“I will not only not steal, but I’ll have the corrupt arrested,” Aquino, 50, told a news conference in his first comments since Monday’s polls.

Massive corruption has long dogged the Philippines, tainting electoral politics and skimming billions of public funds in a country where a third of the population lives on $1 a day.

Still, the survey frontrunner and son of former president Cory Aquino leads the race followed by the former 13th President of the Philippines Joseph Ejercito Estrada.
The figures shown below comprises the 84.90% of the total election returns. Earlier this morning, the Comission on Election announced that this will be the last announcement of the partial and unofficial results of the elections. The congress, who has the power to proclaim the winners will be announcing the final figures if the 100% of the total election returns are already canvassed.

The 50-year-old Aquino has promised to immediately begin prosecuting corrupt officials to restore government credibility.

At many polling places, voters waited more than five hours in humid 100-degree heat to cast their ballots, with many eventually giving up in despair. Election officials put turnout at 75% of the 50 million eligible voters.

For the first time, optical scanning machines counted the votes in 76,000 precincts. A software glitch discovered a week ago nearly derailed the vote, but was fixed at the last minute. The machines were expected to reduce incidents of poll fraud allegations that have marred previous contests.

pirates

piratesTen pirates released from a Russian warship 300 miles out to sea may have drowned, according to Russian officials and colleagues of the pirates, raising fears of retaliation against other vessels plying East African waters.

The pirates were captured last week after they hijacked the Moscow University, a Liberian-flagged, Russian-operated oil tanker sailing off the Somali coast. A Russian warship came to the ship’s rescue and apprehended the pirates. But after determining it would be too difficult to obtain a conviction, Russian officials said that they dropped plans to take the pirates to Moscow for trial.

Instead, like many other warships that have intercepted pirate skiffs, the Russian marines released the pirates — but not before removing weapons and navigation equipment from the boat several hundred miles from shore. Russian officials gave no explanation for removing the navigation equipment

Russian officials claimed they considered bringing the pirates to Moscow for trial but decided not to because of the uncertainties of international law.

So the Russians say they placed the pirates in a boat without weapons and after taking away the pirates navigation equipment cut the small boat loose. While removing the weapons makes sense to many people, leaving the pirates at sea without navigation equipment strikes some as senseless. The Moscow University tanker was hijacked on May 5 by a gang of pirates, according to the European Naval Force Somalia, which patrols these waters and monitors hijacking attempts. It said the crew members locked themselves in the rudder compartment as the pirates boarded the ship.Officials initially said they would be taken to Russia for trial, but the Defense Ministry said Friday they’d been released because of “imperfections” in international law. The statement was met with skepticism, especially in light of a comment made by the Russian president.
“We’ll have to do what our forefathers did when they met the pirates” until the international community comes up with a legal way of prosecuting them, Dmitry Medvedev said on the day the ship was stormed.

White House: Vice President Joe Biden’s oldest son was hospitalized Tuesday, the White House said, but it did not say why.
Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, 41, was admitted to Christiana Hospital on Tuesday morning.
“He is alert and speaking with his family and his doctors,” said his spokesman, Jason Miller. Miller did not provide any details on the attorney general’s condition but said he had been in the office Monday for meetings.
Hospital spokesman Bill Schmitt referred questions to the vice president’s office. A state trooper was stationed at the main entrance of the hospital and several black SUVs and men in suits with earpieces were nearby.f4b979bbf7n 8002 biden
“Beau Biden is a great leader with a great family, and I’m glad they’re with him right now,” said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, who referred questions about Biden’s condition to his family.

“Beau Biden is a great leader with a great family, and I’m glad they’re with him right now,” said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, who referred questions about Biden’s condition to his family.

Biden, 41, had considered running for the Senate seat his father held before becoming vice president, but decided against it.

In 2009, the younger Biden returned from a yearlong deployment to Iraq with his Army National Guard unit. He was a captain and military lawyer in the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade.

