Three dead, 10 missing in US gas explosion

WASHINGTON: Another massive explosion rocked the US oil and gas industry last night, with three people reported dead and ten missing.
The natural gas pipeline explosion in North Texas caused a massive blast that could be heard up to eight miles away.
Laura Harlin, a resident in the town of Granbury, said the explosion made a “huge rumbling” and sounded like a tornado.
Enterprise Products Partners owns the 36-inch pipeline, which is part of its Texas Intra-state system.
Chester Nolen, city manager of Cleburne, Texas, the nearest city to the blast, said ten people were missing after the blast.
The blast was originally thought to be an oil well explosion. An electrical crew was digging a hole when it struck the gas pipeline, an emergency services spokesman in Hood County, Texas, said.
Enterprise spokesman Rick Rainey said: “We have isolated that segment of line. Our crews have been dispatched to the scene.”
In a separate incident a crew drilling a natural gas well through an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia were caught in a massive fireball when they hit a pocket of methane that ignited.
ncaa baseball tournament 2010

Florida International is in the 2010 NCAA Baseball Tournament now. With the help of streaking Garrett Wittels, Florida International won the Sun Belt championship game on Sunday, extending their season at least two
more games. Florida International will be seeded in the 64 team field and placed into one of the regional brackets which get announced on Monday, May 31st. Odds are good that they will either play in the Gainesville Regional or the Coral Gables Regional in order to stick a bit close to home during the first round of the tournament. It will give FIU and Garret Wittels a chance to shine even more when the schedule kicks into place.
Washington State finished the season with a 34-20 overall record, posting a 15-12 record in a very tough Pac-10 Conference. Pointing to how tough the conference was this year, Arizona State, which won the regular season Pac-10 championship, is the No. 1 overall seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. There are several other Pac-10 teams that made the tournament as well, including UCLA, Oregon, and Arizona just to name a few. They received their marching orders on May 31st as well, and all of these Pac-10 teams will be playing in difference regional tournaments.

Every team that makes the 2010 NCAA Baseball Tournament is placed into a four team grouping. Within those four teams is a double-elimination tournament, where one team emerges to play in the Super Regionals or basically the second round. Just 16 teams emerge from the Regionals, and just eight teams emerge from the Super Regionals to make up the final field of eight teams that will play for the 2010 College Baseball World Series.
Joining Coastal Carolina in the double-elimination regional are the College of Charleston, North Carolina State and Stony Brook. The Chanticleers will open with Seawolves, who won the America East title. The Cougars will play the Wolfpack in the other opener.
Coastal Carolina leads the nation with 51 wins and won all 25 of their games to take the Big South Conference crown.
Each of the 16 regional winners advance to the super regionals, with the eight remaining teams earning trips to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, beginning June 19.
The winner of the Columbia regional plays the winner of the regional hosted by Coastal Carolina.

Auburn, seeded first in its regional, will play host to Clemson, Southern Miss and Jacksonville State beginning Friday at Plainsman Park.
The NCAA College World Series field of 64 was announced on Monday.
The Tigers, winners of the SEC Western Division, will face Jacksonville State while Clemson will play Southern Miss. Game times will be announced later.
Meanwhile, Alabama will go on the road to Atlanta and the Georgia Tech regional. Alabama, the second seed, will face third-seeded Elon in the first game. Top-seeded Georgia Tech and Mercer will follow in the second game.
The Yellow Jackets are one of eight seeds in the national tournament (8). The top seed is Arizona State followed by Texas, Florida, Coastal Carolina, Virginia, UCLA, and Louisville.
Eight SEC teams made the tournament including Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, South Carolina and Florida. Over in the other side of the 2010 College World Series bracket we have No. 10 seeded Arizona against No. 15 Tennessee in a 4 p.m. PST match on June 3rd. That game will then be followed by No. 6 Georgia vs. No. 3 Washington at 6:30 p.m. PST. The winners face off at 6 p.m. PST on Friday, June 4th, and the losers play at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 5th.
This could be a very interesting double elimination tournament, and there are a number of great teams left in the 2010 College World Series that could potentially win the whole thing. Washington might be the favorite, but you can never count out UCLA, or that high-powered offense coming out of Florida.

