LONDON/KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Wednesday that alliance with Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) will be continued, adding that it is incorrect to term every murder (in Karachi) as targeted killing.

Rehman Malik called upon MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London and exchanged views about law and order and security environs in the country.

Malik stated that he did not come to London in the wake of unusual circumstances. Target killing in Karachi is very old phenomena however, every murder can’t be called target killing, he added. Trend Pk

Gold, silver, oil down as dollar gain

Gold, silver and crude oil recorded downward trend in the wake of the improvement in dollar in international markets on Monday.
Crude oil shed three percent prices within two days in international markets, gold two percent while silver declined 4 percent. Oil is down by another 70 cents and traded at 80.56 cents. Gold is sold at $1360 per ounce and silver stood at $23.93. Dollar is up by 0.4 percent against other currencies.

MQM condemns attacks on Youm-e-Ali processions

KARACHI: Leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Altaf Hussain, has strongly denounced today’s gun and bomb attacks on Youm-e-Ali processions in Lahore and Karachi.

At least 28 people were killed and 200 others wounded after three suicide blasts ripped through the main Youm-e-Ali procession in Lahore.

Earlier, unknown gunmen ambushed a mourning procession in Karachi, injuring six people.

In a statement issued from London today (Wednesday), Altaf Hussain said terrorists are aimed at harming the country.

He urged the government to ensure the arrest of elements involved in launching attacks on mourners. SAMAA

Security beefed up in Islamabad, other cities

LAHORE: Security was put on high alert in Islamabad and other cities after suicide bombers struck a Youm-e-Ali procession in Lahore on Wednesday.

Islamabad police chief said security has been beefed up in the federal capital in the wake of Lahore bombings.

Strict security measures have been taken at mosques, imambargahs and other sensitive locations.

Similarly, security was put on high alert in Dera Ismail Khan, where police have started snap checking. SAMAA

China’s TGC to invest in Pakistan’s energy sector

BEIJING: China’s Three Gorges Corporation (TGC) has expressed agreement to make 10 billion dollar investment in energy sector in Pakistan.

Talking to media after holding meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari here, the chairman TGC Mr. Koing Jang said that a dam with capacity to generate 7000-megawatt electricity in Bonji place of Gilgit-Baltistan while another dam with capacity to generate 1200-megawatt electricity will be built in Gohala place.

Earlier, the President of a local bank also held meeting with President Zardai.

Oil prices rise in Asian trade

SINGAPORE: Oil prices edged up in tepid Asian trade Wednesday after recent falls caused by concerns about the US economic recovery, analysts said.

New York”s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in August, rose 10 cents to 72.08 dollars a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for August delivery gained 13 cents to 71.58 dollars.

Crude markets climbed in the wake of seven straight sessions of losses as wary traders bought up crude in a listless market, analysts said.
