 killed, saying most were police officers. He did not elaborate on why the death toll had been reduced by more than half.

At least 52 were wounded, with three dying in hospital, P. Murugananda, director at Batticaloa General Hospital, told Reuters by telephone.

Hunza Lake outflow rises

HUNZA: Water outflow from Attabad Lake has been exceeded from 1800 cusecs whereas a relief camp in Shashkat Pine inundated.

The level of lake has been reached to 380 feet. Four houses have been submerged in water in Galmat whereas two in Shashkat. On the other hand, water entered into a relief camp in Shashkat Pine. Fifteen families are residing in the camp, which will be shifted to safer place soon.

Meanwhile, sporadic rain in district Hunza-Nagar hampered rescue activities in the affected areas.

Emergency declared in Balochistan coastal areas

QUETTA: The residents of Balochistan’s coastal areas including Sonmiani, Gadani and Dam where emergency has been declared in view of approaching Phet cyclone, are being evacuated to safer places, Geo News reported Thursday.

Talking to Geo News, Director Met Department Balochistan Saifullah Shami said the next 12 hours were crucial for the coastal areas in the province, though the cyclone was expected to downgrade in its run up to landfall here.

He added if the storm raged on with the same intensity, the coastal areas including Marah, Pasni and Gwadar could be most hit.

Shami said the rain weather system would enter Balochistan coastal areas including Gadani, Gwadar, Marah and Jiwani during the next 14 hours.

Disaster Management Authority Balochistan Director General Hassan Baloch said all necessary arrangements have been finalized in the province’s coastal areas; also, a control room has been established to make emergency steps and keep an eye on the developing situation of the storm.

He said two trucks carrying various relief goods including tents, edibles and medicines have been dispatched to Lasbela which would reach the concerning areas today.

05660b5e44troyed Attack On Nato Supply In Chaman, 25 Vehicles DestroyedCHAMAN: The fire, which broke out after blast and firing at the containers and Nato oil tankers in Chaman area of Pak-Afghan border, could not be put out as yet, Geo News reported in the wee hours of Monday.

Also, the contingents of army have been called in to control the situation.

According to sources, some unidentified miscreants attacked with rockets at the Nato-supply cavalcade stationed at Pak-Afghan border a little after Iftar time and fired gunshots, which caused to set vehicles on blaze.

According to sources, over 25 containers, oil tankers, trailers and the vehicles mounted on trailers were all destroyed with three people injured in the incident.

Soon after the incident, Frontier Corps and Police put a security cordon around the area.

It should be mentioned here over thousand Nato supply vehicles and other trucks carrying commercial goods are standing stuck owing to the difference of mode of checking between the forces of Pak and Afghan forces.

Also, some unidentified miscreants tried to annihilate the containers for Nato supply on Sunday evening a little before Iftar; however, the bomb was neutralized with on time action.