Oil stops gushing from Gulf of Mexico well
May 27, 2010 by Trend PK
NEW ORLEANS: BP has stopped the oil gushing out of a ruptured Gulf of Mexico well, US officials said Thursday, but cautioned it was still too early to declare victory in the five-week disaster.
“They”ve been able to stabilize the wellhead, they”re pumping mud down it. They”ve stopped the hydrocarbons from coming up,” said Coast Guard chief Thad Allen, who is coordinating the US government”s battle against the oil spill.
He told local radio WWL First News that BP “had some success overnight” but cautioned the British energy giant was “in a period of kind of wait and see right now where they see how the well stabilizes.”
“So everybody is cautiously optimistic, but there is no reason to declare victory yet. We need to watch it very, very carefully.”
The news came after BP yesterday launched a maneuver dubbed a “top kill” in a bid to plug the leak which has been gushing oil into the Gulf since a April 20 explosion ripped through the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform.
After at least two failed attempts to cap the spill, BP has come under increasing pressure from the US administration and furious residents helplessly watching oil wash ashore, with 100 miles (160 kilometers) of Louisiana coastline now contaminated.
President Barack Obama moved Thursday to extend a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling for six months.
He was to take questions at a press conference over the government”s handling of the spill ahead of his second visit to the region on Friday.
In a new development highlighting environmental problems, all 125 commercial fishing boats helping to clean up the oil off Louisiana”s Breton Sound were recalled after four workers reported health problems.
The crew members aboard three separate vessels working in the area “reported experiencing nausea, dizziness, headaches and chest pains,” the unified joint command center said.
It raised new questions about the risks of working with the thick gobs of oil washing up on shores here and the toxicity of tens of thousands of gallons of chemical dispersants used by BP to break up the slick.
After reviewing the disaster that sank the Deepwater Horizon rig, a White House aide said Obama would extend for six months a moratorium on offshore oil drilling in deep water.
He also will delay planned oil exploration projects off the coast of Alaska until after a review by a presidential commission.
Obama will also cancel plans to lease drilling rights in the western Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia, the aide said.
The work to cap the leak is being carried out by remote-controlled robotic submarines a mile (1,600 meters) below the surface.
It aims to drown the oil flow by dumping heavy drilling fluids on top, pushing back the oil long enough to dump cement on top and then seal it with cement.
After BP officials admitted there had been a litany of failures and warnings signs in the hours before the explosion, the New York Times reported that the company chose a casing for the well that was the riskier of two options, partly because it made “the best economic case.”
Citing a BP document, the daily said the concern with the method BP chose was that if the cement around the casing pipe did not seal properly, gases could leak all the way to the wellhead, where only a single seal would serve as a barrier.
The other option under consideration would have provided two barriers in case of a gas leak, the Times said.
Rig workers and company officials have said gases were leaking through the cement hours before the explosion.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said Wednesday some 100 kilometers of his state”s coastline was now soiled, more than doubling the previous estimate. The oil is imperiling rare species of animal and plant life, and has also led to a major fishing ban in the marine rich waters.
A tour of coastal areas left the president of the local Plaquemines parish aghast at the devastation.
“The same oil that”s been out there two weeks ago is still out there. And nothing is being done,” Billy Nungesser told CNN Wednesday.
BP officials have also readied back-up options but some, including the drilling of relief wells to divert the flow and allow the original well to be capped, could take several months.
French Open: Nadal and Roddick advance
On the men’s side, four-time champion Rafael Nadal has reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win over Frenchman Gianni Mina. Nadal remains unbeaten this season on his favorite surface after improving his career record on the Parisian clay to 32-and-1.
Sixth-seed Andy Roddick rallied to win his first-round match, beating Jarkko Nieminen, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. The match was Roddick’s first on clay since he lost in the fourth round at Roland Garros last year.
On the womens side, Justine Henin advanced to the second round of the French Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tsvetana Pironkova. Henin was playing in the tournament for the first time since winning it for the fourth time in 2007. The Belgian has won seven Grand Slam titles in her career.
Last year’s finalist Dinara Safina has crashed out in the first round. The ninth-seed lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to veteran Kimiko Date Krumm. The 39-year-old Date Krumm, who came out of a 12-year retirement in 2008, became the second oldest woman to win a match in Roland Garros in the Open Era, after Virginia Wade in 1985.
No. 12 Maria Sharapova has reached the second round with a straight sets win over Russian qualifier Ksenia Pervak, 6-3, 6-2. Sharapova, who has never won the French Open, had won 24 consecutive first-round matches at Grand Slams until being upset at that stage at the Australian Open in January.