The vice president traveled to Delaware on Monday afternoon for a previously scheduled trip. He did a round of morning show interviews from Wilmington Tuesday morning, and was supposed to return to Washington later in the day for his weekly lunch with President Barack Obama and a series of meetings on Afghanistan.

Beau Biden announced earlier this year that he would not run for the Senate seat previously held by his father. Ted Kaufman, Joe Biden’s former Senate chief of staff had accepted the appointment to Biden’s Senate seat as a temporary “place holder”, until Beau was able to run for the seat.
Biden’s biological mother was killed, along with his infant sister when a tractor-trailer broadsided their station wagon when they were out shopping for a Christmas tree. Beau was seriously injured in that accident, along with his brother Hunter.

223d474a8bxusone nexus oneNexus One gives the iPhone a run for its moneyThe Nexus One is an extremely slim and sleek touchscreen device that sports a trackball and the obligatory Android keys (back, menu, home, search). It uses a virtual keyboard so it’s much smaller than previous Android phones we have reviewed, such as the flagship G1. In fact, it makes the iPhone look quite bulky by comparison.
Two of the most talked about mobile phone on the market, are the Google Nexus One and the Apple iPhone. The mobile phone industry is getting really excited about the release of the Google phone. Here, we take a look at what the iPhone and the Nexus One have to offer users who might be interested.

The Google Nexus One, is available in the USA at the moment and should be available in Europe, later in 2010. This handset is called the Nexus One and it is seen as a as a possible iPhone killer for 2010.ddf6bcf8b4s one3 nexus one The Google Nexus One mobile phone handset is the first mobile to be released just by Google. There have been handsets labelled Google Phones before such as the G1 and G2. However, these were only actually using the Google developed android Operating System and were branded by T-Mobile or Vodafone and HTC.

The first Google mobile phone is being manufactured by HTC, because of this we will expect a highyt quailty build. Google have gone for a really sleek and stylish design, which fits neatly into the palm of your hand and slips in and out of your pocket without a struggle. 798dbf9696gadget nexus one68″ height=”311″ />The Google Nexus weighs just 130g, which is slighty lighter than both the Apple iPhone (136g) by 6g, so not really a massive deal.

One of the beautiful things about the Nexus One is its vibrant high-resolution 3.7-inch screen with an extremely bright backlight. The camera is decent, too. It’s a 5.0 mega-pixel camera with autofocus, capable of taking near-perfect shots during the day and not so bad shots at night using a better-than-average LED flash. Video can be recorded at 720 x 480 resolution, the same resolution as that of an ordinary TV and a very rare feature for mobile phone cameras right now. The usual array of features are all included: Bluetooth, WiFi, microSD slot, GPS, mini USB, accelerometer, compass, proximity sensors, and — a real deal-breaker for some — an ordinary-sized headphone socket that can link the Nexus One directly to your sound system or headphones like people have been doing with iPods for years

American Populace, Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen and the Backyard Sanctuary are asking for help to bail out of the financial crunch they are experiencing since quite some time.
They admit knowing that the economy all over is slouching, but that could hardly be a reason for euthanizing animals. Most of the times the work Daffy’s or the Sanctuary does go unnoticed but people should understand that by caring for these animals, they are actually saving tax payer money as they don’t hand out the animals to the local animal control for putting them out, which costs quite a sum of money in the long run.
nstead, Daffy’s and the Sanctuary keep these animals alive, at homes; but under the present state of the situation, the animals are probably only a meal away from being our pets to a simple statistic on a board.
They are feeling the crunch so deeply that they surrender with the fact they don’t have enough money left to rent a large truck to pick up bulk food for the shelters. There are the Pet co in the state and over 50 other stores and businesses that help Daffy’s to collect food for the animals but without any money to fund the supply and distribution, they will be left with no other choice but to close their shutters down.

