Karzai wants US to cut back Afghan military operations

WASHINGTON: Afghan President Hamid Karzai wants the U.S. military to scale back the visibility and intensity of its operations in Afghanistan and end night raids that he said incited people to join the Taliban insurgency, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.
“The time has come to reduce military operations,” Karzai told the Post in an interview. “The time has come to reduce the presence of, you know, boots in Afghanistan to reduce the intrusiveness into the daily Afghan life.”
The Post said his comments put him at odds with U.S. General David Petraeus, who has made “capture-and-kill” missions a central part of counterinsurgency strategy.
In the past three months, such night raids of Afghan homes by U.S. Special Operations forces had killed or captured 368 insurgency leaders, the Post said.

After weeks of noisy complaints about Facebook’s newest privacy issues, Mark Zuckerberg uses an op-ed in the Washington Post to reverse course and beg his users for forgiveness.
Hah! Not really.
Zuckerberg’s 528-word memo might seem contrite, but only if you skim quickly. Read closely, and you’ll see that it’s a classic non-apology — he’s sorry that Facebook “move[d] too fast”. That’s the kind of thing you say in a job interview if someone’s lazy enough to ask you to describe your biggest weakness — “Sometimes I try too hard”
The letter isn’t particularly apologetic — you won’t find words like “sorry”, “fault”, or “mistake”. Instead, it’s more of an acknowledgment that Facebook has heard the criticism and will be responding to it. Soon, Facebook will be rolling out a new set of simplified privacy controls and an easy way to “turn off all third-party services”. Here are some key quotes from Zuckerberg’s letter:
We have heard the feedback. There needs to be a simpler way to control your information. In the coming weeks, we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use. We will also give you an easy way to turn off all third-party services. We are working hard to make these changes available as soon as possible.
The biggest message we have heard recently is that people want easier control over their information. Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex. Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark.
We have also heard that some people don’t understand how their personal information is used and worry that it is shared in ways they don’t want. I’d like to clear that up now. Many people choose to make some of their information visible to everyone so people they know can find them on Facebook. We already offer controls to limit the visibility of that information and we intend to make them even stronger.
Indian Army Evacuates Kashmir Hospitals, Schools
SRINAGAR: The Indian army has evacuated all hospitals and schools in Indian-administered Kashmir in a bid to “improve the security situation” there.
“This has been done to reduce the visibility of the army, without in anyway diluting out counter-militant grid,” Defense Minister A. K. Antony said on Wednesday in a visit to the region.
The paramilitary police will take more responsibility in securing the state, most notably the key Jammu-Srinagar highway, he noted.
The Indian minister said “the process of winning hearts and minds of people is never an easy one,” recalling the unpopular presence of the Indian army in the state.
The military has recently pulled some 30,000 troops out of Kashmir.
However, the Indian official warned that militant attempts to infiltrate into the region from Pakistan had increased.

Fog Disturbs Communication in Punjab

LAHORE, News Trends: Thick fog has badly affected transportation in Lahore and other cities of Punjab as visibility problem caused several traffic mishaps in which many persons were injured.
Intense mist has blanketed Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot and adjoining areas. The motorway was opened after 10-hour closure for transport. The motorway officials have advised the drivers to observe caution and drive on low speed.
The fog also caused four to six hours delay in arrival and departure schedule of trains.
The lower visibility also disturbed various flights.
Chief Meteorologist Mohammed Riaz has said the mercury goes down due to western winds, however the visibility will be improved in coming few days.
