With Usain Bolt done for the 2010 season and Asafa Powell pulling out last minute, Tyson Gay won the 100 meters in a world leading 9.78 seconds at the Aviva London Grand Prix Diamond League Meeting today, August 13, 2010. Gay beat Bolt last week in Stockholm and Powell previously in Gateshead, but today even without Bolt or Powell’s presence, Gay bettered the Jamaican duo’s 2010 world leading 100 meter time. Going into the final heat at the London Diamond League Meeting, Tyson Gay had the fastest time of today’s qualifying heats, going 10.02 over American rival Walter Dix who took the second heat in 10.08. Cold temperatures and a strong head wind didn’t stop Tyson Gay from leading the men’s 100 meter race from start to finish. Like last week in Stockholm and earlier this season in Monaco, Tyson Gay’s 100 meter win in London served as a new meet record at the Crystal Palace Stadium.Yohan Blake of Jamaica came in behind Gay’s 9.78 result today in London, running 9.89 seconds for a healthy personal best. Richard Thompson of Trinidad continued a solid season by placing third 10.05. American Walter Dix, who beat Gay this year in the 200 meters, failed to make in impact in the final and finished last in a disappointing 12.46 after pulling up at 60 meters.Tyson Gay has finished strong during the 2010 Diamond League series, despite battling a nagging hamstring injury over the past year; he admitted to being sore after today’s win in London. The American record holder most recently beat Usain Bolt during their first head-to-head race of 2010 at the Diamond League Stockholm Meeting on August 6. CALIFORNIA: California governor Arnold signs gay marriage bill, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill recognizing gay marriages sanctioned in other states during the nearly five months such unions were legal in California.
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said the action is consistent with a state Supreme Court ruling upholding the marriages of same-sex couples who tied the knot in California before voters approved Proposition 8.
Proposition 8 is a state constitutional amendment passed in November that limits marriage to a man and a woman.
The bill signed by the governor late on Sunday also said gay and lesbian couples who were married in other states after Proposition 8’s passage have the same rights and benefits that California grants domestic partners.