2d222ccc69us 240 amazing raceAfter traveling 40,000 miles across 5 continents, Dan, 25, and Jordan Pious, 23, were the first of the final three teams to arrive at the finish line on the finale of The Amazing Race. The Barrington, R.I.-based brothers dished with PEOPLE about the brilliant moves that scored them the $1 million prize, the play they aren’t proud of and their quest to clear Caite’s name of Brandy and Carole’s accusations. –Carrie Bell
When you started in L.A., did you think you were going to win or were you surprised to the end?
Jordan: I’d watched 15 seasons and I think it’s safe to say that the younger and more physically fit your team is, the better chances you have to win. At 23 and 25 and with my brother being as athletic as he is, we thought we had a good chance going into it. But at the end of the day, even though it’s a little cliché, every single one of those teams had an equal shot of winning.
Getting moved to first class mid-flight in order to exit the plane first is one of the best strategies ever seen on the Race. As long as Amazing Race teams purchase a coach ticket, a network representative confirmed to us today, they are absolutely allowed to upgrade to first or business class. The Pious brothers’ pretty persuasion is not unprecedented, either: Plenty of other teams in previous seasons have talked their way into fancier seats at the front of the plane—something Race superfan Jordan probably knew.

The brothers also did their homework for the final leg’s memory challenge. Again, says CBS, they were playing by the book in using the notes they’d prepared beforehand to correctly order eleven posters of previously eliminated teams.

Britain extends volcano ash flight ban

LONDON: Britain extended a ban on most non-emergency flights in its airspace by six hours to 1800 GMT Friday due to ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland, air traffic authorities said.

The National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which manages British airspace, said “restrictions will remain in place in UK-controlled airspace until 1900 (UK time) today, Friday 16 April, at the earliest.”

NATS grounded flights over Britain at 1100 GMT Thursday. Flights between Northern Ireland and the west coast of Scotland as well transatlantic flights to those parts of Britain, might be allowed up to 1200 GMT Friday, said the air traffic control service.

“We continue to work closely with airports, airlines, and the rest of Europe to understand and mitigate the implications of the volcanic eruption,” added the air authority.

Scottish airports were the first to ground flights following Wednesday”s eruption of the volcano under Iceland”s Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

The volcanic ash has spread across northern Europe, cancelling thousands of flights and closing airspace in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.

Half of all flights between North America and Europe are expected to be cancelled on Friday due to the ash, according to Eurocontrol, the agency that coordinates flights in Europe. There are an average of 600 flights between Europe and North America a day, it added.

Ronne was an American  explorer of Antarctica  and the first woman in the world to be a working member of an Antarctic expedition. She is also the namesake of the Ronne Ice Shelf.

Edith Ronne Land was named after her by her husband, who mapped the last unknown coastline on earth. When the territory was determined to be mostly ice shelf, the name was changed to Edith Ronne Ice Shelf. At her request, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names removed her first name, so that the Ronne Ice Shelf  would correspond to the continent’s other large ice shelf, the Ross Ice Shelf and to commemorate all three Ronne explorers including her father-in-law, Martin Ronne, a member of Amundsen’s South Pole expedition. Edith and Finn Ronne were the first married couple to reach the South Pole and she was the first non-royal woman to have an Antarctic site named after her.

54329a1f0750x176 2010 torch passes 1976 Olympic stadium in MontrealThe past and future of Canada’s Olympic Games got together this morning in Montreal. The torch for the 2010 games was carried past the site of the 1976 Summer Olympics. Short-track speedskater Jean-Francois Monette carried the flame past the city’s Olympic Stadium, site of the 1976 Games and longtime home to baseball’s now-defunct Montreal Expos.

It was a surreal scene. The city’s first snowstorm of the season, combined with howling winds, made it seem like the stadium’s famous tower was shrouded in a tornado of white dust.

The 1976 Games were the first time Canada hosted the Olympics; Calgary was the second, in 1988, and Vancouver will be the third.
