Death toll from Kyrgyz unrest up to 49

BISHKEK: The death toll from ethnic violence that erupted in southern Kyrgyzstan has risen to 49, with 654 people injured in the unrest, the health ministry said Saturday.

“Forty nine people in total have been killed following the trouble,” between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in the country”s second city, Osh, said a ministry statement.

The previous ministry figures had given the number of dead as 45. The clashes broke out late Thursday and ran into Friday, prompted the government to declare a state of emergency and impose a curfew on the city and neighbouring districts between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am (1400 GMT and 0000 GMT). But there was more gunfire overnight Friday to Saturday, a senior member of the security forces told foreign news agency. “The situation is very complicated. Exchanges of fire are continuing, several buildings are in flames,” he said.

SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the authorities arrested veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in Srinagar and shifted him to Humhama police station on Saturday.

According to Kashmir media service, the move was made following the killing of an 11th class student, Tufail Ahmed Matoo, by Indian police. Tufail was killed while dozens other people were injured when the police resorted to brute force to break up peaceful demonstrators in Srinagar on Friday.

Talking to Geo News Umar Khan Alisherzai said that he will meet with the released Pakistanis today.

He said that the Pakistanis performed Ummrah on Saturday.

Prince Mohammed bin Nayef has decided to send them back home by a special plane and that the Pakistanis have been released on the basis of special relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arab, he added.

According to reports during last week seven patients of dengue fever have been died in Khanpur, Pind Gujran, Khoi Nara, Raniwah and other areas of Haripur, while dozens new patients have been admitted in hospitals.

PML-N MNA from the area Sardar Mohammed Mushtaque has urged the health department to sent the teams of doctors to the area to meet the situation.
