Charleston Gazette
The Charleston Gazette is a newspaper in West Virginia. It is published Monday through Friday mornings. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the combined Gazette-Mail is published, however it is produced by the Gazette.
The Gazette was established in 1873. At the time, it was a weekly newspaper known as the Kanawha Chronicle. It had a couple of other owners and names—The Kanawha Gazette and the Daily Gazette—before its name was officially changed to The Charleston Gazette in 1907.
The Chilton family acquired formal interest in the paper in 1912. William E. Chilton, a U.S. senator, was publisher of The Gazette, as were his son, William E. Chilton II, and grandson, W. E. “Ned” Chilton III, Yale graduate and classmate/protegĂ© of conservative columnist William F. Buckley, Jr.
In 1918 a fire destroyed the Gazette building at 909 Virginia St. The newspaper was moved to 227 Hale St., where it remained for 42 years.
Under a consolidation agreement with the Charleston Daily Mail, the newspaper merged its production and distribution with that newspaper from 1961-2004. The two newspapers had different ownership and writing staffs, jointly owned the production and distribution company.
A year later, following the death of Robert L. Smith, W.E. “Ned” Chilton III was named publisher of the Gazette. He served in that position until his death in 1987. During that time he earned a well-deserved reputation as a “firebrand liberal.” Ned Chilton used to say that the job of a newspaper was to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” However, in 1965, the newspaper fired all of its blue collar workers for joining a labor union.
Former West Virginia Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr., a staunch Republican who both won and lost an election to John D. “Jay” Rockefeller IV, derisively renamed The Charleston Gazette “The Morning Sick Call”. This was in reference to the Gazette{{‘]]s reporting of various graft and corruption allegations in Governor Moore’s administrations. (Moore was later convicted by the Republican United States Attorney of income tax evasion, perjury, election fraud and taking more than $500,000 from a coal operator for state favors).
Ned Chilton’s widow, Elizabeth Early “Betty” Chilton, is now president of the Daily Gazette Co. and publisher of The Charleston Gazette. It is still a family-owned newspaper, one of the few independents still operating. The paper’s editor, prize-winning journalist James A. Haught, has been with the paper for more than 50 years.
The paper has won numerous awards and received significant national recognition for a newspaper of its size. Recent efforts that have received such recognition include a series of stories that resulted in the resignation and criminal conviction of the state House of Delegates education chairman, a series on the environmental effects of mountaintop removal coal mining, a series on the state’s failed attempts to deal with its residents suffering from mental illness, and a series on the deaths nationwide from the widespread use of methadone.
The Gazette’s editorial page is usually left-of-center. It was one of the few daily newspapers in West Virginia not to endorse George W. Bush in the 2004 election.
The final Sunday Gazette-Mail issue of the year picks a “West Virginian of the Year” on a similar basis to the Time magazine “Person of the Year”.
In May 2007, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the owners of The Charleston Gazette and the Charleston Daily Mail, alleging that the joint operating agreement between the two violates antitrust laws. The Justice Department said the JOA lost its antitrust protection in 2004, when the Daily Gazette Co. bought the controlling interest from MediaNews, the company that owned the Daily Mail. MediaNews is paid a fee to manage the editorial operations of the Daily Mail.
In their response to the lawsuit, the owners of the Gazette and Daily Mail asked that the lawsuit be dismissed. They noted that both Charleston newspapers remain editorially independent. They also noted that never before has the Justice Department sued the newspapers in an ongoing JOA.

Christmas Time For The Jews
Christmas Time For The Jews: latest new updates Christmas Time For The Jews, A group calling itself “Lobby for Jewish Values” is handing out fliers condemning Christmas, pushing for a ban on all public displays of Christmas trees and other “foolish” Christian symbols and asking the public to boycott restaurants and other public institutions which do so. I guess it’s really true – the abused often grow up to become the abusers.
I completely appreciate that for almost two thousand years, Christmas was a very scary time for most Jews living in Christian cultures. I even appreciate that one response to that pain and fear is to lash out at any expression of the holiday. But the fact that such behavior is understandable does not make it acceptable. An explanation is not an excuse, especially for such a small-minded and mean-spirited response to the desire of decent people to celebrate a holiday sacred to their community and much of the world.
It’s especially painful and sadly ironic that in the name of Jewish values, Jews would do to others precisely what was done to us for millennia. But I guess the seduction of getting to be in that role is why the Torah repeats the teaching that we are obligated to remember that we were slaves in Egypt, more than other single teaching.
And while nobody should think that attitude of this “Lobby for Jewish Values” represents the thinking of most Jews in Israel, until people can make a real Jewish case for allowing the public celebration of multiple traditions in Israel, the majority will be susceptible to being held hostage by such religious totalitarianism. So to that end, I would share a few additional Jewish values which might make that case.
First, all people are created, according to Genesis, in the image of God. According the Rabbis in the Mishnah, that means that we are all equally valuable and unique. In other words, expressions of faith not our own, can be both genuinely not ours, and truly authentic expressions of faith.
Second, having been commanded by Leviticus to love others as we would love ourselves, and by the sages to refrain from doing to others what is hateful to us, we are obligated to secure the very religious freedom which we were denied.
Third, Jewish tradition does not teach that others must be like us to be present with us. In fact, the gerim mentioned throughout the Hebrew Bible are not, as often mistranslated, converts, but fellow travelers i.e. gentiles who shared the life of the ancient Israelite community.
Fourth, we should take the prophet Isaiah at his world when he teaches that god desires that God’s house will be “a house of prayer for all peoples”. If the longed-for Temple will welcome the many discreet peoples, amim in Hebrew, who will worship there, it seems that welcoming them to Jerusalem should be a no-brainer.

Iranian Cyber Army
Iranian Cyber Army Breaking news updates :- Popular micro blogging Twitter was briefly shut down overnight, its home page replaced with an image claiming the site had been hacked by the “Iranian Cyber Army.”
Technology blogs including TechCrunch said Twitter went down around 0600 GMT for about an hour.
The website’s official blog acknowledged the disruption. “As we tweeted a bit ago, Twitter’s DNS records were temporarily compromised tonight but have now been fixed,” the site’s co-founder Biz Stone wrote on the blog.
“We will update with more information and details once we’ve investigated more fully,” he added.
Visitors to the site at that time reached a page with an image of a green flag under red text reading “Iranian Cyber Army” and “This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army.”
Screengrabs posted on Flickr clearly showed additional text below the image in English.
“U.S.A. Think They Controlling And Managing Internet By Their Access, But They Don’t, We Control And Manage Internet By Our Power, So Do Not Try To Stimulation Iranian Peoples To,” the text said.
“NOW WHICH COUNTRY IN EMBARGO LIST? IRAN? USA? WE PUSH THEM IN EMBARGO LIST. Take Care,” it read.
TechCrunch reported that the disruption also affected Google searches for Twitter. It posted a screengrab showing that searches for a time returned a result reading “This Web Site Has Been Hacked by Iranian Cyber Army,” above Farsi script.
Iranian demonstrators protesting the results of June presidential elections used Twitter extensively, both to organize marches and to release information about their movement.
Their use of the microblogging site led some to dub the pro-democracy action against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a “Twitter revolution” and made the Iranian election one of the top “trends” on the site this year.
